Merseyside travel guide and discussion

What an amazing two hours! Our tour was led by Ryan and Billy, who work together like a comedy duo with impeccable timing, reminiscent of Morecambe and Wise. Billy’s delivery also carries a touch of The Rock from *Jungle Cruise*! But beyond the humor lies a genuinely intriguing tour. They manage to transform two hours of engineering into a captivating exploration of what happens behind the scenes of the Mersey Tunnel. Although I drive through it often, I had no idea what was hidden down there. During the tour, you get to visit refuge areas, old control rooms, Egyptian-style carvings, stunning Art Deco interiors, and parts of the tunnel infrastructure that most people wouldn’t know exist. It highlights the incredible achievement of British engineering—over 90 years later, it’s still standing strong. At just £14, it's great value for money. They even include a bit of Merseytravel PR, explaining the tolls and where the funds go. Let’s just say visitors from outside Merseyside seemed a bit envious! Be ready for plenty of steps, hard hats, and hi-vis gear—it all heightens the experience. **If you've ever driven through the Mersey Tunnel and wondered about the mysteries behind those doors, book this tour. It's absolutely fascinating, highly entertaining, and thoroughly recommended.

Liverpool turned out to be one of those cities where I could fill an entire day without spending much at all. I started at the Royal Albert Dock, walking along the waterfront and taking in the Three Graces across the river. The atmosphere alone made the visit worthwhile. From there, I wandered into the Museum of Liverpool, which is completely free and gave me a much better understanding of the city beyond its Beatles reputation. I liked how easy it was to explore at my own pace. Later, I visited the Walker Art Gallery, then walked through St George’s Quarter to see the impressive St George’s Hall. Both were great stops when I wanted a little culture without paying an entrance fee. I also spent time at Liverpool Central Library, wandered through Sefton Park, and walked along the Liverpool Waterfront as the afternoon light changed. By evening, I realized Liverpool had given me museums, architecture, parks, music history, and waterfront views all without needing an expensive itinerary. For a city break, that felt like a pretty good deal. #liverpool #unitedkingdom

Crosby Coastal Park is closely connected to Liverpool, offering local residents and visitors a refreshing seaside getaway that is just a short trip away from the city centre. Located on the coast of Merseyside, it boasts wide sandy beaches and open sea views. This coastal park is famous for the “Another Place” iron men sculptures by Antony Gormley standing along the shore. You can walk along the coastline, listen to the waves and enjoy the fresh sea breeze. Many people come here for seaside walks, picnics and watching beautiful sunsets over the Irish Sea. Compared with busy city attractions, Crosby Coastal Park delivers a totally different atmosphere. It is a perfect place to escape urban noise and embrace nature. It is a fantastic local discovery for people who love coastal scenery. I'll admit it... I only popped into Lunko by the Lane for a quick pastry. I left wondering why nobody talks about this place more. Tucked away on Lark Lane, right beside Sefton Park, Lunko has that cosy neighbourhood feel where the staff greet you with a smile and somehow make you want to stay longer. The shelves are filled with fresh bread, beautiful pastries and bakes that are almost too pretty to eat. My pick? The Pistachio Cube Croissant. Crispy, buttery layers on the outside, packed with rich pistachio filling inside, every bite was worth it. 🥰 If you're visiting, I'd recommend going in the morning for the best selection. Grab a coffee, pick up a pastry (or three), then take a slow walk through Sefton Park just a couple of minutes away. It's honestly one of the nicest ways to spend a morning in Liverpool. Sometimes the best places aren't the loudest, they're quietly waiting on Lark Lane. ✨ #foodblogger #foodie #travel #localfood #liverpool #uktrip #bakery #croissant #foodiefinds #food

Court Hey Park is a beautiful hidden green treasure in Liverpool’s suburbs, mostly known by local residents rather than tourists. The park features wide, well-kept lawns and a long tree-lined pathway stretching deep into the green space. When I walked along the path, I was surrounded by rows of tall trees. In autumn, their leaves turn golden and warm, creating a dreamy scenery. Locals come here for jogging, walking dogs, picnicking and relaxing away from the busy city centre. This quiet park offers a peaceful escape from crowded tourist spots. There is plenty of open space for people to unwind and enjoy fresh air. If you want to experience the everyday life of Liverpool locals, Court Hey Park is an excellent local discovery. It is simple, natural and full of quiet charm. #localdiscoveries #localdiscoveries

Sandhills Railway Station is a major stop on the Merseyside system, offering connections to Liverpool City Centre, Southport, Ormskirk, and many areas in between. On match days when Everton F.C. plays at their impressive new stadium, the station gets very crowded. It's well-organized, featuring covered sections for bad weather. Overall, it’s just a well-maintained, neat, and tidy station.

