What if the most interesting part of a monastery is written in its details? 🤔 At Kirti Monastery in Ngawa (Aba), Sichuan, the scale is the first thing that hits you. It's maaassive! Also known as Gerdeng Monastery, this is THE largest monastery in Aba County and a major hub for Tibetan Buddhist learning in this part of China. 📍 Kirti/Gerdeng Monastery, Aba (Ngawa), Sichuan, China But the real magic? It's all about those details: the painted beams, elaborate window frames, deep red walls, and golden floral ornaments that pop against the architecture. These vibes are sooo stunning! My camera was basically obsessed, switching between shots of epic courtyards and zooming in on patterns that most people totally miss. Kirti Monastery follows the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism (the 'Yellow Hat' sect - a name inspired by its distinctive yellow ceremonial hats), founded by Tsongkhapa and closely tied to the Dalai Lamas. One detail you MUST look for: the golden Dharma wheel between two chilled-out deer. 🦌✨ It’s a nod to Buddha’s first teaching at the Deer Park in Sarnath. This motif shows up again on the fabric above the main entrance—literally art with meaning! Knowing all these things totally changed how I look at the place. What seemed like just pretty decorations now feels like a secret language I’m starting to decode. 🙌 As an artist, the craftsmanship is next level. As a traveller, I love how falling for a place’s looks is only step one—you gotta dig deeper to really get it. My photos show the architecture, but remember: Kirti Monastery is also a living religious community. There's so much going on behind the scenes that everyday visitors might never notice. 🧘♂️ Opening hours: Usually sunrise–sunset (double-check locally) Address: Kirti/Gerdeng Monastery, Aba County, Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, China So, when you visit epic spots like this… what grabs you first? The massive buildings or the smallest detail? Drop your thoughts below! 👇 #chinatravel #sichuan #tibetanbuddhism #culturaltravel #sacredarchitecture

First time visiting Gannan, how should you plan your trip? 🤔 Some come for the morning mist of Zhagana, some for the blue waters of Jiuzhaigou, and others want to explore Gannan + northern Sichuan + desert all in one go… I get so many private messages asking about Gannan routes, so today I’m organizing three classic itineraries all at once. After reading this, no more confusion 👇 · 🌟 Itinerary 1: Entire Gannan Region + Desert Adventure (8 days) 🗺️ Route Overview: D1: From all over the country → Lanzhou, private transfer from airport, free activities D2: Lanzhou → Guanyegou Scenic Area → Hot springs / luxury wilderness hotel D3: Dangchang → Lazi Pass Scenic Area + Battle Memorial Hall → Zhagana Scenic Area D4: Zhagana Scenic Area → Sangke Grassland → Xiahe luxury wilderness camp D5: Xiahe → Labrang Monastery → Lanzhou D6: Lanzhou → Zhongwei Shapotou Scenic Area → Desert stargazing D7: Zhongwei → Tengger Desert Five Lakes crossing → Yinchuan D8: Free activities in Yinchuan → Airport transfer ✅ Route Highlights: This route is a magical combination of the “Gannan secret realm” and the “Ningxia desert.” The first half explores Guanyegou’s waters, Zhagana’s mountains, and Labrang Monastery’s faith in Gannan; the second half in Ningxia features sand sliding at Shapotou, crossing the pink lakes of Tengger Desert’s Five Lakes, and lying back in the desert to watch the Milky Way. Grasslands, lakes, and deserts all in one trip. ✅ Advantages: Great contrast in scenery — one morning you’re daydreaming on alpine meadows, two days later you’re riding camels in the desert; spanning Gansu and Ningxia provinces, experiencing two very different landscapes; spending a night stargazing in the desert or at Tengol, the star-watching experience is top-notch. ✅ Suitable for: Those with 8+ days off who want to greedily see grasslands + lakes + deserts + Tibetan culture all at once without backtracking. · 🌟 Itinerary 2: Gannan + Northern Sichuan · Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong 🗺️ Route Overview: D1: From all over the country → Lanzhou, private