It takes less than 60 minutes by bus or three-wheeler from the nearby town of Dambulla to get there. I think this is the most famous World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka. The climb is long and there is almost no shade, so if you have sensitive skin, it's a good idea to bring sunscreen. Also, please bring a towel. The Aluvihare Rock Temple is a popular and impressive temple which you should visit if you are in Matale District. This landmark is far from the nearest city, you must arrange a private driver to get there. The recommended sightseeing time is between one to two hours. This may be one of the most interesting Buddhist temples I've ever visited. It's situated on top of a rock and consists of several buildings and caves with a stupa on the very top of the rock. There is no need to hire a guide, however, if you are into history and want to know more details of the art work then you might need one. We spent 9 wonderful days in Sri Lanka (June 28 – July 6) as a family (myself, my wife, and our two daughters aged 10 and 12), organized by SLPD (Sri Lankan Personal Drivers), and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Our journeys were made comfortable with a nine-seater mini-van, ideal for our family and luggage. Our itinerary took us from Negombo to Dambulla, including a jeep safari in Minnerya and a visit to the Polonnaruwa archaeological site. We explored the Golden Temple of Dambulla and the spice gardens in Matale, followed by an early morning climb of Sigiriya Rock, one of the most mesmerizing experiences of the trip. From there, we traveled to Nilaveli for two days of pure beach relaxation, before heading to Kandy. Along the way, we visited the village of Hiriwadunna and enjoyed a traditional Kandyan dance performance in the evening. The journey continued to Ella, where we took the iconic scenic train ride and explored the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak, and Ravana Falls, finally ending in Weligama. What truly made this trip exceptional was how well it was balanced in terms of variety: historical sites, UNESCO heritage spots, natural reserves, genuine cultural immersion, and stunning beaches. It was a complete itinerary, catering to every member of the family’s preferences. I want to highlight the excellent communication with the SLPD team. Both before and during the trip, they offered valuable advice on what to visit and how to make the best use of our time, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience. Special mention goes to our driver, Nali: always accommodating, kind, and professional. He handled last-minute requests effortlessly and tailored our experience while prioritizing our safety, which is especially important when traveling as a family. His restaurant and shopping recommendations were consistently excellent and of high quality. We wholeheartedly recommend SLPD to anyone wanting to explore Sri Lanka in an authentic and worry-free way!
