We were a group of five friends who embarked on a motorbike tour from Srinagar to Manali from September 1 to 11, 2026. The whole experience was nothing short of exceptional. Our accommodations ranged from a houseboat to a wooden hut and a tent, all of which were unique and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were included throughout, and the meals were consistently delicious. We rode Royal Enfield Himalayan 450s, which were relatively new with fewer than 50,000 kilometers on them and equipped with good tires. The bikes were the perfect height even for a short rider like me, and they performed flawlessly throughout the journey. Both our marshall and backup driver were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and patient, especially with me. They helped lift my bike whenever I struggled due to my height, pulled it out of tricky spots, and even handled my clumsy winter gloves. I joked about being an "old lady," and our marshall humorously replied, "but you’re young on the bike." Sakshi, who facilitated our tour, was always on hand to assist, even late at night. She resolved any issues smoothly and was consistently friendly and professional, making adjustments whenever necessary. The route itself was breathtaking. Every turn revealed stunning landscapes – towering, stark mountains with pristine ice caps and terrains that transitioned from desert to wetlands to lush tropical forests. If I had been solo, I’d have stopped a thousand times a day just to take photos. I can’t stop raving about this tour to everyone I meet. After my first trip to India earlier this year, I once again chose Forts & Palaces to organize this journey. This time, I traveled solo as a woman, exploring Northern India all the way to Ladakh. Once again, the trip was planned in a very personal and flexible manner right from the beginning. Bahadur accompanied me throughout the trip, making many special moments possible. His extensive experience, calm and warm nature, and above all, his flexibility made this journey very unique for me. I never felt like I was merely following a predetermined itinerary. If I wanted to see something spontaneously, it was always possible. Plans could also be easily adjusted whenever something interesting came up along the way. My route took me from Delhi to Haridwar, Rishikesh, Chandigarh, and Amritsar, continuing to Dharamsala and Manali, and eventually traversing the awe-inspiring Manali-Leh road to Leh, the Nubra Valley, and Alchi. Some of my best experiences arose from this flexibility. In Chandigarh, we spontaneously visited the Le Corbusier Centre and ended up joining a tour of the government district that led us into the Parliament building. Often, we found ourselves off the beaten path, exploring small alleyways and immersing ourselves in the local life, meeting incredible people. A conversation with young individuals in a remote mountain village remains particularly memorable to me. Of course, there were major highlights as well: the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the border ceremony, the breathtaking drive from Manali to Leh, the high mountain passes, Leh itself, the Nubra Valley with its sand dunes and camels, and the ancient monasteries of Hemis, Thiksey, and Alchi. Traveling alone through India with a private guide and driver offered me a remarkable blend of freedom and safety. I could decide what I wanted to do, while always feeling well taken care of. Our driver was exceptional—calm, dependable, and extremely skilled, especially on the challenging roads and mountain passes. I always felt completely secure. The background organization worked flawlessly. Bahadur’s son quickly and efficiently managed any changes or spontaneous arrangements. This balance of solid planning alongside the freedom to adapt during the journey was what made this trip so extraordinary for me. My most important tip for other women: Be brave and dare to discover India beyond the well-known paths. Venture into the side streets, be curious, and connect with the locals. Often, the best interactions and experiences are found where you least expect them. My heartfelt thanks go out to the entire team, Bahadur, and our driver for this exceptional, personal, and unforgettable trip.

#bucketlistdestinations I still cannot get over the surreal feeling of standing high in the Himalayas, exploring the breathtaking and criminally underrated Spiti Valley. Tucked away near the border of Tibet, Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert surrounded by jagged, snow-dusted mountains and ancient whitewashed Tibetan Buddhist monasteries clinging dramatically to sheer rock cliffs. The moment I crossed the high mountain passes and entered this remote region, I felt as if I had stepped into a timeless, untouched realm. Driving past herds of mountain sheep blocking the narrow dirt winding roads, looking out over turquoise glacial rivers flowing through barren canyons, and seeing prayer flags fluttering brightly against a deep blue sky made me realize how special this hidden corner of India really is. I found that getting to Spiti Valley is surprisingly budget friendly, though it requires patience due to the long, rugged journey. A typical week-long journey in Spiti can cost anywhere from $250 to $500 per person overall, or roughly $35 to $60 a day, depending on how you choose to travel. Local government buses from Shimla or Manali offer an extremely cheap way to get around for just a few dollars, while hiring a private 4x4 vehicle with a driver runs about $50 to $70 per day shared among a group. Booked Force Urbania for a 5-day Delhi-Manali tour. The van was brand new, very clean, and equipped with reclining captain seats, USB ports, and a strong AC. It also had ample luggage space. The driver, Dharamveer, was polite, punctual, and drove safely in the hilly areas. Booking was hassle-free with transparent pricing and staged payments. This Himalaya tour was simply incredible. It perfectly blended adventure, culture, and stunning landscapes. Starting in Salzburg-Frankfurt-Delhi-Dharamsala went smoothly. The beginning in Dharamsala, nestled in the green Kangra Valley with views of the Dhauladhar range, was magical. The first few days of riding through Kangra, Manali, Lehaul, and the misty forests of Kullu Valley were ideal for settling in. The moment we drove through the Rohtang Tunnel and emerged in the stark, barren Lahaul Valley was spine-tingling — the contrast was indescribable. Zanskar was undoubtedly the highlight. Spending two nights in Leh at an altitude of over 3000 meters for acclimatization was absolutely the right decision. Riding over Wari La and Khardung La, combined with visiting Karsha and Zangla while staying with a local family, gave me a glimpse of what "true India" is. And the barley whiskey? Unforgettable! 😄 The Leh-Manali Highway, with its lakes above 5000 meters, and the solitary stretch across Sach Pass through Pangi Valley were unparalleled experiences. The organization was flawless, and the guides were experts on every road and monastery. We always felt secure. After 15 days of motorcycle riding, we arrived back in Dharamsala to enjoy a splendid breakfast at Julian’s Café, featuring homemade bread, jam, bacon, and fried eggs with a touch of Viennese flair. Following a day of relaxing in torrential rain, we wrapped up with three days of cultural exploration. Traveling by taxi to Amritsar’s Golden Temple, then flying to Delhi, taking another taxi to Agra for the Taj Mahal, and finally returning for the flight home—all of it revealed a world entirely different but equally fascinating.
