Nizwa travel guide and discussion

Everyone says Oman is beautiful. After experiencing it myself, I can only say: the beauty is real, and the pitfalls are real too. Below are candid, from-the-heart truths. 🕌 Oman ✨Highlights: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat is dazzlingly white; Mutrah Souq is good for finding silver and spices; Wahiba Sands has stunning sunsets; Nizwa Fort has a lot of character; driving the cliff road on the Green Mountain is breathtaking, and the stars are especially bright at night; the Royal Opera House has an imposing exterior. 🗓️Itinerary: Day 1: Muscat → Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque → Mutrah Souq. Day 2: Muscat → Wahiba Sands, watch the sunset and stay at a desert camp. Day 3: Desert → Nizwa Fort → Green Mountain, return. 🍜Food to try: grilled meats, hummus, and Arabic flatbread with a cup of mint tea; grilled seafood is also fresh. ⚠️Travel tips: it's hot and sunny, so be sure to use sunscreen and drink plenty of water; attractions are spread out, so rent a car, and fuel can be expensive; female visitors must wear a headscarf to enter mosques; the desert has large temperature swings between day and night. It's truly beautiful, but it's very sunny and hard on your legs — one trip is enough.

Just flew back from Muscat. Looking down from the plane, it's mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Oman is a place that really stays with you. Trip highlights (must-dos) 🕌 Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque The third-largest mosque in the world. Pure white marble paired with giant Swarovski crystal chandeliers, and tons of handmade Persian carpets underfoot. Admission is free, but women must cover their heads and wear long sleeves and pants; men must also wear long pants. 🏰 Sunset at Mutrah Fort Climb to the top of the fort, and the S-shaped coastline of the Gulf of Oman is right beneath you. White houses, blue water, and sailboats in the distance—it's so quiet you won't want to say a word. Admission is 2 OMR. 🏞️ Wadi Shab Emerald pools hidden in the rugged mountains. Hike through rocky crevices, jump into the glowing green water, and swim through underwater caves to find the waterfall—it's a full-on adventure. 🏜️ Wahiba Sands Dune bashing that will have you screaming, and camel rides to watch the sunset. Stay at a desert camp at night, where the Milky Way hangs right above you with zero light pollution. 🐑 Nizwa Fort + Friday Cattle Market The heart of the ancient capital. Go on a Friday morning to see locals herding sheep and cattle—it feels like traveling back to the Arabian Nights. 5-day relaxed itinerary Day 1: Muscat city walk (Grand Mosque > Sultan's Palace > Mutrah Souq) Day 2: Dolphin watching + Wadi Shab hike Day 3: Nizwa Fort > Overnight at Wahiba Sands desert camp Day 4: Desert sunrise > Escape the heat at Jebel Akhdar Day 5: Sea views at Mutrah Fort > Buy frankincense and head home A quick note on food 🐑 Shuwa: Meat wrapped in banana leaves and buried underground to roast for 24 hours. It's so tender it falls off the bone, and it's only served during festivals. 🍮 Halwa: Made with rose water, saffron, and nuts. The old shops in Nizwa are the most authentic. ☕ Karak tea: Sweet milk tea with condensed milk and cardamom. It's 2 OMR a cup at roadside shops.

✨ Why visit Oman? 🕌 Muscat — elegant mosques, traditional souqs, the Royal Opera House and beautiful coastline. 🏔 Jebel Akhdar & Jebel Shams — spectacular mountain landscapes and canyon views. 💎 Wadi Shab — turquoise pools surrounded by dramatic cliffs; one of Oman's signature experiences. 🏜 Wahiba Sands — golden dunes, desert camps, sunsets and Bedouin-style experiences. 🏰 Nizwa — historic forts, traditional markets and one of the best places to experience Omani heritage. 🌊 Daymaniyat Islands — clear water, snorkeling, marine life and secluded beaches. 🐬 Dolphin watching — boat trips from Muscat can offer encounters with dolphins along the coast. 🌴 Salalah — particularly distinctive during the Khareef season, when the landscape becomes unusually green and misty. ❤️ The Oman experience Oman is less about rushing from one attraction to another and more about road-tripping through landscapes that constantly change — from the blue waters of the Gulf of Oman to rugged mountains, endless desert and ancient villages. A great itinerary: Muscat → Wadi Shab → Sur → Wahiba Sands → Nizwa → Jebel Shams/Jebel Akhdar → Muscat For a more luxurious trip, you can add Alila Jabal Akhdar, a desert camp in Wahiba Sands, and a private boat excursion around the Daymaniyat Islands. #travel #oman #muscat #salalah #beachlife #desert #couplestrip #familytravel #lifestyle #luxurytravel #citydaytours #localfood #art #culturaltravel #summervacation

