If you're taking a drive along the Shimanami Kaido, you absolutely have to stop by! ⁡ Located on Ikuchijima, Belvedere Setoda is an art installation made of a steel double ring and a base, sitting just off a small sandy beach on the island's south side 🎨 ⁡ One of its charms is how the view changes with the ebb and flow of the tide. We definitely recommend riding the ropeway up to the summit. Exploring on foot is also incredible, offering magical, Ghibli-esque views. (You can hike up to the summit without taking the ropeway, too. Since the ropeway skips past Senkoji Temple, walking back down is highly recommended!) 📷 Best Photo Spots The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean, mountains, and Mukaishima. Since the ropeway gets crowded, heading up after it closes at 5:00 PM creates a more mystical, peaceful vibe where you can truly soak in the idyllic scenery. On your way down, you'll run into plenty of cats lounging around. 💡 Pro Tip Onomichi is full of steep slopes and stairs! We strongly suggest wearing comfortable walking sneakers.

The Onomichi shopping street is full of narrow alleys, making it a fantastic hidden gem for photography📸🙆♀️✨️ It's also the perfect spot for a stroll in a kimono👘🥰 My top recommendation in the shopping arcade is the Japanese tea brand, TEA FACTORY GEN (SHOP & CAFE) 🍵 This tea factory is dedicated to natural farming, using zero fertilizers or pesticides, and handles the entire process from cultivation to roasting and selling. They are especially famous for crafting tea from traditional "native" tea leaves, offering unique Japanese teas that capture the terroir and aromas of the Setouchi region.  Located in the Onomichi Hondori Shopping Street, the shop and cafe features a workshop-like vibe where you can sip tea while watching the leaves being roasted and packaged. With a diverse lineup that includes Sencha, Japanese black tea, Hojicha, and flavored teas, you can grab a quick cup to go or sit at the counter for an authentic tea-tasting flight. Their brewing style, which lets you experience the evolving flavors and aromas across three separate infusions, is also a big hit.  Another highlight is their blended teas, which feature local ingredients like Setouchi citrus and fig leaves. You can truly feel the brand's mission to make "Japanese tea more accessible and free." I went to Kosanji Temple, which has been going viral on Instagram. It was an absolutely dazzling temple!! "Kosanji" is a Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji sect temple located on Ikuchijima Island in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and is characterized by its extravagantly gorgeous architecture, earning it the nickname the "Nikko of the West." Built by the prominent businessman Kozo Kosanji as an expression of immense gratitude to his late mother, it is widely known as the "Mother's Temple." Today, it is open to the public as the Kosanji Museum and stands as one of the Seto Inland Sea's premier tourist destinations. The Hill of Hope (Miraishin no Oka): Designed by sculptor Itto Kuetani, this breathtaking white marble garden spans approximately 5,000 square meters. Serving as the starting and ending point for the "Setouchi Shimanami Kaido"—a mecca for cyclists—it demonstrates an incredibly thoughtful "holistic approach." As a rational and pragmatic traveler, I deeply admire how U2 has struck a perfect balance between commercial operation and cultural preservation. It shatters the myth that old warehouses are destined for abandonment, injecting formidable design prowess into Onomichi.

The bustling crowd made it seem like everyone in Onomichi had taken Monday off to gather here. After mingling with the crowd to explore, we returned to our tourist itinerary, passing through a somewhat quiet shopping street to reach the Senkoji Ropeway 🚡. Under the blazing midday sun, we queued for about twenty minutes to ascend to Senkoji Park, where we enjoyed a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea. We then entered Senkoji Temple to light a candle 🕯️ and pray for family peace. Following that, we strolled along the Cat Alley, feeling the sea breeze and listening to the sound of wind chimes 🎐, searching for traces of cats. I must admit, Cat Alley felt like a small, rundown version of Houtong Cat Village, with its art installations appearing somewhat aged and neglected, leaving a slight sense of disappointment. However, looking at postcards depicting cats and the mountain town, I guessed it might just be bad luck 🍀 this time. At the end of our Onomichi journey, we walked along the Seto Inland Sea coastline on what CNN has rated as one of the world's most beautiful cycling 🚲 routes, reaching the destination, Onomichi U2. This is a cafe called "Hantei" in Onomichi, Hiroshima! 📍11-30 Higashido-cho, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, 722-0033 I found this cafe while walking up a hill. I stopped in on a hot day and enjoyed some shaved ice! The menu featured a variety of homemade shaved ice flavored with various syrups! I was instantly able to cool down after eating some delicious shaved ice. Apparently, the seats by the window with the spectacular view are shared, and people have been allowed to take turns enjoying them for a long time. Transportation: Take the train to JR Onomichi Station (Sanyo Main Line), then walk about 15 minutes to take the cable car uphill. Visit Time: June 2024 Onomichi is a small seaside town that might have once been a fishing village, but now it seems to have quite a bit of shipbuilding industry. Since it's not a major tourist hotspot, there aren't many people around. Occasionally, you might spot a few foreigners (noticeably non-Asian), and even the locals are sparse. To reach Senkoji Temple, you first need to pass through Hon-dori Shopping Street after leaving the station to take the cable car. Hon-dori Shopping Street has small alleys branching off on both sides—one side offers views of the railway, while the other side overlooks the port. The street has a somewhat Showa-era vibe, with buildings that are neither too new nor too old, and quite a few mixed-style structures combining Japanese and Western elements. The cable car runs every 15 minutes, with a small cabin. The ride is very short, lasting about three minutes, and it takes you to the cable car station at the top of the hill. From there, you can walk down the mountain along a small path. Along the way, there are signs with poems or verses, seemingly describing the scenery of Onomichi. As you descend, you'll arrive at Senkoji Temple, where you can hear the sound of wind chimes from afar. With the sea breeze and the chime sounds, it feels refreshingly cool. The entire temple is built on the mountainside, blending with the natural rocks at varying heights. One of Senkoji's famous sights is the bell tower "Kyo-on-ro" (Echo Tower), which has been selected by Japan's Ministry of the Environment as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan." However, you can't hear the bell being rung on-site, nor can you ring it yourself. The view from here is excellent, offering a bird's-eye view of the Onomichi Waterway and the distant Onomichi Bridge. The temple sells a wide variety of amulets, as well as numerous types of ema (wooden prayer plaques) and omikuji (fortune slips). There are also many different styles of omikuji to choose from.
