Buy the combined cable car ticket in Ortisei the night before in July/August; the 08:00 cabin sells out by 09:30. At the top, skip the selfie crowd at the cross and walk 15 min north to where the ridge empties—just chamois, bell-cows, and a single bench. I packed a loaf from the Ortisei bakery (€3.50, card) and ate it with mountain cheese bought at the valley Coop (cash for small amounts). The ridge path is signed but unrailed in places; if you’re scared of edges, stay on the inland side of the meadow. Mistake: I wore a cotton hoodie in September—the wind off the Sella dropped the feel temp to 4°C by noon. Now it’s always windproof + gloves in the daypack. Another: the last gondola down is 17:30 in summer; miss it and you’re hiking 1,000 m down to Santa Cristina.
