Mitake – Nature near Tokyo that leaves a lasting impression.
Last weekend, I took a stroll at Mitake Gorge, and the atmosphere exceeded my expectations. As soon as you step off at Mitake Station, you can immediately walk down to the riverside trail. The crystal-clear water flows over rocks, and the sunlight reflects off the red and yellow leaves in a truly stunning way, just like a scene from a Japanese movie. 🍂✨
The trail is easy to walk, not steep, making it perfect for those who want a relaxing time and enjoy taking photos. Especially during the autumn foliage season, the red and yellow colors contrast beautifully, making the walk enjoyable and not tiring.
How to get there:
From Tokyo → Take the JR Chuo Line to Ome → Transfer to the JR Ome Line and get off at Mitake Station. It takes about 1.5–2 hours.
🍁This is a short trip that offers a full dose of nature without being far from the city. If you love serene and slightly romantic views, this place is perfect. ❤ 🍁

🌸 Tokyo: Where Neon Dreams Meet Zen Tradition
#tokyospots
Tokyo is a dazzling, hyper-efficient metropolis that seamlessly fuses its ancient past with a vibrant, high-tech future, offering a truly incomparable experience that is surprisingly accessible for the prepared traveler. Getting around this sprawling city is best done via its legendary public transportation system; the extensive JR and subway lines are clean, reliable, and incredibly efficient. The quintessential DO is to immediately purchase a Suica or Pasmo IC card, which allows for seamless, tap-and-go travel on virtually all trains, subways, buses, and even for small purchases at convenience stores. DON'T rely on expensive taxis for long distances or during rush hour; the trains will always be faster. Accommodation options are wide-ranging, from budget-friendly capsule hotels and hostels (especially in areas like Asakusa or Ueno) to compact business hotels found near every major station; for first-time visitors, basing yourself near a major hub like Shinjuku or Shibuya is recommended for convenience, despite the slightly higher cost.
Culturally, observe the deep-seated respect for order and quiet. A paramount DO is to maintain silence on all public transport—refrain from taking phone calls and keep conversations to a whisper. DON'T ever eat or drink while walking on the street, as this is considered impolite; if you buy street food, consume it immediately near the vendor. In temples and many traditional restaurants, a firm DO is to remove your shoes before entering. Crucially, DON'T tip; Japan does not have a tipping culture, and attempting to do so can sometimes be considered rude or confusing. Always carry cash (Japanese Yen, \text{¥}), as many smaller shops and restaurants are cash-only, and familiarize yourself with the respectful bow—even a slight nod of the head goes a long way. Tokyo provides an unforgettable journey through towering neon-lit landscapes, serene shrine gardens, and culinary perfection.

[Tokyo/Musashi Mitake Shrine] A land of mountain worship and guardian wolves
Musashi Mitake Shrine does not have lion dogs.
Instead, there is Okuchi no Mago (Oinu-sama).
When Emperor Yamato Takeru was on an expedition to the east, he got lost in the mist and a wolf guided him.
Emperor Yamato Takeru ordered the wolf to stay in the area as Okuchi no Mago and exterminate all the demons.
That's why Emperor Yamato Takeru's messenger is a wolf, and there are not lion dogs but lion wolves in the shrine grounds!
Originally, Musashi Mitake Shrine holds its Shikinen Taisai in the Year of the Rooster, but now the statue of Okuchi no Mago can be worshiped in the Year of the Rabbit, which is half of the year.
This is the second time in 2023.
The statue can only be seen by ascending the sanctuary,
so I took this opportunity to go up.
Three wooden statues were moved from Okuchi no Mago Shrine to the main hall, and I was able to see them up close.
The jet black wolf statue is impressive.
There is also a lodging in the village, so you can make a reservation in advance and relax while worshiping.

❥❥History
In the 7th year of Emperor Sujin's reign, Takenukawawake no Mikoto enshrined Okuninushi no Mikoto and Sukunahikona no Mikoto.
In 736, Gyoki enshrined a statue of Zao Gongen in prayer for the protection of the eastern provinces.
In 1234, Oonakatomi Kunikane restored the shrine.
In 1606, Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered the shrine to be rebuilt, facing east instead of south, as the "protector of the west" of Edo.
The current offering hall and worship hall were built by the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi.
During the Meiji era's anti-Buddhist movement, the name "Mitake Zao Gongen" was changed to "Mitake Shrine," and after the war in the Showa era, it was renamed "Musashi Mitake Shrine."