I spent 5 days trekking through Oman, and it was a rollercoaster of emotions 🎢 The scenery is impeccable, but the experience was a mixed bag. Here are some honest truths to help you avoid the pitfalls 👇 🏜️ Trip Highlights (It really is beautiful) · Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muscat: The white marble is dazzling in the sun, and the crystal chandeliers inside are stunning. However, women must cover their heads and wear robes. Renting them at the entrance costs 5 OMR—expensive! · Wahiba Sands: The dunes look like golden waves at sunrise, and dune bashing is thrilling. But the driver tried to charge extra halfway through, so agree on a total price beforehand to avoid disputes. · Nizwa Fort: The round tower is great for photos, but the handmade silver jewelry sold in the surrounding market is three times more expensive than elsewhere. Start bargaining at 50% off. · Muttrah Souq: The spices and Arabic lamps are beautiful, but don't touch the "antiques" from street vendors—they're all mass-produced imports. 🗓️ Itinerary (Day by Day) Day 1 Muscat: Grand Mosque + exterior of the Royal Palace + Muttrah Souq Day 2 Nizwa: Fort + Falaj irrigation system, stay in a local guesthouse Day 3 Wahiba Sands: Enter the desert in the afternoon, stay in a tent camp (facilities are basic, lots of bugs) Day 4 Sur: Dolphin watching + traditional dhow shipyard. Honestly, the dolphins just jump a couple of times from a distance; low value for money. Day 5 Return to Muscat, stroll along the Muttrah Corniche 🍢 Food Recommendations · Mixed Grill: 10 OMR at a street-side shop. Generous portion, but the meat is tough. · Arabic Milk Tea: Strong spice flavor, goes well with dates. · Saffron Rice: Good with lamb, but don't order it at "high-end restaurants"—the price doubles and the portion is halved. · Biggest Rip-off: Hotel buffets cost 25 OMR with limited options; street food is much better. ⚠️ Travel Tips (Hard-learned lessons) 1. Taxis don't use meters. Negotiate the price first. For the same route, one driver might quote 5 OMR, another 15 OMR. 2. Attraction tickets have different prices for foreigners and locals. This applies to mosques and museums. It's just how it is, but it's frustrating. 3. Book desert tours and water activities online in advance. Local hotels charge a markup of over 30%. 4. Exchange currency at banks or authorized exchange offices. Hotel exchange rates are about 5% worse. 5. Women traveling alone may be stared at. Dress conservatively and avoid eye contact. 6. Buy water at supermarkets; convenience stores at tourist spots are twice as expensive. To be honest, if you love raw landscapes and culture, Oman is worth a visit, but make sure to do your homework so you don't get ripped off like I did. Have a great trip and keep your wallet safe 💸

When people think of traveling to the Middle East, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Jordan usually come to mind first. But Oman might be one of the region’s best-kept secrets. #underratedspots If you’re planning a trip to Oman, don’t just stay in Muscat—make time for Nizwa! It may not be as famous as some of Oman’s natural attractions, but I honestly had so much fun simply wandering through the old town. The narrow streets, traditional buildings, and relaxed atmosphere make it feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The two places you absolutely shouldn’t miss are the Nizwa Souq and the Nizwa Fort. The souq is full of local handicrafts, dates, spices, and silver jewelry, while the fort offers amazing views over the city and a fascinating glimpse into Oman’s history. Sometimes, the best travel memories come from places that aren’t on everyone’s bucket list. ✨ Have you been to Nizwa, or would you add it to your Oman itinerary? #Oman #Nizwa #MiddleEast

