Coupled with the equally enormous reclining Buddha and the sitting Buddha(in the course of construction) and the forest of ten thousand small Buddhas not to mention the nearby Thanboddhay pagoda, it makes for a fascinating day out. From Mandalay I travelled by local minibus to Monywa and then hired a motor bike taxi for the 20 Km journey. cost 15,000 kyat for 3 hours. While the aesthetic impression leaves overtones of Kitsch the climb to the 16 floor of the standing Buddha is rewarding for the absence of other Westerners and the warmth and friendliness of the local pilgrims. However, due to its overly gaudy appearance, it lacks the solemnity of traditional Burmese pagodas and instead resembles a large amusement park, successfully capturing the attention of visitors. #travel #thingstodo We found this site amazing and quite different from other places that we visited in Myanmar. We took a day to travel from Mandalay and Bagan. This was the highlight of that day, but the other stops were great and together made for a great, unforgettable day. The site itself is in terrible disrepair. Many statues are crumbling and you find ancient Buddha parts lying in piles. The caves are small and some are still fabulously decorated. Many have intricate entrances carved out of the stone cliff around, giving it the feeling of a mini-Buddhist Petra. Since there are no other tourists, you feel like you are still discovering parts and things that other Westerners may never have noticed. The combo of rough and unvisited made the site feel a lot more adventurous than other places. For the trip from Mandalay to Bagan, we visited the 1000 budddhas, the giant Buddhas of Bodhi Tataung, and Thanboddhay Paya for the day. Each site was WELL worth the time and extra distance required to get there.