Tokyo Conquest Ome City - Mitake Honmachi
Transportation: Take the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku to Tachikawa Station, then transfer to the Ome Line to Ome Station.
Transfer to the Ome Line branch bound for Okutama and get off at Mitake Station. The entire journey takes about 80 minutes.
The mountain is not very high, about 929 meters, suitable for some beginner hikers. There is a waterfall cable car along the way. It is recommended to go in autumn so that you can enjoy the autumn leaves.
There is also a parking lot for friends who drive themselves, which is very convenient.

[Mt. Mitake] Hiking
Mount Mitake, 929m above sea level, is located in Ome City, Tokyo. It is also called Mount Musashi Mitake and has been the subject of mountain worship since ancient times, with Musashi Mitake Shrine built on the mountaintop.
You can take a cable car from the foot of the mountain to the starting point of the hiking course, but if the parking lot at the cable car station is full, you can only park a little further away, and it was quite a steep uphill walk from there to the cable car station lol
There are several hiking trails, some of which are easy and take about an hour to go around, while others take 3-4 hours and involve quite a lot of climbing up and down cliffs, making it a hiking trail that can be enjoyed by both amateurs and serious hikers.
Although it is somewhat well maintained, the terrain can become difficult to walk on as you go deeper, so we recommend wearing shoes that you are used to wearing!

Enjoy plum sweets at Kobaien
6 minutes walk from JR Hinatawada Station
3-905-1 Umego, Ome City, Tokyo
The interior of the shop has a calm atmosphere and you can relax.
We went there before 12 o'clock, so it was relatively empty.
The Ome soft serve ice cream and plum jelly are especially recommended, with their sweet and sour taste.
In addition to eating and drinking inside the shop, there is also a souvenir shop selling plum jelly, red plum manju, and other sweets.
The staff are all very kind, so we'll definitely be returning!

Recommended place for nostalgic movie billboards and cat creative art👉🏻"Showa Slideshow Museum" is very convenient. After exiting Ome Station on the JR Ome Line, walk south for about 5 minutes to reach the "Omejuku Movie Billboard Street" full of Showa nostalgia.
The museum displays the works of the famous modeler Yamamoto Takaki, which truly presents the street scenery of the Showa period🤩🤩📸️
In addition to the models, the museum also displays many precious hand-painted old movie posters from the Showa period.

Recreating the appearance of ancient snack shops that can be seen on the streets of Japan in the past, a very vivid and special museum😎😎
✅ Located on the old Aomei street, it was originally an old furniture store built in the late Meiji period. It was later converted into a nostalgic museum in the style of the Showa 30s, which lists many nostalgic merchandise.
✅ Highly recommended if you want to know the style of Japan's Showa era
✅ There are many Meiji food displays in the museum, you can check out and learn more about the history of Japanese food westernization😎

Hinodeyama Peak
Hinodeyama is a mountain with an altitude of about 902m located in Ome City, Tokyo. As there is little snowfall, you can enjoy hiking all year round regardless of the season. It is about an hour's walk from Ontake Station. It is good for day hikes and mountain climbing. When the weather is good, you can see the Kanto Plain.

Mitake Mountain Railway (Cable Car)
Opened in 1934, this cable car runs up Mt. Mitake in Ome, Tokyo, and travels between Takimoto Station and Mitakesan Station. The red one in front is the Mitake-go and the green one is the Musashi-go.
It's a 45-minute walk from Mitake Station. You can get close by car or bus, but depending on the season, day of the week, and time of day, you may have to line up to park in a nearby parking lot or to ride the cable car.
The photo was taken midway up the mountain without taking the cable car.

Deep clouds envelope Tokyo with a mix of fog and never ending silent shower like atmosphere all around. There's also a waterfall which is not of great height but the sight of it makes you want to stay there for more and more. Interestingly, surprisingly, astonishingly, we discovered a minisculest of a joint resting on some heaps of stones, during the walk to the waterfall and guess what -there was free Wi-Fi. This was a very nice day trip, walking around and seeing nature at it's finest. We not only got to see Mt. Mitake, but we also hiked along the Tama river, enjoying the beautiful scenery and waterways.

