We wanted to introduce her to my home region, so we planned a wonderful day exploring together. We started in the golden stone village of Oingt, just beautiful. It’s so well-preserved and quiet, nestled among endless vineyards. The evening before, we simply enjoyed downtown Lyon. We found a great spot by the Saône riverbanks for a craft beer, watching the boats glide by. It was super relaxed and authentic. To end our time together, we had a really romantic walk through the modern Confluence district, right where the Rhône and Saône meet. We even saw some beautiful swans in the soft light! It was the perfect way to share this special place with my girlfriend! Local recommandation: 🌟 Visit Oingt, one of the most beautiful villages in Beaujolais. The views are incredible, especially around sunset. 🍺 Grab a drink along the Saône river quays. The atmosphere is vibrant and perfect for a casual break. 🚶 Highly recommend exploring Confluence. Explore around Saint-Jean, Saint-Paul and Saint-Georges rather than remaining on one main street. Go early in the morning if you want to appreciate the architecture without large groups. Then return in the evening for dinner. 🚪 Find the Secret Traboules This is one of Lyon’s most distinctive features. Traboules are passageways running through buildings and courtyards, historically allowing people to move between streets more directly. They’re particularly associated with Vieux Lyon and Croix-Rousse. Some are open to visitors, while others belong to private residential buildings. If a passage is accessible, enter quietly. Don’t shout inside courtyards, block doors or treat someone’s home like a theme park. Finding them feels like discovering a hidden version of Lyon. ⛪ Take the Funicular to Fourvière You can walk uphill. You can clearly see the dense city spreading between and beyond the Rhône and Saône. Late afternoon is particularly beautiful. Instead of immediately taking the funicular back down, consider walking downhill through the gardens towards Vieux Lyon. The descent is much easier than the climb and gives you several different perspectives. 🏛️ Discover Roman Lyon Fourvière has another surprise. Just a short distance from the basilica are the remains of Roman Lugdunum, including ancient theatres. Lyon was an important city in Roman Gaul, and the archaeological remains provide a completely different historical layer from Renaissance Vieux Lyon. Visit the nearby museum if you’re interested in Roman history. The combination of Roman ruins, Christian monuments and modern city views makes Fourvière worth several hours rather than a quick viewpoint stop. 🧵 Explore Croix-Rousse Croix-Rousse feels noticeably different from central Lyon. The district became closely associated with the city’s historic silk-weaving industry and the canuts, Lyon’s silk workers. Explore its slopes, staircases and traboules. You’ll find street art, independent businesses, cafés and excellent views appearing unexpectedly between buildings. Wear comfortable shoes. There are a lot of hills and stairs. 🌊 Walk Along Both Rivers Lyon is shaped by two rivers: the Rhône and Saône. Don’t explore the city entirely underground by metro. Walk beside the Saône around Vieux Lyon and cross its bridges for beautiful views back towards Fourvière. The Rhône riverbanks offer a different, more contemporary atmosphere, with paths and places to relax. Around sunset, buy something to drink or eat and simply sit beside the river. 🏙️ Explore Presqu’île Between the two rivers lies Presqu’île, Lyon’s central peninsula. This is where you’ll find major squares, shopping streets, restaurants and impressive architecture. Walk through Place Bellecour, continue towards Place des Jacobins and eventually reach the area around Hôtel de Ville and Place des Terreaux. It’s an easy area to explore on foot and provides a good contrast with medieval and Renaissance Vieux Lyon. 🍽️ Eat at a Real Bouchon Lyonnais This is essential. A bouchon is a traditional Lyon restaurant serving hearty local cuisine in an informal setting. Menus can include dishes that may seem unusual to international visitors, so don’t expect generic French bistro food. Light has a way of redesigning a city faster than any architect; I absolutely love these "light exercises." Sometimes they are accidental and free, yet completely brilliant. Today isn't about looking back. I’ve put together a list of places you can still make it to in 2026. Here are my top 8. 1. PROSVET, Perm August 28 to 30. FREE: All main installations and mapping. PAID: Only the multimedia party on August 29. PRO TIP: If you’re just there for the light, you don’t need a ticket at all. Start at the Shpagin Factory at 7:00 PM and finish at the Opera and Ballet Theater after 8:30 PM. 2. Festival of Lights, Berlin October 9 to 18. FREE: The entire main program. PRO TIP: Skip the €23 boat tour. The organizers honestly warn that the illuminated buildings aren't visible from the water. You're better off walking from the TV Tower to the Brandenburg Gate. 3. GLOW, Eindhoven November 7 to 14. FREE: The festival and digital map. PAID: The paper map costs €2. PRO TIP: Arrive via Eindhoven Centraal. The city center is closed to traffic in the evening, so bringing a car will only lead to the wrong kind of "adventure." 4. Amsterdam Light Festival November 26, 2026, to January 17, 2027. BERNACHON 🍫 I visited the world-renowned chocolatier! The shop is divided into two parts: one half is a café, and the other half is a chocolate shop. First, I ordered the finest chocolate cake, Gâteau du Président, and coffee at the café! The taste was refined and not overly sweet—it was the best chocolate cake I've ever had! As a bonus, I even received some chocolate 🥹 At the adjacent shop, I purchased their famous chocolates, Palet d'Or, chocolate bars, and macarons!
