I’ll be honest: Negombo was not one of my favourite stops in Sri Lanka. But as a final overnight before flying out of Colombo airport? It makes sense. I stayed here after travelling back from Trincomalee, mainly to avoid a long transfer on the day of my flight. For that, Negombo does the job well — it’s close to the airport, easy to reach, and practical. Would I build a Sri Lanka itinerary around it? Probably not 😅 The beaches are not nearly as beautiful as the south or east coast, and there isn’t a huge amount to do. But if you have a few hours to spare, it’s worth a wander. On a Sunday morning, I walked through the weekly market, with fresh produce, dried fish and plenty of local life. The most interesting sight was the area near Negombo Dutch Fort where fish are laid out to dry — not glamorous, but very connected to the town’s fishing identity 🐟 St Mary’s Church is also worth a quick look if you’re nearby. Negombo has a strong Catholic presence, which feels quite different after travelling through parts of Sri Lanka where Buddhist and Hindu sites are more prominent. You can also walk around Negombo Lagoon and see the fishermen’s boats, though I’d treat this more as a way to pass time than a must-see. Being on the coast, Negombo is known for seafood, but check opening times — many restaurants were closed when I walked around on a Saturday night. My honest view? Negombo is useful, not unforgettable. Stay here for one night before or after a flight if it makes your logistics easier. Wander the market if you're there on a Sunday, see the dried fish, grab seafood if somewhere good is open, then head to the airport without stress. But if your time in Sri Lanka is limited, I wouldn’t skip better beaches or cultural stops for it.

It's part of the Jetwing group, a local luxury hotel chain known for its heritage properties. When I was doing my research, I was a little uncertain – the photos online seemed quite ordinary, and I worried I might be disappointed upon arrival. But it turned out to be a complete and utter surprise! ✨ The moment I stepped into the restaurant in the morning, with its low eaves framing the shimmering ocean beyond the lawn, perfectly complemented by ancient trees, it was absolutely breathtaking. That instant alone made the entire journey worthwhile! Rooms: The rooms are incredibly spacious, designed like connected small villas. The most distinctively Bawa-esque feature is the semi-open air bathroom. Its non-enclosed design on two sides not only allows for natural ventilation but also perfectly embodies Bawa's philosophy of organically integrating architecture with nature. The interior furniture and lighting are also in a minimalist, modernist style – not a single superfluous detail! Pool: This might just be the longest hotel pool I've ever seen! I felt like I couldn't swim to the end in one go. Its length spans the entire accommodation area of the hotel, easily stretching for at least three or four hundred meters.
