Do yourself a favor and wander into the quieter side alleys if you want a decent meal without the tourist tax. Now, the main event: the King of Aragon’s Staircase. It’s 187 steps carved directly into the cliff face at a steep 45-degree angle. Here is how the process actually goes: you have to buy a ticket to go down, they hand you a helmet for safety, and then you start the descent. Going down is fine, but remember—what goes down must climb back up. Climbing those steep, narrow steps back up in the heat is brutal. If you have knee issues or hate heights, skip it. You can get equally good views of the cliffs for free by just walking along the hiking paths at the top. Some practical tips if you plan to visit: 1. Wear real shoes. I saw people trying to climb the steps in flip-flops, which is just asking for an accident. The stones are slippery. 2. Buy your water at a supermarket before you head up to the old town. The shops near the cliffs charge ridiculous prices. 3. If you want the best views of the cliffs without the sweat, just take one of the boat tours from the marina. It’s much easier on the legs.
