Musashi Mitake Shrine does not have lion dogs. Instead, there is Okuchi no Mago (Oinu-sama). When Emperor Yamato Takeru was on an expedition to the east, he got lost in the mist and a wolf guided him. Emperor Yamato Takeru ordered the wolf to stay in the area as Okuchi no Mago and exterminate all the demons. That's why Emperor Yamato Takeru's messenger is a wolf, and there are not lion dogs but lion wolves in the shrine grounds! Originally, Musashi Mitake Shrine holds its Shikinen Taisai in the Year of the Rooster, but now the statue of Okuchi no Mago can be worshiped in the Year of the Rabbit, which is half of the year. This is the second time in 2023. The statue can only be seen by ascending the sanctuary, so I took this opportunity to go up. Three wooden statues were moved from Okuchi no Mago Shrine to the main hall, and I was able to see them up close. The jet black wolf statue is impressive. Transportation: Take the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku to Tachikawa Station, then transfer to the Ome Line to Ome Station. Transfer to the Ome Line branch bound for Okutama and get off at Mitake Station. The entire journey takes about 80 minutes. The mountain is not very high, about 929 meters, suitable for some beginner hikers. There is a waterfall cable car along the way. It is recommended to go in autumn so that you can enjoy the autumn leaves. Mount Mitake, 929m above sea level, is located in Ome City, Tokyo. It is also called Mount Musashi Mitake and has been the subject of mountain worship since ancient times, with Musashi Mitake Shrine built on the mountaintop. You can take a cable car from the foot of the mountain to the starting point of the hiking course, but if the parking lot at the cable car station is full, you can only park a little further away, and it was quite a steep uphill walk from there to the cable car station lol There are several hiking trails, some of which are easy and take about an hour to go around, while others take 3-4 hours and involve quite a lot of climbing up and down cliffs, making it a hiking trail that can be enjoyed by both amateurs and serious hikers. Hinodeyama Peak Hinodeyama is a mountain with an altitude of about 902m located in Ome City, Tokyo. As there is little snowfall, you can enjoy hiking all year round regardless of the season. Mitake Mountain Railway (Cable Car) Opened in 1934, this cable car runs up Mt. Mitake in Ome, Tokyo, and travels between Takimoto Station and Mitakesan Station. The red one in front is the Mitake-go and the green one is the Musashi-go. It's a 45-minute walk from Mitake Station. You can get close by car or bus, but depending on the season, day of the week, and time of day, you may have to line up to park in a nearby parking lot or to ride the cable car. Deep clouds envelope Tokyo with a mix of fog and never ending silent shower like atmosphere all around. There's also a waterfall which is not of great height but the sight of it makes you want to stay there for more and more. Interestingly, surprisingly, astonishingly, we discovered a minisculest of a joint resting on some heaps of stones, during the walk to the waterfall and guess what -there was free Wi-Fi. This was a very nice day trip, walking around and seeing nature at it's finest. We not only got to see Mt. Mitake, but we also hiked along the Tama river, enjoying the beautiful scenery and waterways. #givethanks #givethanks

After enjoying English tea and delicacies at Rose Town Tea Garden, an English manor-style restaurant by the Tama River in Ome, I stepped out onto the terrace. The misty greenery of the Tama River still lingered in my heart, while outside the car window, a light, slanting rain had quietly begun to fall. The car followed Yoshino Kaido and National Route 411 (Ome Kaido) upstream. The rain washed the lush cedar forests on both banks into a deep, vibrant green, and clouds swirled between the layered mountain peaks. The entire mountain road leading to Okutama and Nippara felt like an unfolding scroll of moist ink wash painting. 🌉 Sights along the way: Canyon bridges, the Ome Line, and mountain life View of Jindai Bridge from Rose Town: Looking through the trees from the tea garden terrace, that vibrant splash of vermilion over the Tama River valley is Jindai Bridge. The red arch bridge spans across the emerald water and lush canopy, looking exceptionally bright against the overcast, rainy sky. Yoshino Kaido and the Ome Line: As the car reached the area around Kori Station, road signs shimmered under the refraction of raindrops. Looking up, an orange and yellow train on the JR Ome Line (E233 series) sped across the elevated concrete arch bridge on the cliffside. A flash of bright orange streaked through the green forest, creating a cinematic moment. Okutama Bridge and Kawai Camping Ground: Passing through the Kawai area, the elegant white A-shaped single-pylon cable-stayed bridge—Okutama Bridge—came into view. It connects Ome Kaido and Yoshino Kaido. Below the bridge lies the wide, pebbled riverbank of the Tama River. Even in the drizzling rain, the valley cabins and white cables outlined a three-dimensional geometric beauty. The charm of mountain road signs: Retro signs for wasabi pickles, the long-established hot spring inn Gyokusuiso, and the Otaba River International Rainbow Trout Fishing Ground stood neatly along the road, reminding travelers that they had officially entered the embrace of Okutama's rich landscape. ⛏️ A fantastical sight: The "Okutama Industry unmanned aerial ropeway mine cart" crossing the sky After passing Okutama Station, the road narrowed and turned into Prefectural Road 204 (Nippara Kaido), and the mountains became increasingly steep. Near Shirotae Bridge in the Nippara Valley, I suddenly looked up to see a towering, suspended steel truss arch bridge spanning two steep cliffs! This is the Okutama Industry ropeway (mine cart), famous among railway and industrial ruin enthusiasts. This dedicated cable railway, built halfway up the mountain, silently shuttles through the clouds day after day, transporting limestone from the Nippara mine to the factory below. The iron mine carts oscillate back and forth in the drizzling rain and cold mist a hundred meters in the air, like an industrial wonder from the Ghibli animation "Castle in the Sky" brought to life. ⛩️ The hidden destination: Isseki-san Shrine and Nippara Limestone Cave Following the deep, winding mountain road to its furthest point, a cool mountain breeze greeted me: Isseki-san Shrine and the roadside purification fountain: At the entrance to the Nippara Limestone Cave stands a simple, weathered stone monument—"Isseki-san Shrine." Walking up the stone steps, clear mountain spring water flows from the crevices in the rock wall. Beside the path is an elegant wooden purification fountain with a white shimenawa rope hanging from it. The mountain path is lined with delicate wild hydrangeas, looking even more vibrant and lush under the nourishment of the rain and dew. Since the Heian period, this has been a sacred mountain site for Shugendo yamabushi monks to practice and pray. Deep into the earth: The largest limestone cave in the Kanto region, Nippara Limestone Cave: Passing through the cave entrance, the temperature drops to a natural refrigerator of about 11°C. In this largest limestone cave in the Kanto region, formed by hundreds of thousands of years of water erosion, features like "Mount Shide," "Vajra Staff," and giant stalagmites look deep and dreamlike under the projection of modern colored LED lights. Outside, there is slanting rain; inside, the sound of dripping water echoes. The entire journey reaches its climax in the fantastical feeling of exploring a hidden realm deep within the earth. 🚗 In-depth travel tips Driving and road conditions: Many sections of Nippara Kaido (Prefectural Road 204) are extremely narrow, allowing only one vehicle to pass at a time (you must use passing points to let others by). Visibility is limited on rainy days, so please slow down and be careful when passing other vehicles on curves. Temperature reminder: The Nippara Limestone Cave maintains a constant temperature of around 11°C year-round. When visiting in midsummer or early autumn, be sure to keep a light windbreaker in your car. The cave is slippery, so wearing non-slip sneakers is recommended.