#souvenirguide Before visiting Oman, I honestly didn’t expect to spend so much time shopping… but I was completely wrong! 🤍 Oman may not be one of the most popular travel destinations, but its souvenirs are absolutely beautiful. If you love elegant Middle Eastern designs, you’ll probably have a hard time leaving empty-handed! Here are my favorite finds: 🏺 Traditional pottery with gorgeous Arabian-inspired patterns. 👜 Jute bags and woven baskets that are both stylish and practical. 🐪 Camel plushies and mascots that make adorable gifts (or travel buddies!). 🌴 And of course, dates—the classic Omani souvenir. They’re delicious and come in beautiful gift boxes. If you’re planning a trip to Oman, make sure you leave some extra space in your suitcase… you’ll probably need it! 😄 Which souvenir would you bring home? 🛍️✨ #Oman #MiddleEast #TravelShopping

🇴🇲 If you want to feel the true heartbeat of Oman, skip the obvious and head to Nizwa. This ancient city isn’t just about history—it’s about stepping into a slower, richer way of life. 🌅 At sunrise, the golden light wraps around Nizwa Fort, one of the most iconic landmarks in the country. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the Hajar Mountains and the date palm oasis below—it’s pure magic. Just a short walk away, the famous Nizwa Souq comes alive with the scent of spices, fresh dates, and traditional crafts. If you’re there on a Friday, don’t miss the lively goat market—it’s chaotic, authentic, and unforgettable. 🚗 Getting here is easy: about a 1.5–2 hour drive from Muscat, making it perfect for a day trip or a slow overnight stay. For a deeper experience, stay in a traditional guesthouse and try local dishes like shuwa (slow-cooked lamb) or fresh Omani halwa with coffee. 💡 Pro tip: Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. Winter months (November–March) are ideal for exploring comfortably. ❤️ Nizwa isn’t flashy—but that’s exactly why it stays with you. #nizwa #omantravel #middleeasttravel #culturalheritage #slowtravel #hiddenarabia #travelinspiration #authentictravel

Nizwa Fort is located in central Oman and stands as a powerful symbol of Omani history and culture. Built in the 17th century by the ruler of the time, it was designed to protect the region from foreign invaders. The castle's architectural style is unique, blending traditional Omani building techniques with defensive structures. Stepping inside, you're greeted by a thick atmosphere of history, with exhibits detailing the lifestyle, weapons, and defensive systems of the era. The highlight is the grand circular tower; you can climb to the top for a spectacular panoramic view of the entire city of Nizwa.

Oman is an amazing country. Laws restrict the construction of modern high-rises, so you’ll constantly feel like you’ve stepped onto the set of the movie "Aladdin." Renting a car is a must. For your first visit, a regular car is fine as long as you don't plan to tackle the mountains or dunes yourself (which, by the way, is prohibited by rental agreements even for 4WDs). Distances are vast and public transport is essentially non-existent. Set aside a few days for sightseeing, visit the historic city of Nizwa, and definitely head into the desert (you can find Bedouin camps on the map at the edge of the sands—any of them can organize a desert tour or camel ride for you). If you're interested, you can also book boat trips to dive with turtles or go dolphin watching. Both private and group tours are available. If you time it right, you can watch baby turtles hatch (roughly April–July, but double-check). It’s best to explore the city in the evening when the heat subsides and the night lighting makes everything look especially beautiful. Be sure to visit Rozna Restaurant near the airport. It's built like a fortress and serves authentic Omani cuisine. I highly recommend the goat meat, which is slow-cooked for two days in an underground oven.

