There are some travel routes that make you think, “Yeah, that could be useful.” And then there are routes that make you open your flight app immediately and start checking dates you absolutely did not plan to travel on. 😂 Vietnam and the Philippines are basically begging to be combined into one trip. You can spend a few days eating your way through Vietnam, drinking ridiculously good coffee, wandering around old streets and pretending you are going to have a relaxing vacation… Then suddenly: “Wait. What if we just go to the Philippines?” And honestly? Why not. With Vietnam Airlines serving the Vietnam–Philippines market, Manila and Cebu become seriously tempting additions to a Southeast Asia itinerary. And this is where things get interesting. ⸻ 🇵🇭 FIRST STOP: MANILA Manila gets a lot of mixed opinions from travelers, but I actually think it deserves at least a little time. Not because it is the Philippines’ ultimate beach destination. It isn’t. Manila is where you go for the energy. Intramuros. Local food. Huge shopping malls. Rooftop sunsets. Crazy traffic that somehow becomes part of the experience. 😂 Give it a day or two, then use it as your jumping-off point for the rest of the country. Because once you start looking at where you can go from Manila, things get dangerous for your bank account. Palawan? Cebu? Boracay? Instead of thinking about Vietnam and the Philippines as two completely separate trips, you can start looking at them as one Southeast Asia itinerary. Free snorkeling in the Philippines is one of the best ways to explore the marine world without breaking the bank. This archipelago, with its thousands of islands, is surrounded by vibrant reefs where the water is warm and clear almost year-round. And best of all, you can snorkel almost anywhere for free. All public beaches in the Philippines are open to everyone, and admission is free. The only exceptions are on private hotel property or in protected areas, where swimming is sometimes prohibited for conservation reasons. So, if you pack a mask and snorkel, or even better, fins, in your suitcase, you can snorkel anywhere and as much as you like. I always do this and recommend you do the same. There are no excursions or time commitments; just go ashore and dive. If you didn't buy equipment at home, that's no problem either. Rentals are very affordable on the islands, and there are rental shops on almost every beach. Rough prices are as follows: Mask and snorkel from 100 to 400 pesos per day. Fins from 150 to 300 pesos. A full set rarely costs more than 500 pesos. It's a small amount of money, but the fun is enormous. Fins are optional, but they make life much easier. They help you swim faster, stay afloat effortlessly, and handle light currents more easily. You can dive a little deeper to see the reef in detail. Fins are also comfortable, especially in calm water, but they're simply more enjoyable with them. To protect your feet from sharp corals and rocks, wear special aqua shoes. They're easy to rent or buy locally for next to nothing. They prevent cuts and keep you from slipping on wet rocks. Many locals even wear them all the time. Another important note: never touch corals with your hands or stand on them. Corals are living creatures, not rocks. Even touching them can damage their protective layer, which can cause the reef to become infected or bleach. Plus, you risk getting cuts or getting irritated by polyps. Just enjoy the beauty from a distance and leave everything as is for those who come after you. Now let's explore the best locations where snorkeling is free and accessible from the shore. Moalboal on Cebu Island. Panagami Beach is open and free. The famous Sardine Run begins right from the shore. Millions of silvery fish swirl in a huge vortex underwater. The spectacle is mesmerizing and requires no boat. Dauin on Negros Island. A marine reserve with beautiful corals and turtles. Entry is free; dive right from the sand. The water is clear, the bottom is clearly visible, and there are usually few people. El Nido on Palawan. Many public beaches allow free snorkeling. Near the shore are reefs with vibrant clown anemones and starfish. The water clarity is simply incredible. Anda on Bohol. Quiet white beaches with crystal-clear water and reefs right at the water's edge. Perfect for relaxing snorkeling without the crowds. The Philippines is located in the heart of the Coral Triangle.
