Here are the tips. 1️⃣ Chongqing September in Chongqing finally cools down; you might even want a light jacket for the evening river breeze. For the Dazu Rock Carvings, I recommend going early in the morning. The light hitting the Reclining Buddha and Thousand-Hand Guayin at Baoding Mountain at an angle looks ten times better than at noon. ⏰ Arrive before 8:30 AM to beat the tour buses. Jinyun Mountain is great for an afternoon hike; catch the sunset at Lion Peak. The trail is shaded the whole way, so it's fine even for seniors to walk at a leisurely pace. ⚠️ Supplies are limited on the mountain, so bring enough water before you head up. For Wulong Karst, don't try to do too much—just pick either the Three Natural Bridges or the Longshuixia Gap; doing both will wear you out. 📍 Stay one night in Fairy Mountain Town so you don't have to catch an early bus the next day. The water level of the Yangtze Three Gorges is stable this season, making boat trips to see the clouds and mist on both banks much more comfortable than in the sweltering summer. 🚄 There are direct high-speed trains from Chongqing North Station to Wulong, taking about 2 hours. 2️⃣ Baoding | Hebei The Western Qing Tombs are my pick for the most underrated spot in Hebei. When the ginkgo trees turn yellow in October, the sacred path is covered in gold, and there are fewer tourists than in a single corner of the Forbidden City. 📍 Start from Tailing, and on the way, check out the Echo Wall at Changxiling—it's so quiet you can shout a couple of times yourself. ⚠️ The tombs are far apart, so driving is the most convenient option; if you don't have a car, take the scenic area shuttle. Baishishan's red leaves appear in late October, and the lines for the glass walkway are half as long as in peak season. If you're afraid of heights, don't force it; the trail by Shuangxiong Stone is just as photogenic. Yesanpo is perfect for a 2-day, 1-night trip; it's cool inside Bailixia, so remember to bring a jacket. You have to take a boat to get to the Bingling Temple Grottoes. Buy your boat and admission tickets online a day in advance; if you wait to buy them on-site, you might miss the boat. ⚠️ Photos are not allowed inside the grottoes. If you want to see the special caves, you need to book them separately. Spots are limited, so ask clearly when you arrive. 📍 From Linxia city, take the Zheda Highway and stop at the Yellow River viewing platform along the way—it's worth it. 🍜 Don't miss the hand-grabbed mutton and Hezhou buns in Linxia. It needs to be fun for them, but not so exhausting that it makes the adults question their life choices. These 8 cities accessible by high-speed rail are places I've tested with my kids and would visit again. They have mountains, seas, and ancient towns, and most importantly, they aren't too tiring. I've prepared the guide for you. 1️⃣ Xining | Qinghai Xining's altitude is just over 2,000 meters. The biggest fear with kids is altitude sickness, but as long as you don't run and jump too much on the first day, it's usually fine. 📍 At the yogurt stand outside Dongguan Mosque, it's 3 yuan a bowl, and it's so sour it makes the kids squint but still want more. The butter sculptures and murals at Kumbum Monastery might be too deep for kids to understand, but they'll be attracted by the colors. I suggest hiring a guide; they can make the stories interesting in 30 minutes. ⚠️ You can't take photos inside the halls, but taking pictures of the red walls and white pagodas at the entrance is enough for great photos. For lunch, have a bowl of *niangpi* (cold noodles) outside the monastery. The kids can have white porridge, and the adults can add chili—everyone gets what they want. In the afternoon, head back to the city and rent a boat at People's Park. It's 10 yuan for 30 minutes, which is great for burning off the kids' energy. ⏰ In summer, it's still bright at 8 PM, so don't force the kids to sleep according to inland time. 2️⃣ Weihai | Shandong Weihai is a city where "just walking around feels clean." If you take a speedboat with the kids, choose a semi-enclosed one so the wind doesn't blow directly on their heads. Bingling Temple Grottoes are on the other side of the Yellow River and require a boat ride, which takes about 1 hour. Young kids might get bored, so have snacks and cartoons ready. There aren't many stairs after getting off the boat, but the ground is gravel, which isn't stroller-friendly, so I suggest using a hip seat. 🍜 Back in the city, have a bowl of Heyan noodles. The noodles are small and soft, so the kids don't have to chew too hard. ⚠️ It's dark inside the grottoes, so prepare kids who are afraid of the dark beforehand—don't force them in. 4️⃣ Zhuzhou | Hunan Zhuzhou isn't a traditional tourist city, but a trip to the Yandi Mausoleum is worth it with kids. 📍 The Yandi Mausoleum scenic area has excellent greenery and plenty of shade, so it's not too hot to walk around in summer. Take the sightseeing bus to the main hall with the kids, then walk down slowly to save energy. The sacrificial square in front of the hall is very open, so the kids can run around, but don't let them touch the incense burner as it's hot. 🍜 The mugwort cakes at the entrance of the scenic area are 5 yuan for 3, soft and chewy without sticking to teeth, and the kids can eat 2 in a row. ⚠️ It's closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip.