transfer from airport, free activities D2: Lanzhou → Labrang Monastery → Ganjia Secret Realm → Grassland camp D3: Xiahe → Sangke Grassland → Zhagana D4: Zhagana → Huahu (Flower Lake) → Ruoergai Grassland → Songpan / Chuanzhusi D5: Songpan Ancient Town → Huanglong Scenic Area → Jiuzhaigou entrance D6: Full day Jiuzhaigou tour D7: Jiuzhaigou → High-speed train back to Chengdu → Free activities in Chengdu D8: Airport transfer in Chengdu ✅ Route Highlights: A classic combo of Gannan + northern Sichuan with no backtracking. Starting from Labrang Monastery’s prayer wheels, passing through Sangke Grassland, Zhagana, the Flower Lake in Ruoergai wetlands, and finally Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong. Good road conditions throughout, gradual altitude increase to avoid altitude sickness. ✅ Suitable for: Those with 7-8 days off who want to experience Gannan’s Tibetan secret realms but don’t want to miss Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, aiming to “see both major highlights in one trip.” · 🌟 Itinerary 3: Enter from Northern Sichuan, Exit Lanzhou · Reverse Crossing (8 days) 🗺️ Route Overview: D1: From all over the country → Chengdu, private transfer from airport, free activities in Chengdu D2: High-speed train Chengdu East → Songpan → Muni Valley Scenic Area → Jiuzhaigou entrance D3: Full day Jiuzhaigou tour D4: Jiuzhaigou → Huanglong Scenic Area → Songpan Ancient Town D5: Songpan → Ruoergai Grassland → Flower Lake → Zhagana D6: Zhagana Scenic Area → Langmu Temple → Xiahe D7: Xiahe → Sangke Grassland → Labrang Monastery → Lanzhou D8: Airport transfer in Lanzhou ✅ Route Highlights: This route is a “mirror version” of itinerary 2 but with reversed entry and exit points — enter Chengdu, exit Lanzhou, no repeated roads. The biggest highlight is the high-speed train directly to Songpan, saving the long winding mountain road from Chengdu to Chuanzhusi. ✅ Suitable for: Those who want to start from Chengdu and end in Lanzhou without backtracking, and want to connect Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong, and Gannan smoothly. · — 💡 Quick Summary: · Itinerary 1: Entire Gannan + Ningxia desert, big contrast in scenery, for greedy travelers · Itinerary 2: Enter Lanzhou, exit Chengdu, classic Gannan + Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong combo, for those wanting to “see two major highlights in one trip” · Itinerary 3: Enter Chengdu, exit Lanzhou, reverse crossing with no backtracking, for those starting in Chengdu who want a smooth route · — 🎯 Honestly, For your first time in Gannan, I recommend itinerary 2 or 3 — Jiuzhaigou + Zhagana + Labrang Monastery, all the classics included. If you want something different, go for itinerary 1 — the desert + grassland combo is definitely worth it. 📮 Want to know which route suits you best? #backpacking2026 Alright fellow backpackers, gather round. I just spent five days inLangmusi— that tiny border town where Gansu meets Sichuan — and I'm convinced this place wasmadefor us budget wanderers planning #backpacking2026 . Here's the deal. I arrived with a 35L pack, no real plan, and maybe40inmypocket.TheguesthouseIfound?40 in my pocket. The guesthouse I found? 40inmypocket.TheguesthouseIfound?12 a night with a view of the golden rooftops. The momo lady on the main street? $3 for a plate that fed me twice. This is backpacking heaven — no flashy resorts, just raw, honest travel. The story that wrecked me: On day two, I hitched a ride on the back of a monk's motorcycle to the Sertar Monastery. Yes, a motorcycle. Yes, through mountain fog. Yes, he was singing. We couldn't understand each other in any language, but when we reached the summit and he handed me a thermos of yak butter tea, I genuinely teared up. Travel doesn't get more backpacker than that. I spent mornings wandering the Qingke Stone Valley, afternoons debating philosophy with Tibetan nomads over cheap beer, and evenings watching the whole town go quiet under a sky full of stars. Real talk — here's my question: What's one small, off-the-grid destination you'd fight to keep on your #backpacking2026 list? Drop it below. I'm building my next six months around YOUR suggestions. 👇 #backpacking2026 #langmusi #budgettravel