If you travel to Oman, be sure to set aside half a day for Nizwa. It was once the capital of Oman, and also the religious and cultural center of Oman, hidden among Oman's deserts, oases, and mountains. Strolling through the ancient city streets feels like wandering through a sandcastle maze, silverware, copper incense burners, frankincense, essential oils, charcoal, dates... It truly gives the illusion of stepping into "One Thousand and One Nights." · ✅Nizwa Fort Built during the 17th century under the Ya'aruba dynasty of Oman, the main tower is 24 meters high, and the top platform offers a 360-degree view of the ancient city and the Hajar Mountains. Inside the fort, there is a defensive maze, an ancient weapons exhibition hall, and a prison. 🈺️8:00 AM - 8:00 PM, 🎫Entrance fee: 5 Omani Rials 📷If time allows, don’t miss the sunset. The setting sun bathes the fort and surrounding mountains in golden light, adding a "One Thousand and One Nights" charm. The mottled shadows cast by the fort’s high walls, streets, and door frames also make for great photos. · ✅Nizwa Souq A very local market with few tourists and little commercialization. You can find local specialties like frankincense, dates, as well as silverware, pottery, coffee pots, teacups, and various handicrafts here. · ⭐️Travel Tips 1⃣️About a 2-hour drive from Oman's capital, Muscat. 2⃣️Opposite the fort, there are tea houses, cafes, and restaurants. Don’t miss Middle Eastern-style lamb rice, grilled meat, and hot Yikhan Guli fragrant tea. The rooftop offers a wide view, allowing you to enjoy delicious food and scenery at the same time—extremely pleasant. 3⃣️The market is very crowded with locals on Friday mornings, so try to avoid it if you don’t like crowds.

If Muscat is the grand showcase of Oman, then Nizwa is its vibrant, beating heart, nestled amidst majestic mountains. This is a place where time stands still among mud-brick forts and bustling bazaars. ❗️How to get there from Muscat? ✔️By rental car (recommended): The most convenient and popular option. The drive along the modern highway takes about 1.5-2 hours (160 km). The route is scenic, passing through the Al Hajar Mountains. Allow time for stops at viewpoints. ✔️By taxi: You can arrange a full-day trip with a taxi driver. The cost will be high, but for a group of 3-4 people, it might be economical. ✔️Book a tour. ❗️What to bring with you? 1. Cash in Omani Rials (OMR). 2. A hat and sunscreen: The sun in the mountain valley can be even stronger than on the coast. 3. Comfortable shoes: You'll be walking a lot through forts and the market, where the ground is uneven. 4. A water bottle: Stay hydrated, as the air is dry. 5. Appetite and curiosity: You can haggle at the market and try local dates with Omani coffee (kahwa). ❗️What to see? 📍Nizwa Fort: A must-see! This powerful 17th-century citadel features a massive round tower. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and palm groves (wadis). 📍The legendary carved wooden doors on the city's streets. 📍Nizwa Souq: The best traditional market in Oman, and my personal favorite! Visit on Friday morning (7:00 AM to 10:00 AM) to witness the legendary livestock market where cows, goats, and camels are bought and sold. It's a unique spectacle! ❗️When to visit? Ideal season: October to March. Best to avoid: June to August. It's extremely hot (easily +45°C or higher). The trip can be challenging, especially with children. Nizwa is a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand Oman. It's a day spent in another era, surrounded by the scents of frankincense, leather, and spices, under the shadow of imposing forts. It's a journey that will stay with you for a long time. 📍Nearby Nizwa: Bahla Fort (40 km from Nizwa): A UNESCO World Heritage Site. And Jabrin Castle (30 km from Nizwa): Not just a fort, but a palace. The most elegant and well-preserved. If you're driving, you can visit these attractions in one day.

