Muli|The Last Secluded Sanctuary in Western Sichuan! A Hidden Garden with an Average Temperature of 16℃
As the summer heatwave sweeps across the city, we've uncovered a nearly local-only known summer retreat — Muli, Sichuan! Nestled deep in the Daliang Mountains, this hidden paradise boasts an average summer temperature of just 16℃. At night, you’ll gather around the fire pit to warm up; air conditioning is unheard of here.
🌲 Why must you visit Muli in June?
Muli truly is the last secluded sanctuary in Western Sichuan, more pristine than Daocheng and quieter than Lugu Lake:
✅ Far but worth it: 1-hour flight from Chengdu to Xichang, then a 4-hour drive into the mountains from Xichang, with breathtaking scenery along the way
✅ Unbelievably cool: Average summer temperature of 16℃, 14℃ cooler than Chengdu, you’ll need a jacket at night
✅ Stunning scenery: Snow-capped mountains, alpine lakes, primeval forests, alpine rhododendrons, Tibetan Buddhist temples—scenery at every step
✅ Few people, peaceful: Almost no commercialization, you might be the only family on the whole mountain
✅ Rich culture: A sacred site of Tibetan Buddhism, Muli Grand Monastery rivals the Potala Palace hidden deep in the mountains
Muli in June is unrealistically beautiful. The water of Changhaizi Lake is so blue it looks almost black, rhododendrons bloom from 2000 to 4000 meters elevation, the golden roof of the grand monastery sparkles in the deep mountain valleys, clouds drift right beside you, and you can almost reach out and touch them.
🗺️ Suggested itinerary
Muli’s attractions are spread across valleys, so a 4-day, 3-night trip is recommended for an immersive experience:
Day 1: Xichang → Yanyuan → Muli County (stay in town to acclimate to altitude)
Day 2: Muli Grand Monastery → Changhaizi Lake → stay in lakeside tents
Day 3: Kangwu Grand Monastery → Waerzai Grand Monastery → stay in Tibetan family guesthouse
Day 4: Cundong Lake → return to Xichang
🌟 Must-visit spots in Muli
1️⃣ Muli Grand Monastery "Golden Roof Hidden Deep in the Mountains"
A Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhist monastery nestled deep in the mountains, built along the hillside. The golden roof and white walls shine brightly in the deep valley. Inside, a nearly 10-meter-tall bronze statue of Qiangba Buddha is solemn and majestic. From the monastery’s high vantage point, you can see clouds rolling through the canyon and prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze. 👶 Tip for families: The mountain roads are winding, bring motion sickness medicine in advance.
2️⃣ Changhaizi Lake "Alpine Emerald"
Muli’s most beautiful alpine lake, its water green as emerald, surrounded by dark green primeval forests and rhododendron groves. In June, the rhododendrons bloom into a sea of pink and purple flowers by the lake, reflected in the mirror-like water. Walking slowly along the lakeside boardwalk, you can see clear stones and swimming fish beneath the water, so peaceful it feels like time has stopped.
3️⃣ Kangwu Grand Monastery "White Stupa on the Grassland"
Located on a high mountain meadow over 3000 meters elevation, backed by forest and facing the grassland. In June, wildflowers cover the meadow and yak herds leisurely stroll around the monastery. The murals inside the main hall are exquisite. After spinning the prayer wheels, step outside where the sunlight shines perfectly on the grassland, creating a serene scene you won’t want to leave.
4️⃣ Cundong Lake "Tears in the Clouds"
A higher elevation lake where thin ice still floats on the surface in June. The water shows a gradient of blue and green. Surrounding it are rolling meadows and exposed limestone mountains, both desolate and magnificent. Standing here, the clouds seem so low they almost touch the lake surface, and the wind carries a crisp chill.
5️⃣ Waerzai Grand Monastery "Cliffside Temple"
An ancient monastery built on a mid-mountain cliff, with a bottomless canyon below. The mountain road to the temple is lined with prayer flags that flutter like rainbows in the wind. Standing on the temple platform and looking down, the entire canyon stretches beneath your feet, leaving you speechless with awe.
6️⃣ Luya Highway Section
The road from Muli to Lugu Lake is known as the most scenic route in Western Sichuan. In June, the route is lined with alpine rhododendron seas, each turn of the wheel reveals a new painting. Find a quiet spot to stop and the sea of clouds and endless snow mountains will unfold right before your eyes.

❌ Very poor signal, often no service in canyon areas, download offline maps in advance
❌ Accommodation is simple, hot water supply on the plateau is unstable, be prepared
