#paphos is a beautiful coastal city on the southwest coast of Cyprus, known for its rich history, stunning beaches, and vibrant Mediterranean atmosphere. According to legend, it is the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite. The city is home to remarkable archaeological treasures, including the Paphos Archaeological Park, famous for its well-preserved Roman mosaics. Combining ancient heritage with modern resorts, scenic harbors, and year-round sunshine, Paphos is one of Cyprus’s most popular destinations for both culture and relaxation. From my point of view, you can spend here between 3 and 5 days. On the rugged coast of western Cyprus lies Tombs of the Kings, a necropolis that does not descend into darkness, but opens upward into sky. At first glance, the name suggests royalty. Yet no kings were ever buried here. Instead, what remains is something more subtle — the memory of a society that once aspired to nobility even in death. Carved directly into solid rock between the 4th century BCE and the Hellenistic period, these tombs were built for high-ranking officials and aristocrats of ancient Paphos, shaped to resemble the homes they inhabited in life. Step inside, and the illusion becomes clear. Doric columns rise not to support roofs, but to frame emptiness. Open courtyards replace enclosed chambers. Staircases descend into quiet stone rooms that feel less like burial spaces and more like architectural memories paused in time. The dead were not sent away from life here. They were placed within it — within courtyards, peristyles, and spatial rhythms borrowed directly from Greek domestic architecture. Sunlight falls freely into the rock-cut chambers, illuminating surfaces worn smooth by centuries of wind, salt, and silence. The Aegean breeze moves through the ruins as if time itself has never fully settled. What makes this place linger in memory is not grandeur, but absence. There are no statues guarding the dead. No elaborate decoration demanding attention. Must-try dishes include octopus stewed in red wine and grilled sea bass, paired with a glass of local Commandaria sweet wine (the world’s oldest known wine, with a history of 5,000 years). 🌊 In the afternoon, visit the Tombs of the Kings, an underground necropolis with exquisite carvings. Some tomb chambers were used as chapels by early Christians. At dusk, stroll through Paphos Archaeological Park, where the Greek myth mosaic floor of the House of Dionysus is a UNESCO World Heritage site. 🎭 Day 2: Kourion Ancient Theater and Troodos 🌞 In the morning, drive 30 minutes to Kourion, a Greek theater perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean from stone steps built 2,000 years ago. Below the theater is the House of Eustolios, with well-preserved mosaic floors. On the way, visit the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, where ancient Romans sought oracles. 🍽️ For lunch, head to Omodos village, a wine village in the Troodos Mountains. The century-old stone houses and alleys are adorned with colorful flower baskets. The Holy Cross Monastery in the village center houses a fragment of the True Cross. The wind is strong enough to blow your hat away. Paphos feels like an entire city turned into a historical site. Walking through it gives you a sense of overlapping time. Day 1 Explored Roman-era mosaics at Paphos Archaeological Park at a leisurely pace. Followed the path leading to the sea and arrived at Paphos Castle, where taking a photo is a must. Day 2 Early morning visit to Aphrodite's Rock. The sea is so transparent that you understand why the goddess is said to have been born here. 🌊 If you go when the sunlight is perfect, every photo turns out amazing. Day 3–4 | Heading to the Mountains, Troodos Leaving the sea behind for a while and heading to the Troodos Mountains, known as the roof of Cyprus. ⛰️ Day 3 Omodos Village feels like a fairytale with every alley. Strolled slowly and enjoyed a glass of Commandaria wine. Thinking, "This is one of the oldest wines in the world," makes it taste even better. 🍷 Day 4 Visited a few hidden Byzantine churches in the mountains and went for a light trek towards a waterfall. Feeling a bit tired, but arriving in Limassol in that state makes the relaxation even sweeter. Day 5–6 | Limassol, True Relaxation Days The real highlight of this trip starts here. Day 5 Complete luxury staycation at a resort like Parklane Luxury Collection. Champagne in the morning, a bite of grilled halloumi cheese. You realize you don’t need to do anything here. 🥂 Day 6 Spent the day gazing at the sea on a private beach. 🩵 There are cats napping around the resort, and you find yourself quietly greeting them. 🐾 Time flies by so quickly. Day 7 | Cat Monastery and Farewell On the last day, visited St. Nicholas Cat Monastery near Limassol. There are more cats than expected, and saying goodbye takes quite a while. Then headed to Larnaca Airport to wrap up the trip. ✈️ Tips from personal experience: · Driving: It’s British-style, so the driver’s seat is on the right. You’ll need to stay alert at first. 🚗 · Cats: There are really a lot of them. If you have allergies, make sure to bring medication. 🐈 · Limassol Resorts: They’re far from the city center, so it’s better to focus on enjoying the resort rather than going out. #churches The first time we attempted to visit this ancient Church there was a religious service in progress so we were not permitted to enter past the door. The Church is a multidenominational where a number of religions use the facilities to undertake the provision of their religious Services. Most of the walls and ceiling are bare stone walls which has a rather cooling effect. On one the walls, cover by glass is the remains of a ancient fresco, it still possible to see the outline of a face. Simple wooden chairs form an aisle along the tiled floor leading up to the main altar. An ornate chandelier adorned with icons hangs, above the altar, from the domed section of the roof. The main altar is a simple table covered with a cloth with a silver crucifix on it. Behind the altar is a wooden reredos, screen, which is adorned with numerous religious images, icons and topped with a large wooden cross. After visiting some massive cathedrals in Europe, the inside of this one is not that spectacular, but the history of the location (specifically Paul's pillar) makes it a must visit. There are some platform walkways around the church, but unfortunately they were closed off The Pillars of St Paul and the tomb and burial place of Erik Ejegod, King of Denmark are nearby.