After browsing Pinterest, this itinerary looks very interesting. There isn’t much about Muscat, mostly around Sur and Nizwa. The farthest south goes a bit beyond Sur. Since I couldn’t find much information about Sur, I only allocated one day there, and one day for Nizwa as well. Finally, from Nizwa, I returned to Abu Dhabi, while he returned to Muscat. Day 1: Muscat to Sur 👉Wadi Dayqah Dam (optional)👉Bimmah Sinkhole (Hawiyat Najm Park)👉Wadi Shab👉Sur Day 2: Sur 〈Turtle Watching Route: Sur → Ras Al Hadd → Ras Al Jinz 〉 Day 3: Sur to Wahiba Sands 〈 Route: Ras Al Jinz → Wadi Bani Khalid → Wahiba Sands 〉 Day 4: Nizwa 〈 Route: Wahiba Sands → Nizwa 〉 Day 5: Nizwa to Misfat Al Abriyeen 〈 Route: Nizwa → Tanuf → Jabreen Castle, Bahla Fort → Al Hamra → ⭐️Misfat Al Abriyeen 〉 Day 6: Misfat Al Abriyeen to Jebel Shams 〈 Mountain Route: Nizwa/Misfat Al Abriyeen → Jebel Shams 〉 Day 7: Nizwa to Muscat 〈 Route: Nizwa → Wadi Qurai → Samail Castle → Muscat 〉 Google Maps points can be shared: Muscat 2-WD Road Trip https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1o3sqFxE-td_IO_ayj1Eh54uzZvT16Q8&usp=sharing Sur is a laid-back coastal town famous for its handcrafted Arabian dhow boats (traditional wooden Arab boats). The shipyards are a major highlight of the Sur trip, still building dhows using almost the same techniques from hundreds of years ago. The Sur Maritime Museum also offers some historical background. Sur also has beautiful seaside promenades, and you can visit the small Sur Fort (free entry). For desert clothing, try to wear light colors. Whether long skirts, short skirts, or white, they all photograph well, especially paired with a vibrant headscarf 🧕❤️

09:00 🚗 Check out from the Muscat hotel and head towards Nizwa along the mountain road, passing through the Hajar Mountains. 11. 00 🏰 Nizwa Fort – Step into the 17th-century military fortress built by the Yaruba dynasty, climb the 35-meter-high round main tower, and use a wide-angle lens to capture the 24 cannon openings alongside the sapphire blue mosque dome in one frame. Check in here at Oman’s version of Monument Valley. 🛍️ Nizwa Souq ▪️ The cattle and sheep market is only on Fridays, so we missed it. ▪️ When tasting the rose-flavored sweet Halwa with cardamom coffee, the stall owners enthusiastically offer refills. 12. 30 🌄 Head to Misfat Al Abriyeen village! The car winds along the cliff edge, overlooking the 3,000-year-old village that looks like a palm tree puzzle embedded in the mountains. 🍴 Lunch at Misfat ancient house – Sit on the terrace of a 400-year-old mud-brick house, enjoy spiced stewed chicken dipped in flatbread, with the Falaj water channel gently flowing beneath your feet. 14:30 🕌 Jabrin Castle Compared to the ruggedness of Nizwa Fort, here you’ll find painted domes and carved porches. 16. 00 🏛️ Oman Heritage Museum – Redefine your expectations of a museum. 17. 30 🌇 Return to Nizwa and check in at the Intercity Hotel. Useful TIPS Nizwa Friday cattle and sheep market starts at 7:00 AM. The museum stops admitting visitors one hour before closing; it’s recommended to allow 90 minutes. Wear non-slip shoes for hiking in Misfat village; some narrow alleys require sideways passage.

