I went to Nagano this February expecting temples, mountains and maybe a quick stop before moving on. Instead, I found a city that feels like a crossroads between several different versions of Japan Start with Zenkoji, a temple with around 1,400 years of history, right in the city. Then, less than an hour away, you can be walking through the ancient cedar forests of Togakushi, where some of the trees are around 400 years old 🌲 And then there is the food. Nagano is famous for Togakushi soba, but I also discovered oyaki, a local stuffed dumpling that became one of those foods I kept thinking about after leaving 🥢 The city is also the gateway to some seriously different experiences. You can visit Jigokudani and see the famous snow monkeys bathing in hot springs, explore the former Olympic venues, or head to Obuse for chestnut sweets and Hokusai's art. What makes Nagano special to me is that none of these experiences feel disconnected. In one trip, you can go from a 1,400-year-old temple to a mountain pilgrimage route, eat handmade soba and then watch monkeys relaxing in a hot spring 🐒 And the best part? From Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen can get you to Nagano in about 80 minutes, so it is surprisingly easy to add to a Japan itinerary 🚄 If you had just two days in Nagano, which would you choose first: Zenkoji, Togakushi, the snow monkeys, or a food adventure?

When I mentioned it was my birthday, they served me a complimentary chestnut cake and decorations at the end of dinner ♥ The chestnut flavor was incredibly rich and delicious. We also went during chestnut season for dinner, so we made our own chestnuts. We had chestnut tempura, chestnut kohan, and pureed chestnuts with a sweet bean paste containing lily bulbs. You can enjoy a variety of delicious Nagano delicacies. This area is bustling with tourist buses during the day, but at night you can enjoy a quiet, sophisticated meal in the evening. Every time the millet harvest season from mid-September to mid-October, the whole town is surrounded by the warm chestnut fragrance ~ 🌰👃 Every step you take to feel the happiness of millet, take pictures without washing the filter has burst feel! It's really busy during this time, many people come here to wait for the limited-edition chestnut dessert; even the walkway is made of corn trees, which is full of healing! The must-visit Little Busi Hall launches limited edition "Suzaku" Wagashi every year 👍, the delicate chestnut puree melts in your mouth, every bite is autumn taste, I really have never tried not to mention that I am a dessert control ~ 🎉 The garden inside is just as wonderful, all chestnut trees, and the ground floor is covered with large ripe chestnuts, very spectacular and fresh! Ganshoin Temple in Obuse, Nagano Prefecture, is an ancient temple known for its large ceiling painting, "Phoenix Glancing in All Directions," by the Edo period ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. This work dates back to Hokusai's later years, and is said to have been painted when he was just 88 years old. The phoenix appears to be glaring from any angle, and its power and vitality are overwhelming. Photography is prohibited, so the only way to see this painting is to burn it into your eyes. The temple grounds have a quiet and tranquil atmosphere. Blossoming in the spring and colorful leaves in the fall, they make for a peaceful stroll. Purpose Stay at Masuichi Kyakuden in Obuse during autumn and enjoy chestnuts! Relish the seasonal specialty, Suzaku! Accommodation Masuichi Kyakuden Address: 〒381-0201 Nagano Prefecture, Kamitakai District, Obuse Town, Obuse Within walking distance from Obuse Station. Transportation Travel from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo to Nagano Station via Keio Bus. Online reservations with seat selection are available. The one-way fare is 3,700 yen, making it more affordable than the train. The bus is equipped with WiFi and onboard restrooms. Schedule Day 1 Travel from Shinjuku to Nagano Station by Keio Bus. From Nagano Station, take a local bus to Zenkoji Temple. After visiting the temple, enjoy oyaki (Japanese dumplings). At Irohado, try the autumn-limited chestnut-filled oyaki, as well as the sweet potato version, also a seasonal specialty. Then, take the Nagano Electric Railway from Nagano Station to Obuse Station, a journey of about 30 minutes. From the station, walk approximately 10 minutes to Masuichi Kyakuden. Upon check-in, receive a voucher for Suzaku, a seasonal treat made from freshly harvested chestnuts, pureed without sugar, and served atop chestnut paste. This exclusive dessert is available to guests from September 10 to October 16. Enjoy it in a special seating area on the second floor of the Ichimura family residence at the main Obusedo store. There’s no time limit, so you can savor it leisurely with refills of roasted green tea. It was incredibly delicious! After checking in at Masuichi Kyakuden, enjoy a welcome dessert called "Karino Yama," a refined and delicious treat made of pureed chestnuts and red bean paste. The hotel offers a drink service until 7 PM, and I ordered Obuse apple juice via room service. For dinner, I indulged in a Japanese course meal featuring chestnuts at the main Obusedo restaurant. This dinner is exclusive to guests who book the dinner-inclusive plan. The meal included dishes like chestnut puree with lily bulbs and a thick sauce, chestnut tempura, chestnut rice, Shinshu pork, and autumn-inspired mushroom dishes, making for a truly seasonal feast. Day 2 Breakfast is served at Kasafuro, exclusively for hotel guests. The Western-style breakfast includes various egg dishes, and I opted for eggs Benedict. The course also features Obuse milk and Obuse yogurt. Guests of Masuichi Kyakuden can participate in Obusedo’s pop-up events at any time, unlike regular visitors who can only join during Suzaku service. At the pop-up event, I enjoyed chestnut shaved ice, which was absolutely delightful! After checking out of the hotel at noon, I strolled around visiting various chestnut confectionery shops. There are many to explore, and some even sell fresh chestnuts. Autumn is also grape season, and I found Shinano Purple and Muscat grapes sold everywhere. Obuse also has grape vineyards. Later, I visited Sakurai Kanseido to enjoy chestnut oshiruko (sweet red bean soup with chestnuts). I purchased plenty of autumn delicacies, including chestnut yokan, fresh chestnuts, grapes, and apple jam, before heading back to Nagano Station by train. At the station, I had soba with walnut dipping sauce at Kusabue, a soba restaurant, before taking the 5 PM bus from Nagano Station back home. Notes Reservations for Masuichi Kyakuden during chestnut season should be made six months in advance. Booking plans that include Suzaku or dinner in advance ensures a relaxed dining experience.

Chestnut sweets with generous amounts of chestnut paste and traditional Kurikashika. We use generous amounts of chestnut paste prepared in-house, in both Japanese and Western styles. I had planned to eat the Mont Blanc inside the store, but the line was so long, even though it was raining, that I gave up and got takeout to enjoy in the car.
