Because it lies directly beneath the aurora belt, if the sky is clear, you have a 90% chance of seeing it! The air is crisp and clear, and with very little city light, you can slowly enjoy the magical curtains of light. In 2026, solar activity will be especially strong, making it a much-talked-about “aurora year.” The scenery created by the quiet lake and the vast night sky makes this a place you should definitely visit on a winter trip to Finland. During a 5-day stay, I was able to see the aurora on 3 days! And on 2 of those days, it was absolutely explosive!

Since the hotels were mainly for sleeping, I chose places that were convenient for transportation, affordable, and had decent water facilities (cleanliness, no water flooding on the floor, etc.). Single beds in Nordic countries were quite narrow everywhere. Haha. All bookings were room-only. (However, the hotel in Stockholm included a free breakfast.) 🏨 Scandic Helsinki Aviacongress 📍Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮 (near Helsinki Airport) Since the first day's plan was only to visit a sauna facility after arriving in Helsinki and then depart early the next morning for Copenhagen, I chose this hotel near the airport. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to and from the airport, which operates from early morning. Although it's far from Helsinki city center, there is a bus stop near the hotel that provides access to the city. The room was clean and spacious. The price was also affordable, making it a great choice for those with a similar schedule. 🏨 Copenhagen Island Hotel 📍Copenhagen, Denmark 🇩🇰 Hotel prices in Copenhagen were generally higher compared to other cities, possibly because it was a Saturday. Since I planned to take a bus to Stockholm the next day, I chose this hotel for its proximity to the bus terminal and reasonable price. The hotel is close to the station and bus stops, and it's just one stop away from the central station, making transportation convenient. Although I only passed through on my way to the station, there is a shopping mall next to the hotel. The room was clean and well-maintained. 🏨 Queen's Hotel by First Hotels 📍Stockholm, Sweden 🇸🇪 I searched for a hotel close to Stockholm Central Station and affordable. Although it seemed a bit far to walk from the central station and the hotel appeared slightly old, I booked it with the mindset that it was just for one night's sleep and it wouldn't matter much if it wasn't great. In the end, the distance was walkable even with luggage, and the roads weren't too bumpy, so there were no issues. The room was simple yet clean, with enough space to spread out luggage. The elevator was an old-fashioned manual type, which added a European charm. The free breakfast was also a nice bonus. 🏨 Ivalo River Camping 📍Ivalo, Finland 🇫🇮 For the three days of aurora viewing, I wanted to stay at a place with an aurora hut on the last day, so I chose this place for the first two nights to save costs. Although I had never stayed in a cottage before and was a bit worried about the shared toilet and shower facilities outside the cottage, they were very clean and well-maintained, so there were no issues. Note that bed linens and towels are charged separately from the accommodation fee (€12/person, quite expensive). There is also a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer (€15/3 hours, though I didn't use it as I brought my own detergent). Unfortunately, the weather was bad at night, so I couldn't see the aurora, but I was able to enjoy a beautiful sunset by the river just across the road. 🏨 Holiday Village Inari 📍Inari, Finland 🇫🇮 I had always wanted to stay in an aurora hut, so I booked this place. It is located by Lake Inari, and the room was spacious with a luxurious atmosphere. There are supermarkets and souvenir shops nearby. The room was equipped with cutlery, which was helpful for meals with food bought from the supermarket. I had a personal tour reservation that required confirmation, and the staff kindly assisted me with the phone call. Although I couldn't spend much time in the room due to a rescheduled aurora tour, I was able to see the aurora from the room after returning from the tour, making it a truly dreamy experience. 🥹🤍 🏨 Scandic Simonkenttä 📍Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮 Located right behind the Kamppi Chapel, this hotel is directly connected to Kamppi Station and within walking distance to Helsinki Central Station. A tram stops right in front of the hotel, providing direct access to the ferry terminal for trips to Tallinn. Kamppi Station has the Kamppi Center, a large shopping mall with stores like Marimekko and supermarkets. The supermarket stays open relatively late, which was helpful when I was short on time. Near the central station, there is also a 24-hour supermarket. The location is excellent for sightseeing in Helsinki, and the hotel is stylish and charming with a Nordic vibe.