"Temple of Flowers" Near Tokyo — Ome Shiofune Kannon-ji Review.
Just a 10-minute bus ride from Kabe Station on the JR Ome Line, this is the most romantic "Temple of Flowers" in Tokyo. Founded in 645, this millennium-old temple is named "Shiofune" (salt ship) because the surrounding mountains are shaped like a boat. During the Azalea Festival (Tsutsuji Matsuri) in April and May, 20,000 vibrant pink, white, and purple blossoms blanket the hills for a truly breathtaking sight! It also features hydrangeas in June, lilies in July, and bush clovers and cosmos in autumn. The Main Hall and Amida Hall, designated as National Important Cultural Properties, offer a serene atmosphere. Take a stroll along the path from the Nembutsu-do Hall up to the Statue of Peace Kannon, and you'll be rewarded with a bonus panoramic view of Ome City. Admission is free (¥300 for adults during the festival). A weekday morning visit is highly recommended, and comfortable shoes are a must!

Trip to Nature @ Mount Mitake

river view from Mitake station
🍁 River Magic in Mitake Gorge: Autumn’s Canvas Unfolds 🇯🇵
Mitake Gorge in Ome is where Tokyo swaps city beats for nature’s melody—especially stunning when fiery leaves set the riverside aflame each autumn! Start your adventure with a mellow riverside stroll; the footpath follows the Tama River, weaving between mossy rocks and towering maples ablaze in red and gold. Pack light and wear comfy shoes for this relaxed hike—the terrain is easy but can be slippery with fallen leaves!
Make sure to linger at the iconic suspension bridge for an insta-worthy panorama: emerald river ribbons, rugged boulders, and that storybook canopy. Early mornings deliver magical mist and soft lighting for dreamy close-ups of rushing water and leaf carpets. For a bit more thrill, try river kayaking or dip your toes in at calmer spots—just watch your footing!
🧭 Practical Bits:
· Address: Mitake, Ome, Tokyo 198-0174, Japan
· Open all day, year round (no entrance fee)
· Best photo angles: From the suspension bridge, or crouched low beside polished river stones for close-up nature shots
· Closest station: Mitake—about a 10-minute walk to the gorge
⛑️ Precautions: Riversides can get crowded in peak autumn, so beat the rush by visiting before 10 AM on weekdays. Watch out for slippery stones, especially near the water’s edge (nature’s beauty comes with a splash of caution!). Bring layers—it cools off quickly when the sun sets behind the trees.

Located in Ome City, this temple is famous for its gorgeous azalea gardens.
The vibrant azaleas blooming across the bowl-shaped slopes are currently at their absolute peak.
The early-blooming varieties begin to open in early April, giving you a full month to enjoy the stunning floral displays until the late bloomers peak.
Since it's a bit of a walk from the nearest station, Kabe Station, taking a bus is your best bet if you're arriving by train.
Extra buses are even added to the schedule during the festival period.
Weekends and holidays can get pretty crowded, so I highly recommend going in the morning if you want to take your time exploring ◎
You'll also find souvenir shops and places to grab a bite to eat right on the temple grounds.

Musashi Mitake Shrine Sunrise Festival
Every spring, Musashi Mitake Shrine hosts the unique Hinode Festival, which will be held this year on April 29th. On the eve of the festival, a procession slowly moves forward in the dim light, with soft lanterns illuminating the surroundings and traditional Japanese gagaku music playing melodiously. The procession steadily advances toward the place where the portable shrine is placed. On April 29th, priests, commoners, armored warriors, and children set off from the plaza in front of the cable car station, forming a spectacular procession following the portable shrine. They pass through the streets of Mount Mitake, climb about 300 stone steps, and finally reach the main shrine at the summit, 929 meters above sea level. Here, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Tokyo nightscape, an unforgettable sight. Attending the evening festival also offers a rare chance to appreciate precious night views, experiencing a unique sense of romance and surprise. To visit Musashi Mitake Shrine, you can first arrive at Mitake Station, then walk 25 minutes or take the Mitake Tozan Railway cable car. Come join this distinctive festival and create wonderful memories!

2026 Yabune Kannon Temple Azalea Festival