Okay so Gahai Lake. If you haven't heard of it, don't worry — almost nobody has. It's this quiet, unassuming freshwater lake tucked into the Gannan grasslands in Gansu, sitting at about 3,400 meters. No flashy hotels. No souvenir shops. No tour buses fighting for parking spots. Just you, the wind, and roughly a million birds. It's a major stopover for black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese — the kind of birds that make you feel like you've stumbled into a National Geographic episode nobody's watching. The lake itself isn't enormous but the surrounding wetlands stretch out flat and wide with wildflowers in summer (June to August is killer). The grass goes green, the sky goes stupid blue, and you just stand there thinking "why am I not living here permanently." There's a wooden boardwalk that loops around part of the lake — maybe 2-3 kilometers, super easy. But honestly the real magic is walking off the boardwalk into the open grassland. Entry is about 35 yuan. Drive from Hezuo is 40 minutes. Bring sunscreen — the UV at that altitude is no joke. Layer up because it can snow in July and you'll believe it. The road in is rough so an SUV or at least something with clearance helps. Now the story. I was sitting alone on the grass about fifty meters from the boardwalk, eating instant noodles because I packed nothing useful, when this massive black-necked crane landed maybe ten feet from me. Just landed. Stood there looking at me like I owed it money. I froze. It stared. I stared. Then it did this whole dramatic wing-stretch thing, turned around, and walked away like it owned the place. Which — fair — it did. I started laughing, then for some reason got genuinely emotional. The silence up there is so heavy it gets inside you. I sat there for an hour after that just watching the lake change colors. Practical bits: stay in Langmusi town nearby — it's a tiny mix of Tibetan and Hui culture, cheap guesthouses, great momos. Hydrate constantly or you'll get altitude headaches. No real restaurants near the lake so pack snacks. Here's my question: what's a place you visited that made you feel weirdly emotional for absolutely no logical reason? Like not sadness, not joy, just… something cracked open. Tell me. I need to know I'm not broken. #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

Dear friends! Just returned from Xiahe, and it feels like my soul has been purified✨ June in Gannan is truly beautiful. The Sangke Grassland is as green as a carpet, the prayer wheels at Labrang Monastery never stop turning, monks in red robes walk past you, and the air is filled with the aroma of butter tea... This is not Tibet, this is Xiahe in Gansu, a Tibetan paradise forgotten by the world! 🌟 Best Time to Visit: Several Reasons to Come to Xiahe in June June is definitely the golden season in Gannan! Temperatures range from 10-20℃, the most comfortable time of the year. The grasslands have just turned green, wildflowers bloom everywhere, and most importantly — it’s not yet the rainy season! July and August often bring rain to Gannan, making roads difficult and affecting photography. June is almost always sunny, with blue skies, white clouds, red walls, and golden roofs — a 100% photo success rate! Plus, there are few tourists, allowing you to quietly feel the power of faith. 📸 Must-Visit Cultural Attractions (A Lifetime Must-See) 1. Labrang Monastery One of the largest Tibetan Buddhist academies in the world, home to the longest prayer wheel path! The 3.5 km prayer wheel path has over 2,000 prayer wheels. Follow the devout Tibetan locals as they spin the wheels, listening to their sound, and you’ll feel completely calm. Be sure to visit the Sun Buddha Platform to overlook the entire Labrang Monastery; the golden roofs sparkle in the sunlight — truly breathtaking! It’s best to come in the morning to see the monks debating. 