Kansai's Largest Ski Resort: One-Day Trip to Mount Oike Ski Resort
🌅 Early Morning Departure | A Romantic Transition from City to Snow Country
Depart from Osaka by chartered car early in the morning. The car leaves the city and heads north along the Meishin Expressway, passing the Biwa Lake Bridge. The winter morning light glistens on the lake surface, sparkling like scattered silver. Entering the mountain roads, snow walls on both sides grow taller, and the air becomes crisp and clear. Turning the last bend, the panoramic view of Mount Oike Ski Resort suddenly unfolds—11 ski trails cascade down the mountain like white ribbons, colorful gondolas move slowly like pearls, and the entire ski area awakens in the morning light.

🎿 First Experience on the Slopes | The Awe of Kansai’s Largest Ski Resort
Arrive at the ski equipment rental center. The area is well-organized, with sections for children to adults, beginners to professionals, and neatly arranged gear. Staff patiently help us adjust ski boots and measure ski lengths.
Fully equipped, we stand at the entrance of the ski area. An automatic pedestrian tunnel gently takes us to the top of the slope—such a thoughtful design! It saves beginners from the dreaded uphill climb. Transparent glass lines the tunnel sides, allowing views of skiers’ agile movements outside.
Finally stepping onto the real slopes, Mount Oike’s snow quality lives up to its reputation—not icy hard but fluffy “powder snow,” making falls painless. As Kansai’s largest ski resort, the beginner trails are impressively wide, enough for 20 to 30 people to ski side by side without crowding. I cautiously try the basic moves and find them easier to master than expected.

🌄 Summit Wonders | Biwa Lake Spreads Out Below
Take the gondola up. As the altitude rises, the view broadens. At the 1,180-meter-high summit observation deck, right ahead, Biwa Lake looks like a huge sapphire set in the earth, with islands scattered like ink dots and towns faintly visible on the opposite shore.
Turning north, the Northern Japan Alps stretch under the clear sky, their snow-capped peaks shining with a sacred glow in the sunlight.
Looking down, the entire ski resort is in view, with skiers appearing as colorful dots drawing flowing lines on the white canvas.
The summit features a panoramic café, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee paired with a breathtaking view.

👨👩👧👦 Family Paradise | A Snow Country Heaven for Kids
After lunch, stroll to the family snow area. It’s a completely different world here:
The children’s magic carpet moves slowly, with kids holding small skis lining up, their excited faces flushed red.
On the sledding slope, children scream with joy as they slide down, parents waiting with open arms at the bottom.
In the snow tubing area, families sit in large tubes spinning down the hill, laughter filling the snowy air.
Especially worth mentioning is the Kids HOUSE indoor playground—warm as spring inside, equipped with a nursing room, toddler play area, and dedicated childcare service. Seeing a mother confidently leave her child here to ski for two hours is truly touching, a thoughtful design that brings peace of mind.
·
🎿 Afternoon Progress | Feeling Like Flying in Powder Snow
With brief guidance from the instructor, I start trying the intermediate trail “Stardust Road.” This trail is famous for its high-quality powder snow, and the skis make a pleasant “shh-shh” sound, like floating on clouds.
Unforgettable moments:
· Leaning naturally on the S-shaped turns, skis carving smooth arcs
· Powder snow occasionally splashing on my face, cool and refreshing
· Reaching a gentle slope facing Biwa Lake, skiing while enjoying the unique scenery
Back in the beginner area, I see many silver-haired skiers happily enjoying themselves. I learn the resort offers courses for all ages, with the oldest student being 78 years old. Skiing is truly a lifelong sport.
·
At sunset, I ski down the last slope bathed in the evening glow, ending a fulfilling day.
Mount Oike’s charm lies not only in its snow quality and scale but also in its thoughtful care for skiers—from female-friendly facilities to full-area Wi-Fi, diverse dining options to family-friendly designs, every detail makes the snowy moments warmer and more wonderful.