Merseyrail consistently ranks as the most reliable UK train operator, and their new trains are incredibly sleek. I've been using Liverpool trains since the 70s, and they've always been dependable for getting around Merseyside quickly. The station and train staff are friendly and helpful, creating a safe and pleasant experience.

If you’re a football pilgrim chasing authentic, historic British football culture, no stop in Liverpool hits harder than Goodison Park, the beloved long-term home of Everton FC, fondly nicknamed “The Grand Old Lady” by generations of Toffee supporters. As one of England’s oldest purpose-built professional football stadiums and an irreplaceable global football landmark, this 130-year-old ground delivers raw, unfiltered matchday atmosphere, layered sporting heritage and a deep dive into Merseyside’s unique football divide—essential reading for any fan planning a UK stadium tour or Premier League match trip. A Ground Steeped in Unmatched Football History Opened officially on 24 August 1892, Goodison Park revolutionised British football as the country’s first stadium constructed solely for professional football use, a groundbreaking design by iconic stadium architect Archibald Leitch. Before Goodison, clubs shared multi-sport venues; Everton’s decision to build a dedicated football home set a template copied across the UK and Europe for decades. Over its century-long lifespan, the Grand Old Lady hosted landmark moments etched into football folklore: Dixie Dean’s legendary 60 league goals in the 1927–28 season, historic FA Cup semi-finals, 1966 FIFA World Cup group stage matches, countless fiery Merseyside derbies against city rivals Liverpool, and unforgettable European nights under floodlights. Tucked in the residential Walton district, just one mile from Anfield, Goodison sits amid tight terraced brick streets, blending seamlessly into a tight-knit working-class community that lives and breathes Everton blue every matchday. Though Everton has relocated to Bramley-Moore Dock, Goodison Park remains preserved as a protected football landmark, open for guided stadium tours, museum visits and special fan events—its legacy far outliving its daily matchday role. Immersive Stadium Tour Experience (Visitor Highlight) For non-matchday travellers, the official Goodison guided tour is the centrepiece of your visit, lasting roughly 2–2.5 hours and covering every iconic corner of the ground: 1. Player Tunnel & Pitchside Walk: Step through the same tunnel trodden by Dixie Dean, Neville Southall and modern Everton stars, then stand pitchside on the well-worn turf with unobstructed views of the four classic stands. 2. Gwladys Street End: The beating heart of Everton’s fanbase, where the loudest chants, banners and lifelong supporters gather. Guides share untold stories of derby-day chaos and title celebrations here. 3. Everton Heritage Museum: Packed with priceless memorabilia—vintage blue jerseys, original league trophies, Dixie Dean’s boots, historic match programmes and old stadium seating fixtures. Interactive exhibits detail the club’s founding and Goodison’s architectural evolution. 4. Press Rooms, Directors’ Boxes & Changing Rooms: Explore behind-the-scenes areas closed to regular matchday fans, including vintage media suites and retro home/away player changing rooms. 5. Stadium Shop & Blue Bar: Finish your tour at the official Everton megastore stocked with retro Goodison merchandise, plus the on-site Blue Bar serving local Merseyside ales and classic British pub food. Tour operating hours run 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily (closed on major public holidays), and pre-booking tickets online via Everton’s official site is strongly recommended for weekend visits. Matchday Atmosphere: A Cauldron of Unrivalled Passion If you secure tickets for a special commemorative fixture or heritage game at Goodison, prepare for one of the most electric atmospheres in European football. Unlike sleek modern arenas, Goodison’s compact four-sided bowl design traps every chant, cheer and roar—creating a wall of noise that physically vibrates through the stands. Local matchday rituals add unforgettable flavour to your trip: · Wander Goodison Road 90 minutes pre-kickoff to spot fan murals, street vendors selling blue scarves and classic Everton fudge (the origin of the “Toffees” nickname). · Stop at nearby community pubs like The Royal Oak, a historic supporter spot serving hearty scouse stew, local lager and pre-match pies. · Join fans singing timeless Everton anthems like Z-Cars as players emerge from the tunnel—a Goodison tradition dating back decades. Even casual neutral visitors leave blown away by the loyalty and warmth of Evertonians, who proudly frame Goodison as “the People’s Club” ground, built for working-class fans rather than corporate luxury. Practical Travel Guide: How to Reach Goodison Park By Train (Most Convenient from Liverpool City Centre) Catch Merseyrail Northern Line trains from Liverpool Central or Lime Street Station to Kirkdale Station—only a 13-minute walk through quiet residential streets to the stadium turnstiles. Trains run every 10–15 minutes all day, with extra matchday shuttle services post-final whistle. Sandhills Station is a secondary option, around an 18-minute walk away. By Bus From Queen Square Bus Terminal opposite Lime Street, take routes 19, 20, 21 or special matchday shuttle 919, dropping off directly on Goodison Road or Spellow Lane, steps from the stadium entrances. By Car & Parking Limited on-street residential parking is strictly controlled on matchdays. The closest public car park is at Stanley Park, priced around £10 per vehicle, a short 5-minute stroll from the main stands. City centre taxis take roughly 15 minutes to reach Goodison from Lime Street. Walking From central Liverpool’s Ropewalks district, the walk to Walton takes 45–60 minutes, ideal for slow sightseeing fans eager to soak up local neighbourhood vibes. Local Tips for First-Time Visitors 1. Allocate at least half a day for your trip: combine the 2-hour stadium tour, museum browsing and a meal at a nearby local pub for a complete football landmark experience. 2. Grab retro Goodison souvenirs—vintage replica shirts and mini stadium models are exclusive to the on-site shop and make perfect travel mementos. 3. Pair your Goodison visit with a Liverpool city football day trip: travel 20 minutes to Anfield to compare the two historic Merseyside rival stadiums and fully grasp the city’s split football identity. 4. Wear comfortable walking shoes—stadium tours include plenty of stair climbing across all four stands, and neighbourhood walks cover uneven terraced streets. 5. Photography is permitted across the stadium and museum (no flash inside exhibition rooms), perfect for sharing football landmark travel content for social media. Final Verdict: Why Goodison Park Belongs on Every Football Fan’s Bucket List Modern super-stadiums dominate Premier League travel itineraries today, but Goodison Park offers something irreplaceable: genuine, unpolished football history rooted in over a century of community, heartbreak and triumph. As a defining #footballlandmark of Northern England, this Victorian ground isn’t merely a stadium—it’s a living museum of British football’s golden age, preserved for fans to explore long after Everton’s matchday departure. Whether you’re a die-hard Evertonian, a casual Premier League tourist or a dedicated football landmark collector, a day exploring the Grand Old Lady delivers an emotional, authentic travel experience you won’t find anywhere else in the UK. Plan your visit early, soak up every chant and historic detail, and pay homage to one of football’s most beloved old grounds. Location: Goodison Rd, Liverpool L4 4EL, United Kingdom Recommended Visiting Time: 2–3 hours (tour + museum) #footballlandmarks #Everton #LiverpoolTravel #UKFootballTour #StadiumGuide #PremierLeagueHeritage #footballlandmarks