| They look amazing in real life! 🩵 The English word for Finnish glass igloos is "igloo." A more straightforward term is "glass room." 🍀 When we went to Finland, we stayed in some very unique rooms in the Lapland region. To be honest, we still have a long way to go in developing our own ice and snow industry. 📍 There are many beautiful igloos and cabins in Rovaniemi, Saariselkä, and Inari. They all have unique shapes. 🌟 Forest cabins - chalet 🌟 Mobile mini igloos - cabin Make sure to check carefully when booking a room. 🩵 Saariselkä 📍 We visited the popular Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Saariselkä, but the rooms felt a bit small, less than 20 m², which was quite cramped. 📍 Not far away is Northern Light Village, which has newer facilities and rooms twice the size, offering great value for money. So we ended up booking Northern Light Village. 🩵 Inari 👉 In Inari, we stayed in a cabin, which was much better than the igloos. 🩵 Levi ❄ The glass igloos in Levi are cube-shaped, with a square design. The one-way mirror glass exterior walls are very stylish. 🍀 From the outside, they look like mirrors reflecting the forest, but from the inside, you can see everything outside, which is very wild. 🩵 Booking Tips ☕ Most of the glass igloos in Saariselkä include breakfast and dinner, which is convenient. The glass igloos in Levi only include breakfast, but the room rates in Levi are half the price. 🛷 The glass igloo hotels in Saariselkä, Inari, and Levi all offer aurora tours and husky sledding activities. 💰 There are also many glass igloos in Rovaniemi, but they are the most expensive. Considering that the main goal of this trip was to see the aurora, not to stay in a glass igloo, we chose to experience the glass igloos further north. 🛀 The glass igloos here all have electric water heaters, which are not convenient for showering, as you have to wait. The rooms are quite warm, thanks to air conditioning and fireplaces, but they are very dry.

| Let me share my experience of successfully chasing the aurora! I saw the aurora four times in Lapland on December 4, 5, 8, and 9, 2024. I was so lucky! I took some amazing photos, and I'll share a guide on how to take photos of the aurora later. 📍🌈Location & Time: ⚡12.4 (Aurora Tour) Saariselka-Inari, north of Nellim. I understand this place is a secret base for local aurora tours. ⚡12.4-12.5 Early Morning Northern Light Village, Saariselka. We stayed in an aurora cabin, and we saw the aurora in the resort. ⚡12.8 Northern Light Ranch, Levi. A travel resort in the same series as the previous glass cabin. We played at the husky farm during the day, and when we received an aurora alert at night, we went straight there, away from the light pollution in Levi. ⚡12.9 Near Levi Design Hotel. We also received an alert at night. But since we saw the aurora late yesterday, we didn't go out and saw the aurora with the naked eye in the dark woods near the hotel. 🈯The aurora apps we used are · Northern Lights Alert (black and green) · Aurora (black and purple) But‼️these apps are not visible to the naked eye. We frequently saw the aurora this week, and there are some commonalities. 1️⃣-You can see many stars on a clear day. 2️⃣-The sun must be completely set during the polar night. Go out after 8 pm. 3️⃣-Stay away from light sources such as houses and roads, 5-10 km is enough. The resorts in Lapland, Finland, are small towns and resorts with no skyscrapers. 4️⃣-The aurora appeared in the northern sky on these four days. Special Note⚡📳On December 4, the first day, the aurora app did not alert us. The hotel staff was also not optimistic. The weather forecast was cloudy, but there were many stars in the sky in Saariselka that day! 👉Since we had no experience and were afraid we wouldn't have another chance, we signed up for a €149 aurora tour at 5 pm. We were very lucky. When we gathered at 7:45 pm, there was already a faint green light over the hotel resort, and there were many stars in the sky! So we sped up and went north with the group. SO, the weather is clear, the direction is north, and the aurora is north of the Arctic Circle. Then wait for a grand magnetic storm!

This is a place you just won’t find accidentally. Literally in the middle of nowhere in Inari community, Finnish Lapland there’s a church that’s not located near any main roads and it’s completely inaccessible without hiking a few kilometers. Pielpajarvi used to be a winter village for the people of Inari where they used to gather for markets and listening to religious ceremonies. Anyway there was never any real village with people living there, people used to come there when the lake was frozen and hence the church and the surroundings were more easily accessible. The first church in that location was built already 1646-1648 but it was rotten and hence destroyed. The current church was built to the site and was finished 1760. The church used to be in regular use until late 19th century when it was replaced by a new church that was built near the habitation. But the wilderness Church is still occasionally in use, every year there’s a Midsummer ceremony and some couples can also use the church for their weddings. The church is located about 10 km north from the village of Inari. The address to the parking where the hiking route to the church starts is Sarviniementie 249, Inari. From Ravadasjärvi it's 2 km to Ravadas Falls, then the trail climbs "Hengenahdistuksenmäki" (Shortness-of-Breath Hill) to the fell bench where the old gold claims sit—Morgamoja hut (free open wilderness hut), Kultala museum yard, orange paint marks on trees. The cliff moss is along the Ravadasjärvi north shore: old-growth pine with Pleurozium moss hummocks ankle-deep, lake on one side, 30 m rock on the other. I panned with a claim-holder at Morgamoja for 20 EUR (found nothing, loved it). Mistake: I hiked in mid-July without a headnet and the mires ate me—DEET + mesh non-negotiable Jun–Aug. Another: I missed the last boat slot by 10 min and walked 11 km back to Njurkulahti in fog; book return before you leave the dock. Would you boat up to Ravadas and walk the Gold Trail back to Njurkulahti (8–10 hr), or base at Kultala 2 nights and day-loop the claims + cliff moss?