2. Sangke Grassland The Sangke Grassland in June is stunning! Endless green grasslands dotted with herds of cattle and sheep, black tents scattered like stars, and snow-capped mountains visible in the distance. You can ride horses across the grassland or sit on the grass and daydream, watching the clouds roll by. We recommend visiting Sangke Wetland Park, where wooden boardwalks lead deep into the grassland — perfect for beautiful photos. 3. Guomang Wetland The most beautiful wetland in Gannan, bar none! In June, it’s a sea of flowers, with yellow blossoms covering the entire wetland. Black yaks graze leisurely on the grass, and a winding river runs through like a silver ribbon. From the viewing platform, you can take in the entire wetland — the vastness is indescribable. 4. Bajiao City An ancient city over 2,000 years old, with uniquely octagonal city walls. Indigenous people still live inside, leading a primitive lifestyle. Climb the city walls to overlook the entire ancient city and see the complete octagonal shape — very impressive. Outside the city are grasslands blooming with wildflowers in June. The combination of the ancient city and grasslands is truly magical. 📸 Photography Tips (How to Capture Cultural Masterpieces) Outfit suggestions: Solid colors! Solid colors! Solid colors! Important enough to say three times! White, beige, or khaki long dresses or wide-leg pants contrast beautifully with the red walls and golden roofs, creating a high-end feel. Avoid flashy clothes that disrupt the purity of the scene. Bring a red shawl for warmth and as a prop. Best shooting times: 7-9 AM and 6-8 PM, when the light is soft and the golden roofs of Labrang Monastery glow. Cultural photo spots: 1. Labrang Monastery prayer wheel path, capturing elderly locals spinning wheels 2. Sun Buddha Platform overlooking the full view of Labrang Monastery 3. On the road through Sangke Grassland, shooting wide road shots 4. On the city walls of Bajiao City, capturing panoramic views of the ancient city 🍜 Food Recommendations (Top Tibetan Cuisine) 1. Tibetan Baozi (steamed buns) Xiahe’s Tibetan baozi are incredibly delicious! Thin skin, generous filling of yak meat, bursting with juice in every bite. We recommend "Zhuoma Tibetan Restaurant," where the baozi are freshly made and steamed on the spot. 2. Hand-Pulled Yak Meat Gannan’s yak meat is amazing! Boiled in clear water and dipped in salt, it’s fragrant, tender, and chewy. Be sure to try the bone-in pieces — especially flavorful to gnaw on. 3. Tsampa Porridge A must-have breakfast! Made with tsampa, butter, and milk tea, this warm porridge is very soothing and nourishing. 4. Jue Ma Rice A Gannan specialty! Rice steamed together with Jue Ma (a local plant), sweet and fragrant, especially delicious with butter. 💡 Practical Tips (Cultural Travel Pitfall Guide) 1. Transportation: Xiahe has an airport but limited flights. It’s recommended to take a bus from Lanzhou, about 4 hours with good road conditions. The county is small; taxis start at 5 yuan. 2. Clothing: June has large temperature differences between day and night. Wear long sleeves during the day and a thick jacket at night! UV rays are strong, so be sure to use sun protection. 3. Pitfall 1: When entering monasteries, remove hats, avoid shorts and skirts, don’t speak loudly, and don’t take frontal photos of monks. 4. Pitfall 2: Always spin prayer wheels clockwise, never counterclockwise — it’s a sign of respect for the faith. 5. Pitfall 3: Don’t buy Dzi beads or amber at scenic area entrances — they’re fake. For souvenirs, go to official stores in the county. --- Accommodation 🏨 Xiahe Nuordan Camp National Geographic certified one of the world’s top ten wild campsites, open only from May to October, located deep in Sangke Grassland, offering an ultimate wild luxury experience. 🏨 Xiahe Cloud Wild Luxury Camp Located in the heart of Sangke Grassland, featuring triangular wooden cabins, oxygen supply facilities, and bonfire parties. The grassland sunsets are breathtaking. 🏨 Xiahe Nuoji Folk Manor Standalone wooden cabins, black tent coffee, bonfire gatherings with folk songs, a high-end private customized experience. 🏨 Xiahe Ganga Ecological Camping Site Located within the Ganga secret scenic area, near the ancient ruins of Bajiao City, rated 4.9 with top-quality facilities and excellent service.