It is so amazing and impressive to watch the Beautiful Sunset at West Kirby Beach of Wirral Peninsula, Merseyside. It is quite close to Liverpool City Centre. You can just take Merseyrail or Cross River Bus Number 437 and depart at West Kirby Station directly. There are lots of tourism attractions like easy and flat walking trails "Wirral Way" and around the Marine Lake, as well as pubs and restaurants near the train station. It may be very crowded under the hot weather!

#holidayitinerary Exploring Liverpool city center is such a fun and vibrant experience. The mix of historic landmarks and modern attractions makes every corner feel special. Walking around, you cannot miss the grand architecture, from the Royal Liver Building to the beautiful St George’s Hall. At the same time, the shopping scene at Liverpool One adds a modern buzz with plenty of stores, restaurants, and places to hang out. The city center also carries the spirit of The Beatles everywhere, with music spots and little touches of the band’s history adding charm to the streets. I really enjoyed how walkable the area is, with plenty of cafés and pubs to stop and soak up the atmosphere. At night, the city comes alive with music and laughter, giving it a welcoming energy. Whether you are here for history, culture, or just good vibes, Liverpool city center has it all.

Liverpool is a cathedral city, port city, and metropolitan borough in Merseyside, England. It had a population of 496,770 in 2022. The city is located on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary, adjacent to the Irish Sea, and is approximately 178 miles (286 km) northwest of London. Liverpool is the fifth largest city in the United Kingdom and the largest settlement in Merseyside. It is part of the Liverpool City Region, a combined authority with a population of over 1.5 million. Residents of Liverpool are often called "Scousers" in reference to scouse, a local stew made popular by sailors in the city, while "Scouse" is also the most common name given to the distinctive local accent. The city's cultural and ethnic diversity has resulted from its history of attracting immigrants, especially from Ireland, Scandinavia, and Wales; it is also the home of the earliest black community in the UK, the earliest Chinese community in Europe, and the first mosque in England.

went to LFC to catch a football match + signed up for the museum tour. - do note that museum tour on game days do not include player changing room (sadly) and usually are very crowded. didn’t really have a choice since we were only there for the game so I cramped everything together ): however, the tours were excellent and guides were very funny. #roadtrip#summervacation