#100WaysOfTravel 10 min walk from the Paphos harbour is this pretty church which is built upon the ruins of other churches and there are some interesting mosaics outside the church. There is a walkway over the ruins and mosaics with info boards describing what you’re seeing and the phases of construction/destruction but these were closed off so you couldn’t really see anything. StPauls pillar is situated near the entrance gate.

These are all the Paphos beaches that are about relaxing and catching the rays. They all have shower/toilet facilities and you’ll be able to hire a sunbed/umbrella. · Antasia Beach Bar is on the beach and allows you to take your drinks away to your sunbeds (€2.50 each + €2.50 Umbrella). The swimming is protected by large rock banks and is as good as it gets. · Faros Beach (Lighthouse Beach) The beach has very good soft sand throughout and a decent amount of space to be able to set up and accommodate a decent crowd. It has a volleyball pitch, a sand football pitch, sunbeds, shower block, toilet block, cafe with food/drink, lifeguard and well-protected swimming. The facilities are a little outdated but still function completely well · Venus Beach is a large sandy beach with a good amount of space to set up your towel and start your day. The swimming is gorgeous and protected with a large rock bank. The beach has lifeguards and a small hut to buy drinks. The beach also has a decent enough shower and toilet block · Coral Bay Beach This is one of the best-known beaches in Paphos and for good reason. It’s a long stretch of soft sand that can accommodate a decent amount of people and has great swimming. There is a permanent lifeguard, shop, toilet/shower block (€1 to use the shower), 2 restaurants and watersports on the beach, so there is everything you could ask for. There is even a place where you can get an on beach massage.

The Archaeological Park of Kato Pafos (Paphos) is one of the most important archaeological sites in Cyprus. Since 1980, it has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is important to note that Paphos was the capital city of Cyprus between 2nd Century BC and 4th Century AD. The park is extremely huge and the entrance fee (€4.50) is truly worth the money and time! My favourite site is the Villa House of Aion with its marvellous and most detailed mosaics on display, dating from 4th Century BC to the Middle Ages. Paphos was a capital of Cyprus and a very important port. So, Paphos Harbour Castle was built to protect the city and the harbor. But it has a long history. In 1222 year it was destroyed by earthquake. During next centuries it was rebuilt and destroyed several times because of different wars and changes of rules of the island. During those centuries it was a fortress and even a warehouse house for salt. But now it’s an archeological museum, and sometimes it hosts different cultural events. These include: House of Dionysus – this is a preserved ruins of a Roman villa dating to the 2nd, century known for colourful mosaics of Dionysus. It’s not clear whether only romans lived there and is believed wealthy native Greeks also could have inhabited the house. The mosaic floor from the House of Aion is considered one of the most exceptional works of ancient Roman art, if not the only work of its kind. House of Theseus – this exceptionally large villa was the residence of the Roman proconsul or governor, and was divided between rooms for official functions and those for private use. #paphos

#bucketlistreboot Paphos is famous for its rocky coastline with clear water and different natural bays filled with fish. They say nearby is where Aphrodite’s herself landed when she rose from the seas. Paphos Castle Tourists can take a stroll in Paphos’ marina area culminating the 15 min walk at the castle area. Although not an impressive construction, it does offer some great all round photos. You can also swim in the water, as you will see multiple steps so people can go down safely into the sea. Also, if you are lucky enough you can also see turtles. Yes, turtles!

Cyprus, the third largest island country in the Mediterranean, has only three UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites, one of which is the Archaeological Park in the southwest coastal city of Paphos. There are well-preserved ancient Roman ruins, which are as impressive as the famous Greek ruins and attract tourists from all over the world. It takes three to four hours to walk through the park, so please allow more time and prepare enough water. I stayed at the resort from August 6-11 with my 12-year-old grandson and his friend. A family friend also joined us but had her own room. The resort was spotless, and the grounds were stunning, with everything thoughtfully arranged. The food at all the restaurants was excellent, and the ice cream shop was delightful. The beach provided thrilling fun with the waves, the pools were relaxing, and the waterpark was a great addition. However, one disappointment was that the Pink/Foam party was adults-only, unlike other RIU resorts I've visited.

The cedar valley is a separate stop — drive 10 min south, park at the Cedar Valley picnic site, walk the 1 km loop: Sphagnum on the cedar-root flare, Metzgeria on the bark. Mistake: I drove in February — snow on the Troodos road, chained tires needed, rental insurance didn't cover chains, parked at Psilo Dentro and walked 4 km extra each way. March–May or Oct–Nov. Second mistake: I swam in the plunge pool — park sign: "no swimming, protected habitat, €200 fine", a warden saw, €100 on the spot, paid cash. Third: I paid €10 for a "Troodos map" in Platres — the trail is red-dotted, the map was a road atlas, useless. Buy in Pano Platres: a €4 souvla sandwich, not the €18 hotel. Gear: 2 L water, €20 boots, €15 fleece — 1,200 m, 7°C. Local rule: trail free, cedar valley free, no drone near the waterfall (Natura 2000), stay on the red-dot path, the mossy cedar root is not a seat. The moss on the cedar root is the Troodos mist's catch — step on cut timber. Opinion: Caledonia + Cedar Valley is the €0 hike that beats any Paphos beach day, and the mossy laurel grove before the falls is the 20-min half with zero coach-tour crowd.
