8 off-the-beaten-path spots for 3 days for 500 HKD: Personally tested, not crowded and fun!
Everyone says that popular cities are crowded like rush hour, while less popular cities are empty enough to do Tai Chi. I don't believe in evil, so I chose 8 places that I can reach by high-speed rail and don't have to spend much money. I spend $500 for three days. I can eat well and sleep well, and I don't have to look at the back of my head.
01 Beihai City | Guangxi
The way to open the North Sea is not to drop dumplings at Silver Beach, but to get up early and go to Chiu Tsai Street.
📍Yau Tsai Street is lively at six in the morning, the rolls are thin and translucent, pour a spoonful of sweet and sour sauce, with a cup of Vietnamese drip coffee for two dollars, sit on a plastic stool and drink slowly.
⏰ Closes before 9pm, people taking a nap directly miss.
Don't go to the main entrance of Silver Beach during the day. Walk three kilometers east to the Fengjiajiang Bridge, where locals are rushing to the sea. After low tide there are small crabs and mussels in the sand, and you can play all morning with a shovel. Return to the city in the afternoon, walk the old street of Zhongshan Road, the arcade is mottled but popular, the shrimp cake sold by the grandmother on the roadside is five dollars a piece, just baked very crispy.
⚠️ The round trip ferry ticket to Weizhou Island is over $300. If you are budgeting, don't go to the island. Two days in Beihai city is enough. For accommodation, choose a youth hostel near Lao Street. The bed is $50. At night, we go to Wai Sha Qiao Tau to eat seafood congee. There are so many ingredients that I suspect the owner is losing money.
02 Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture | Gansu
This place is covered in the glory of Bilan State, but the food and sight are no less. At 8am, before 8 Plaza 13 Alley has woken up, the Beef Noodle House at the entrance of Alley has turned over three rounds of tables. The noodles cost $7, plus a portion of tendon meat for $10. The soup is clear and spicy, but not dry. After eating, walking into the depths of the alley, the brick-carved gatehouse and wooden windowsills are more flavorful than the celebrity photo spots.
In the afternoon, go to Liujia Gorge Tourist Resort, 🚄 take a taxi from the city for half an hour, twenty dollars. The water on the side of the reservoir is that unreal blue-green, a spin on a speedboat, windy to keep your eyes open, but worth it.
⚠️ Remember to bring a jacket, the wind by the lake is hard, cooling fast in the evening.
The Bing Ling Temple World Cultural Heritage Tourist Area is far from the city. You need to reserve a full day for a charter bus. The grotto opens on the red sandstone by the Yellow River, and the Big Buddha is more shocking than imagined.
🚄 The last bus back to the city is at 5pm.
03 Changzhi City | Shanxi
The Taihang Mountains in Changzhi are much more beautiful than those in Henan. The core gameplay of Huguan Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon Baquan Gorge is to enter by boat and exit by cable car. The boat shuttled through the canyon, the stone walls on both sides seemed to have been split by a knife, and the water was so green that it turned black. After getting off the boat, walk a section of the canyon, ⏰ Arrived before 10 am, the light slanted into the canyon, the water is all broken gold.
The Baquan Gorge and the Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon are actually connected. If the time is tight, we will only hike the Baquan Gorge. The essence is in this section. The whole journey takes about four hours, with a free shuttle bus in between.
⚠️ Don't buy a raincoat at the entrance of the scenic spot. The weather on the mountain changes at any time, but a plastic raincoat that costs $10 down the mountain sells for $30 on the mountain.
Stay at a farmhouse in the canyon, $80 a night for a standard room, and have wild vegetables fried earthen eggs and corn paste for dinner. The next morning I pushed the window open, the mountain fog had not yet dissipated, and the air was sweet.
🚄 Changzhi East Station has a direct tourist line to the scenic spot, running every hour during peak season.
04 Shennongjia Forest District | Hubei
Shennongjia is not only the legend of wild people, Guanmen Mountain and Tiansheng Bridge are more suitable for ordinary people to play. The stream of Guanmen Mountain is bitingly cool. In summer, if you take off your shoes and step in, you will want to shrink back in three seconds. The waterfall at Tiansheng Bridge is not big, but the water vapor hits your face. Standing under the bridge is like a natural air conditioner.
⏰ Enter the scenic spot at 8 am, there are few people, you can see the golden monkey jumping in the tree.
⚠️ After 2pm the tour group enters, the canyon is all people, the experience plummets. Tickets cost over $100, and you'll get your money back by visiting two attractions.
Living in Muyu Town, the town's pork ribs hot pot is worth eating. The soup is cooked until it turns white, and the meat falls off the bones at a bite. If you have a tight budget, stay in a youth hostel. The bed in a six-person room is $60.
🚄 After the high-speed rail to Shennongjia Station, there is a shuttle bus directly to Muyu Town, an hour's journey, but the frequency is small, it is safer to arrive at the station before 4 pm.
