Check the schedules before booking because transport between Malé and the islands isn’t always frequent. 🍛 Food: Eating at local restaurants instead of resort restaurants makes a huge difference to your daily budget. 💰 The biggest tip: Don’t just compare accommodation prices. It has everything I was looking for: a beautiful long stretch of white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, a relaxed local atmosphere and some incredible marine life just offshore. Dhigurah is particularly famous for whale shark encounters, and this was one of the biggest reasons I wanted to visit. 🐋 You can join local boat trips to look for them in their natural habitat, as well as go snorkelling and diving around the South Ari Atoll. But the island itself is just as special. Unlike the tiny resort islands, Dhigurah is surprisingly long, so there are plenty of quiet spots to enjoy the beach without feeling surrounded by people. The hotel sends a transfer for you—a speedboat! We stayed at a hotel on the local island of Daffushi; it's small and you can find privacy and company. I really enjoyed it. But there was no entertainment; all excursions were in the ocean. Fishing, snorkeling, diving (with a permit only), SUPs, surfing, and trips to neighboring islands. This is a Muslim country, so it's worth packing a longer wardrobe. And remember that alcohol is prohibited on the local islands, and you can't bring it into the country. But honestly, when you're surrounded by such paradise: white sand, coral, ocean, water that glows beneath your feet—alcohol seems completely unnecessary. Two of Thailand's prettiest spots — but they are very different. Krabi: dramatic limestone cliffs, Railay Beach and longboat rides. We had Railay almost to ourselves and loved the caves and jungle paths. Koh Lipe: tiny, turquoise and made for snorkelling — they call it the Maldives of Thailand, and it earns it. Since the Maldives is a Muslim country, certain rules apply: alcohol is prohibited, and swimwear is only allowed on specific "bikini beaches." You’ll also need to find your own meals at local cafes. However, if you're after stunning beaches and vibrant coral reefs, this is a great option! 2️⃣ Fly with layovers. The Maldives is a remote destination, and direct flights can be pricey. You can save a lot by booking flights with connections in other countries. 3️⃣ Travel during the summer! From May to September, hotels offer deep discounts and special deals. While summer used to be considered the rainy season, weather patterns have shifted over the last five years, and you’ll often find beautiful sunny days. Plus, rain can happen anytime regardless of the season. 4️⃣ Stay near Male. If you opt for a resort, pick one close to the capital. This allows you to take a speedboat instead of a seaplane or a domestic flight, which are much more expensive and can significantly drive up your costs. 5️⃣ Pick the right meal plan. Never book "breakfast only." Resorts don't have outside cafes, so you’ll be forced to pay high hotel prices for every other meal. At the very least, go for "half-board" (breakfast and dinner). There is something special about staying on a private island in the Maldives. Once you arrive, the pace of life changes. There is nowhere to rush to, no traffic to sit in and no list of sights that you desperately need to tick off. Instead, your days revolve around the sea. For once, doing absolutely nothing feels like an activity. The marine life is another major reason to come. Depending on the island and season, you can snorkel directly from the resort or join boat trips to reefs where you might encounter colourful fish, turtles, rays and, in some locations, sharks. But Here’s the Catch 🫢 The Maldives isn’t necessarily the destination for travellers who want to explore constantly. A resort island can be tiny. After a couple of days, you may realise that you have walked around the entire island. And getting there can be part of the cost. I’ve always thought the Maldives looked almost too perfect in photos, so I wanted to see whether it actually felt that way. I went during the dry season, and for me, December to April is the safest bet if your priority is sunshine, clear water, and spending most of the day outdoors. I started around Malé, which was a fun contrast to the quiet islands. After that, I stayed on a resort island where most days revolved around the beach, snorkeling, and doing absolutely nothing which turned out to be exactly what I needed. The water around Maafushi was beautiful, and I also enjoyed snorkeling near Baa Atoll, especially when the visibility was good. One afternoon, I took a boat trip around Hulhumalé and finished the day watching the sunset from the water. I’d be a little more cautious with May to October. The islands can still be beautiful, but rain and rougher seas can affect boat trips and water activities. For me, February and March would be ideal: sunny days, calm seas, and perfect conditions for snorkeling, diving, or simply lying on the beach with nowhere else to be. #maldives