🇴🇲 Oman's Tale of Two Cities: Nizwa and Jabreen, a Millennia-Spanning Fortress Epic If Muscat is Oman's dazzling facade, then the inland city of Nizwa is the ancient city that carries the soul of this land. Winding along the Hajar Mountains, sandy peaks intertwine with lush date palm oases, and the scenery outside the car window seems to flow from the depths of time. As the heart of the "Land of a Thousand Forts," Nizwa and its two surrounding ancient castles – Nizwa Fort and Jabreen Castle – connect Oman's past into a living history book. 🏰 Nizwa Fort: The Hardcore Romance of the Middle East's "Monument Valley" This fort, built in the 17th century, is a masterpiece of Omani defensive architecture and was once the power center of the Imamate. Its design is imbued with military wisdom at every turn: densely packed defensive holes in the tower, narrow staircases allowing only one person to pass, and hidden trap doors – every detail tells a story of resisting foreign invaders. Standing before the massive mud-brick walls, one can clearly feel the profound power of "writing war with bricks and stones." The fort's circular main tower, over 30 meters high, is an absolute landmark of Nizwa Old City; its sturdy silhouette is visible from a distance in the city center. From the top, overlooking the city, the earthy yellow rooftops of the entire old city merge with the distant Hajar Mountains, as if a three-dimensional Omani historical documentary unfolds before your eyes. 📸 Photo Tips · Best Time: Before 10 AM or after 4 PM, the soft sunlight will cast a golden hue on the mud-brick walls, creating rich layers. · Classic Angle: Photograph facing the Souq (old city market), capturing the fort's circular tower, old city rooftops, and distant mountains in one frame, showcasing the regional charm. · Creative Human Interest: Stand at a staircase corner and use the circular opening for composition, allowing figures and light to intertwine, easily creating stunning, story-rich human interest photos. 🕌 Jabreen Castle: A "Literary Fortress" Full of Poetry and Wisdom Driving west from Nizwa for 25 minutes (less than 30 kilometers), you'll arrive at Jabreen Castle, which has a distinctly different ambiance. If Nizwa Fort is a rugged warrior, Jabreen is a gentle poet – this palace, also built in the 17th century, was commissioned by Imam Bil'arab bin Sultan, focusing on education and art, and served as Oman's intellectual and cultural hub at the time. The castle holds surprises: well-preserved painted walls, vigorous Arabic calligraphy, a richly stocked ancient library, and spacious classrooms, all exuding an atmosphere of knowledge and aesthetics. Sunlight filters through geometric carved windows, casting blue and green intertwined shadows on the ground; every wooden door carved with intricate patterns, every room retaining its old furnishings, softly tells stories of past civilizations. 📸 Photo Tips · Must-Shoot Scene: Look up from the central courtyard; light streams down from the dome, creating a sacred, "divine revelation" atmosphere that is truly captivating. · Ideal for Portraits: The circular wall on the top floor is an excellent spot, framing subjects with distant villages and mountains, giving photos an inherent narrative quality. 📍 Route and Itinerary Suggestions · Classic Route: Start from Muscat, drive about 1.5 hours to Nizwa (allocate 3-4 hours to explore the fort and old city market); then drive west for 25 minutes to Jabreen Castle (suggest 2 hours for visiting). · Along the Way Bonus: En route, you can visit oasis villages, date palm plantations, and local small markets to experience Oman's most authentic way of life. · Easy Option: There are organized "Nizwa-Jabreen" day tours available locally, eliminating the need to worry about transportation, suitable for travelers with limited time. From the majestic power of Nizwa Fort to the refined wisdom of Jabreen Castle, this short journey of tens of kilometers is like a dialogue with a civilization spanning millennia. Oman's beauty is never ostentatious, yet it is hidden in the textures of mud-brick walls, the interplay of light and shadow in carved windows, and the gentle mountain breeze, quietly narrating the unique warmth of civilization on the Arabian Peninsula.

Nizwa is a city of stunning history and dramatic landscapes, and I recently discovered it has a beautiful coffee scene to match! After a long day exploring the ancient Fort and bustling Souq, here are the four fantastic cafes I visited that blend great coffee with stunning atmosphere. Save this list for your next trip to the Sultanate! 1. Athar Cafe: The Rooftop View Specialist This is a true Nizwa highlight! Athar Cafe is often tucked away, accessible by a charming staircase (as suggested by the rustic wooden entrance and traditional-style ceiling). It's famous for one thing: its incredible rooftop patio. · Vibe: Cozy, intimate, and perfectly situated for views. · The Highlight: Head up to the rooftop for a magical, unobstructed panorama of the majestic Nizwa Fort and the surrounding mountains. It’s the ultimate spot for a relaxed afternoon coffee and a perfect photo op. 2. Nizwa Fort Cafe: The Menu Powerhouse Located centrally, the Nizwa Fort Cafe is right in the heart of the action and offers a wide, reliable menu - perfect for refueling after a visit to the Souq. · Vibe: Classic cafe comfort with a comprehensive menu to satisfy any craving. · Must-Try: They have a huge selection! Go for a specialty Spanish Latte or, if the sun is out, choose one of their many refreshing Mojitos (like Mango or Passion). Don't forget a slice of San Sebastian Cheesecake! 3. Anat Cafe: Modern Desert Chic For travelers who appreciate thoughtful design, Anat Cafe blends traditional Omani architecture with sleek, contemporary lines. · Vibe: Stylish, modern, and airy. The exterior features warm, earthy adobe-style walls contrasted with large glass panels, giving it a bright and trendy feel. · Perfect For: A sophisticated stop for a specialty brew. It’s an ideal place to enjoy some quiet reflection in a beautiful, calm space away from the crowds. 4. Vika Cafe: The Parkside Panorama This stunning cafe is located in or right next to Falaj Daris Park, giving it a different, more serene atmosphere away from the bustling Souq. · Vibe: Traditional structure, possibly in a round fort-like building, with an expansive outdoor seating area. It's the perfect place to enjoy the vastness of Nizwa's nature. · The Highlight: The outdoor seating lets you soak in the spectacular, sweeping vistas of the rugged Hajar Mountains and the beautiful park area. It’s a wonderful spot for a moment of quiet reflection, especially at sunset. #coffee #oman #nizwa