05 Chengde City|Hebei
The summer resort has a great reputation, but most people just take a turn in the Lake District and leave. I suggest you go in the opposite direction: enter from the main entrance of Li and take the mountain bike directly to the mountains. The pavilion on the hill allows you to see the whole pattern of the hill mansion, with the palace area and the lake area laid out like a chessboard under your feet.
⏰ Enter the park after 4pm, tickets are half price, the light is also just right, more than half less people.
After leaving the mountain house, walk 10 minutes to Puning Temple. The big Buddha in the temple is more than 20 meters high. Looking up will give you goosebumps.
⚠️ Photography is prohibited in the temple. Do not take your mobile phone out. At night, go to Erxianju Night Market. Bowls and buckwheat dumplings have been eaten by locals since childhood. Don't go to the celebrity shops in line, the roadside stalls are full of flavor.
The next day to Jinshanling Great Wall, 🚄 there is a direct shuttle bus from Chengde North Bus Station, the journey takes an hour and a half. This section of the Great Wall is much wilder than Badaling, with dilapidated enemy towers and grass growing in the brick seams on the walls. After climbing up, sit inside the enemy tower and enjoy the wind. You are the only one who has the whole section of the Great Wall. The sense of emptiness is worth the price of admission.
06 Aksu Region |Xinjiang
The Mysterious Grand Canyon of Tianshan is not located in the city of Aksu, near Kuche.
🚄 About forty minutes by taxi from Kuqa train station, the entrance to the canyon looks like a crack in the earth. Walking inside, flanked by ochre-red rock formations, the sunlight shone on like a burning flame.
⏰ 12 noon to 2 pm is when the light is best, the rock walls are the brightest, but also the sunniest time.
The entire canyon is about three hours on foot, with some sections having to cross the river on gravel.
⚠️ Wear non-slip shoes, don't wear slippers, I saw people slipping into the water. There are no resupply points in the canyon, water and dry food are prepared in advance, available at the entrance of the scenic spot but twice as expensive.
Return to Kuqa county town at night for toasted buns on Hotstan Road. The skin is thin and the filling is big, the juices of the lamb and onion burst in the mouth, for three dollars a piece, I ate five. Accommodation Choose a bed and breakfast in the old town for a hundred dollars a night, and outside the window is the carved wooden window of an old Uyghur house.
07 Yongzhou City|Hunan
Yongzhou is not only Liu Zongyuan’s “Eight Records of Yongzhou”, the ancient village of Shanggantang is a surprise. The village is hidden in a valley, a river of Xiemu flows in front of the village, a stone arch bridge connects the bluestone plank road, and the Wenchang Pavilion at the head of the bridge is hundreds of years old. The people in the village are still indigenous. Grandma chooses vegetables at the door, dogs lie in the middle of the road sunbathing, and no one rushes you.
⏰ At five o'clock in the evening, the setting sun gilded the canopy of the ancestral hall, the tourists basically left, the whole village was quiet as if back in ancient times. There is a farmhouse at the entrance of the village. Blood duck is the signature. The duck blood is wrapped in pieces of meat and fried until it shines. It is so spicy that it goes well with rice. Stay for eighty dollars a night, wake up the next morning by a chicken, push open the window is buffalo bathing in the river.
⚠️ The stone road in the village is slippery, so don't wear high heels on rainy days.
🚄 After the high-speed rail to Yongzhou Station, take a taxi to the village for about an hour, chartered round trip two hundred dollars, suitable for four people to share money.
08 Lhasa City |Tibet
Lhasa is not popular, but Namtso is worth a special trip.
🚄 Charter a car from the city to Namtso, three hours one way, 150 dollars per person. After crossing the Naganla Pass, the lake suddenly spread out before our eyes, the kind of blue that cannot be captured in photos.
⏰ Arrived at the lake at 2 pm, the wind is light, the color of the lake is the brightest, you can see the stones at the bottom of the lake.
⚠️ Namtso is 4700 above sea level, don't run or jump, walk slowly. Bringing an oxygen bottle is not too necessary, but painkiller powder and glucose can be prepared. After returning to Lhasa, the Potala Palace Square is lit up at night, and the reflections look like a Miyazaki movie. The Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple require reservations, ⚠️ Make an appointment one day in advance on the public account, there is basically no chance to make an appointment on the day of peak season.
The bluestone slab at the entrance of the Jokhang Temple is polished by long-headed people, and the mulberry smoke from the turning road is mixed with the smell of butter. Sitting in the sweet teahouse on the edge of the square, a pot of sweet tea costs eight dollars, which can last the whole afternoon. The rhythm of Lhasa is slow, don't rush the schedule, three days is just right.
Of these 8 places, the ones I miss the most are Beef Noodles in Linxia and Gucun in Yongzhou. If you're in a hurry, it's better to choose a place to stay for three days than to just wander around. Talk in the comment section, who did you plant the grass for?