You ever heard of Zecha Stone Forest? No? Neither had I until a friend dragged me to Luqu County in Gannan. And honestly, this place is the most underrated spot in Gansu — maybe in all of northwest China. It's like someone took a bunch of rock pillars, shoved them into a forest, and said "good luck finding your way out." The formations are wild — tall, jagged limestone spires jutting up through dense evergreen forest. Think Zhangjiajie but without the crowds and with actual oxygen. There are caves carved into the rocks where you can squeeze through, narrow gorges that feel like they're closing in on you, and paths that wind through streams and prayer flags fluttering in the wind. The whole area sits around 2,900 meters so bring layers — it's cold, damp, and the mist rolls in fast. The main trail loops about 3-4 hours through the core formations, then you can extend toward the Lama Temple ruins nearby — ancient stone walls in the middle of nowhere, moss-covered and eerie in the best way. Entry's around 40 yuan. Get there early — by 9 AM or you'll have the mist and the silence all to yourself. June to September is ideal. The surrounding grasslands are ridiculous — bright green, dotted with yaks, and you feel like you're standing on the edge of the world. Here's what happened. I was deep in the gorge section, completely off the marked trail because I wanted a "better angle" (I didn't), when I heard someone humming. I followed it and found this monk — maybe sixty, wearing maroon robes — sitting on a rock by a tiny waterfall, smoking a cigarette and just… vibing. He looked at me like I was the weird one. I sat down. We didn't speak the same language really, but he offered me the cigarette. I declined. He laughed. Then he pulled out a thermos of yak butter tea and poured me a cup. We sat there for twenty minutes listening to water. Best moment of my trip. Practical stuff: drive from Hezuo takes 45 minutes. Stay in Luqu town — tiny, cheap, and the lamb noodle soup is unreal. Wear waterproof shoes — the paths get muddy. Cell signal is basically zero inside the forest. Question: have you ever had a moment with a total stranger where zero words were needed and it just… hit? What was it? I want stories that make me feel things again. Go. #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

Complex roads, avoid fatigue driving: many mountain roads, sharp turns, high altitude; novice drivers should be cautious. Recommend rotating drivers and avoid night driving if possible. 2. Monitor weather and roads: Gannan weather is changeable; mountain areas often have temporary road repairs, rockfalls, or snow closures. Check latest road conditions before departure; bring bottled water and dry food for emergencies. 3. Fuel and supplies: Many gas stations in county towns along the way, but remote areas like Zhagana and Lianbaoyeze have no gas stations inside; always fill the tank fully. 🧘 Respect and etiquette (when in Rome) 1. Temple rules: No photography or loud noise inside main halls. Prayer wheels must be turned clockwise, a fundamental respect in Tibetan belief. 2. Ask before photographing people: Especially monks, local Tibetans, and village residents; politely ask first to avoid disputes. 3. Do not touch children’s heads: In Tibetan areas, touching children’s heads casually is considered impolite. 🎒 Pre-trip gear (for the plateau) 1. Layered clothing: Large temperature difference day and night (10-15℃); never bring only one piece of clothing. Recommend "onion-style" dressing: short sleeve/long sleeve + fleece/sweatshirt + thick jacket/windbreaker; remove or add layers as needed. 2. Sun protection and moisturizing: Strong UV rays and dry climate. High SPF sunscreen, lip balm, moisturizer are must-haves; sunglasses are essential (to prevent snow blindness). 3. Comfortable shoes: Many hikes, plank roads, and rocky paths on the route; a pair of non-slip, durable sports shoes or hiking boots is necessary. 🏥 Health and medicine (prevention) 1. Altitude sickness prevention: Large altitude range, some areas above 3000 meters. Start taking Rhodiola a week in advance (psychological effect helps too). Avoid strenuous exercise, overeating, and bathing immediately upon arrival (to prevent colds triggering altitude sickness). Absolutely no alcohol. Carry disposable oxygen bottles. 2. Essential medicines: cold medicine, stomach medicine, glucose solution, band-aids. Those with serious heart or lung conditions should be cautious about high-altitude areas. 