Nizwa, the ancient city of Oman, is absolutely stunning! Highly recommended for café lovers! Oman might not be very familiar to Japanese travelers, but it’s actually a Japan-friendly country blessed with abundant tourist attractions. Don’t limit yourself to just the capital, Muscat! The best time to visit is between October and March. Even in September or April, if the temperature and humidity are low, it can be quite comfortable. However, the midday heat during the peak summer season can be overwhelming 🥵. While Nizwa can be visited as a day trip from Muscat, staying for at least one night is highly recommended. The atmosphere inside the castle from evening to night is incredibly charming. The moderately touristy Arabian vibe feels romantic💕✨ (though it might not be deep enough for those seeking a more immersive Islamic experience). There are plenty of stylish cafés ☕️💕, with LeCafe being particularly recommended for its ambiance, taste, and excellent service. The castle itself is very compact, but Nizwa as a whole is quite expansive. Additionally, Omanis are kind and friendly. If you get lost, they’ll likely assist you warmly. The family-friendly atmosphere also makes it a great destination for family trips. Local women wear abayas, but female travelers don’t seem to be required to wear them (though wearing bikinis at the beach is best avoided). · *Main Attractions:** · Nizwa Fort (recommended in the evening, entrance fee required) · Nizwa Souq (free entry) · Al Aqur Castle Walls (best from late evening to night, entrance fee required) · Mountains in the outskirts. · *Costs (as of April 2024):** Prices felt similar to Japan. Hotels in the central area (≈inside the castle walls) start at around 10,000 yen. Meals at restaurants can be as cheap as 500 yen, but budgeting around 1,000 yen is safer. Cafés start at around 400 yen. Most places accept credit cards. There’s a money exchange shop near the castle walls, which closes at noon and reopens at 4 PM. · *Access (as of April 2024):** To Muscat: By air or by bus from Dubai (operated by one company). There are no railways. From Muscat: By car or bus (2 buses per day, taking 2–3 hours). In Muscat, buses depart from the bus company’s station, and you can board them at the airport or the bus terminal. While it’s better to purchase tickets in advance, you can pay in cash if there are available seats. As of April 2024, tickets cannot be purchased online. The timetable displayed online is accurate, and buses are generally punctual, though the seats are quite cramped. There are also buses from other regional cities in Oman to Nizwa.

Getting There - Nizwa is approximately 1.5hr drive from Muscat the current capital. Attractions - Nizwa is the old capital of Oman. It's known for its iconic 17th century fort with a massive cylindrical tower. Its bustling traditional souq is famous for silver and handicrafts. It offers diverse goods from fresh produce to traditional Omani daggers reflecting Nizwa's rich cultural heritage as a former capital. Hotels - We stayed at DoubleTree by Hilton Muscat Qurum. Food & Restaurants and Shopping - There are small locally owned shops and restaurants around the area. The items are priced reasonably and the food from whenever we tried was delicious. #nizwa #nizwafort #oman #shopping #culture #middleeast
