July in Chongzuo is tough and I don’t recommend going. It’s like stepping out of a karst mountain pass into 27℃ rainforest mist wrapped around the ancient Taiping city, where the aroma of freshly roasted meat rolls and sand ginger steam seeps into the open linen shirt collar. I had two ice cooling patches stuck to the back of my neck for two hours, half melted. Just now at the Ming Shi Tian Yuan pier, my hands were full of freshly pounded wild yellow skin fruit soaked in ice rice wine, while the smoky, crispy river fish jerky along the Zuo River left a thin salty sticky residue on the back of my hands that hit me unexpectedly! July’s rainy season in the karst alleys of southern Guangxi’s Chongzuo is a unique experience. Holding the freshly bought roasted purple perilla honey corn, I hadn’t even finished walking half of the Taiping ancient city’s bluestone alley when the mountain mist blew over, soaking the side pocket of my washed canvas bag and the soft-soled creek shoes with crushed hibiscus petals from the Zuo River shallow beach. The wind carried cool droplets from the Zuo River that I had to pat off. The whole karst peak forest was bathed in shimmering green light, soaked in the honeyed jade glow of soft rain clouds. The scent of hand-rolled mugwort rice cakes floated from the Huashan rock painting peaks to the wooden tile roofs of the Zhuang village, mingling with the fruity sweetness of the ice rice wine, drifting right into my nose 🍶 Who understands this, family!