💰 Expenses and communication (practical tips) 1. Carry some cash: Most places accept WeChat/Alipay, but remote towns or Tibetan vendors may only accept cash; keep a few hundred yuan in small bills just in case. 2. Signal instability: Zhagana, Lianbaoyeze, and other deep scenic spots have poor signal and slow internet; download offline maps before departure. 3. Accommodation booking: Prices double and availability tight during peak season (July-August); book accommodations in core cities (Xiahe, Linxia, Langmu Temple, Aba) 15-30 days in advance. 📸 Photography tips (for great shots) 1. Golden hours: Half an hour after sunrise and half an hour before sunset are the best times for photography; wait for these times to capture Zhagana’s morning mist and Lianbaoyeze’s reflections. 2. Composition ideas: For temples, include red walls + golden roofs + blue sky; for grasslands, find lines with cattle/sheep + roads + distant mountains. 3. Respect privacy: Always politely ask permission before photographing cultural subjects (monks, Tibetans close-ups); this is the bottom line. Wishing you a safe journey in Gannan and the chance to encounter the most beautiful Tibetan landscapes! 🎒

Gannan, stamped by National Geographic, is truly that gentle hidden gem in Northwest China’s Tibetan region 🌿 You don’t have to travel all the way to Tibet to feel that uniquely pure Tibetan atmosphere; nor do you need to spend a fortune. From grasslands, canyons, sacred lakes, to ancient temples, the scenery is all here without missing a beat. The best part is that altitude sickness is less likely throughout the trip. Traveling during the May Day holiday, you can fully relax, enjoy fewer crowds and beautiful views, and only by seeing it with your own eyes can you understand the true impact. · ⚠️ A sincere suggestion for first-time visitors to Gannan: don’t self-drive or blindly carpool. The distances between attractions are large, mountain roads are winding, and driving yourself is tiring and easy to get lost. It’s much better to join a reliable small group tour, relax and enjoy the highlights — it’s so much more worry-free ✅ · 🗓️ The 6 days and 5 nights itinerary I took basically avoids detours and pitfalls: DAY 1: Gather in Lanzhou | Explore the night market on your own in the evening, must try authentic beef noodles DAY 2: Lanzhou → Liujiaxia Reservoir → Meiren Grassland → Prayer Flag Corridor → Milarepa Buddha Pavilion → Stay in Hezuo DAY 3: Hezuo → Rock Road → Guanggai Mountain → Zhagana | Leisurely hike at Fairy Beach, overnight in a Tibetan village DAY 4: Morning mist in Zhagana → Ruoergai Flower Lake → Ruoergai Grassland → Sunset at the First Bend of the Yellow River → Tangke DAY 5: Tangke → Langmu Temple → Namo Grand Canyon hike → Luqu DAY 6: Luqu → Sankecao Grassland → Labrang Monastery → Return to Lanzhou and disperse · 🌟 These places are truly worth revisiting: ✅ Zhagana: A paradise hidden in the morning mist, where stone forests and grasslands blend perfectly — every photo looks stunning ✅ Labrang Monastery: Features an especially long prayer corridor; just walking through it lets you feel the serene Tibetan spirit ✅ First Bend of the Yellow River: Especially gentle at sunset, the Yellow River makes a slow, graceful turn here ✅ Ruoergai Flower Lake: Like a green gem, the wetlands and lake water are incredibly soothing ✅ Rock Road: The scenery is breathtaking, crossing grasslands and canyons all the way, never boring · 🚐 Some honest words about the small group tour (pure fun, no tricks): Only 5 people in the group, traveling in a 7-seat business van that’s stable even on mountain roads. No rushing, no shopping stops, staying in high-end hotels and unique homestays, with airport transfers included. The tour leader guides you throughout, so no need to plan anything yourself. · 💡 If you go during May Day, remember these: 1. The high-altitude UV rays are no joke — bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and a thick jacket; big temperature differences between morning and night 2. The local food tends to be spicy; if you have a sensitive stomach, bring some medicine, and don’t forget motion sickness pills 3. Don’t wear short skirts or shorts in temples, and don’t casually photograph monks — respect local customs 4. Signal is weak in remote areas, so carrying some cash is safer 5. The weather on the plateau changes quickly — carry an umbrella for both sun protection and rain · This May Day, I truly feel there’s no need to go to those overcrowded popular spots anymore. Take a trip to Gannan — no rushing, no worries, it’s really worth it.
