Ulaanbaatar is beautiful but not recommended in August and September. Here’s the honest truth!!!
Honest truth❗️Ulaanbaatar is stunning, but I really don’t recommend visiting in August or September😭
Who understands! Ulaanbaatar is truly an underrated hidden gem✨
Half is vast, sweeping grasslands, and half is a laid-back, healing exotic small city. Look up and you’ll see the bluest sky and whitest clouds, with evening breezes carrying the scent of fresh grass. The atmosphere is simply magical!
But! As someone who just finished a deep trip to Ulaanbaatar, here’s a heartfelt honest truth: Ulaanbaatar is beautiful, but definitely don’t choose to travel in August or September!
Most online guides only praise the summer grasslands, but no one mentions the hidden pitfalls of these two months. You only realize how frustrating it is after experiencing it. Today, I’ll share the real situation, weather, pitfalls, and the best travel times all at once. If you’re planning a trip to Mongolia, just copy this guide!
🌧️Why do I strongly advise against visiting Ulaanbaatar in August and September?
1. Peak rainfall all year, grasslands full of mud
August is the month with the highest rainfall in Ulaanbaatar, no exceptions! Unlike the continuous rain in southern China, here the heavy thunderstorms come suddenly in the afternoon and leave quickly, but with strong impact💥
Flooding often occurs on city streets, and the dirt roads in the grasslands become muddy and slippery. Whether self-driving or joining a group in an off-road vehicle, it’s easy to get stuck or slip. The originally stunning grassland hikes, drives, and countryside check-in spots are all heavily affected. Shoes and pants get covered in mud the whole time, cutting the travel experience in half.
September is even more awkward. The weather becomes extremely unstable. Days are still mild, but evenings suddenly get cold with strong winds. Sometimes early cold fronts and first snow arrive. The temperature swings drastically between day and night, making it hard to dress properly. You’re very likely to encounter rainy days and miss the clear blue sky and white clouds that make the grasslands so beautiful.
2. High peak season prices, very low value
June to August is Mongolia’s peak travel season, with August at the absolute peak. Airfare, hotels, and local tours double in price!
Budget guesthouses almost all raise prices. Hotels in the city center triple their rates, and rooms are hard to book without reserving at least two weeks in advance. Meanwhile, grassland ger camps are in short supply. Not only are prices high, but many popular camps cut back on services and maintain facilities poorly, resulting in very low value.
September is a transition month between peak and off-season. Many grassland camps and lesser-known outdoor spots start closing. Some outdoor hikes and grassland experiences stop operating, so you’ll likely miss out on activities you want to do.
3. Poor lighting and low photo success, missing the best scenery
Who comes to Ulaanbaatar not for the healing grassland blue skies and clear, open wilderness atmosphere?
But in August and September, cloudy and rainy weather dominates. The sky is often gray and dull, lacking the clear brightness of sunny days. The healing green of the grasslands turns dark and dull. The chances of seeing sunrises and sunsets drop sharply, and the atmospheric vibe for photos disappears.
By late September, plants wither quickly. The grasslands change from healing green to bleak brown, missing the peak beauty of the Mongolian grasslands. You won’t see the fairy-tale scenery that’s so often shared online.
4. Many hidden pitfalls
Peak season crowds gather in the city center, markets, and popular spots, making photos full of strangers;
Rainy roads are slippery. Although mosquitoes decrease, the cold winds in the morning and evening are biting, making it easy to catch a cold;
Also, pickpockets and loiterers increase during peak season. In crowded places like markets and stations, the risk to your belongings is higher.
✅The real best travel times for Ulaanbaatar (tested with no pitfalls)

Key points: very few tourists, affordable prices, excellent value for hotels and flights, no crowds, exclusive access to the grasslands, and a fully satisfying travel experience.
🌟Early October [peak autumn atmosphere]
Early autumn in Ulaanbaatar is breathtaking! The grasslands turn golden, forests blaze with color, and the vast wilderness feels desolate yet atmospheric—perfect for high-end travel photography.
The weather is clear with little rain, roads are stable, tourists are sparse, and the atmosphere is quiet and healing. This is the best time for those who love unique atmospheres and want to avoid crowds.
