At midnight, while the city was still fast asleep, we set off from our hotel in downtown Surabaya toward the Bromo mountainous region. As our car gradually left the city and drove into the mountains, the streetlights faded away, replaced by the rich scent of the forest and a sky full of stars. Upon arriving at the village at the foot of the mountain, we switched to the classic local 4WD jeeps to continue our ascent. This is one of the most iconic experiences of a Bromo trip. Dozens of jeeps moved slowly along the winding mountain roads, their headlights creating a flowing river of light through the pitch-black night—a truly stunning sight. Since it was still early, the temperature on the mountain was only around 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. Coupled with the strong winds, it felt even colder than expected. Along the way, many tea houses were already brightly lit, packed with travelers from all over the world waiting for the sunrise. We followed our guide into a small tea house and ordered a cup of hot coffee to warm up. Holding the piping hot coffee and looking out at the night view of the slumbering Java island in the distance, I suddenly felt that the exhaustion of waking up at midnight was completely worth it. Around 4:30 AM, we arrived at the famous King Kong Hill viewpoint. The sky was just beginning to show a faint glimmer of dawn, and the distant horizon gradually turned a brilliant fiery orange. Put them together under the soft colours of sunrise, and the whole place feels almost unreal. To see Bromo at its best, however, the journey does not begin at sunrise. It begins before Surabaya has gone to sleep. You leave the city before midnight, drive through the darkness, change into a 4WD Jeep and continue along a cold, bumpy mountain road. Then, after hours of travelling, the black sky slowly begins to change colour. That is when you understand why so many people are willing to lose a full night of sleep for Mount Bromo. 📌 Bromo at a Glance · Located in East Java’s Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park · Around three hours or longer from Surabaya · Hotel pickup usually takes place between 11 pm and midnight · Main stops include the sunrise viewpoint, Sea of Sand and Bromo crater · Suitable for beginners, but the cold, dust, stairs and overnight journey can be tiring · Most tours without the waterfall return to Surabaya at around 11 am This is not an 11 hour hike. The total time includes the drive from Surabaya, the Jeep ride, waiting for sunrise, exploring the Sea of Sand and visiting the crater. Surabaya or Malang? If distance is the only concern, Malang is closer. The journey from Malang to Bromo can take around two hours, while travelling from Surabaya usually takes more than three hours, depending on traffic and the pickup location. For the whole trip, though, I find Surabaya more practical. I spent four days in Surabaya, and it never felt like a city that should be treated as a quick transit stop. Flight connections are convenient, there are plenty of affordable hotels, and finding restaurants, cafés and shopping areas is easy. Tunjungan Plaza and the surrounding city centre also give you something to enjoy before or after the Bromo trip. Malang wins on road time. Surabaya wins on convenience. If you are planning flights, accommodation, shopping and Bromo together, Surabaya can be the easier base, as long as you do not mind the longer night drive. 🌙 The Journey Before Sunrise Most Bromo tours collect guests from their Surabaya hotels between 11 pm and midnight. From there, it takes roughly three hours or longer to reach the area near the foot of the mountain. You will then transfer to a 4WD Jeep for the climb towards the sunrise viewpoint. The road is rough, full of bends and very different from a smooth city drive. If you get motion sickness easily, it is worth taking your usual medication beforehand. You may arrive at the viewpoint between 3 am and 4 am, while the surroundings are still completely dark. This is also when the mountain air feels coldest. Bring a proper jacket, gloves and something to cover your head. Warm clothing may be available to rent locally, but having your own is more comfortable. Small stalls around the viewpoint often sell hot noodles, cocoa and snacks, which are especially welcome while waiting in the cold. The sky usually begins changing colour from around 4:30 am, although the exact timing depends on the season. As daylight spreads across the caldera, Bromo, Batok and Semeru slowly appear through the morning mist. One small detail surprises many first time visitors. The perfectly shaped cone in the classic Bromo view is usually Mount Batok. Mount Bromo is the lower volcano beside it, with the wide crater and smoke rising from inside. 🌋 After Sunrise The adventure is not over once the sunrise photos are taken. The Jeep continues down into the Sea of Sand, a wide volcanic plain where colourful 4WD vehicles line up beneath the surrounding mountains. It is one of the most recognisable scenes at Bromo and a great place for Jeep photography. Horses are also available for those who do not want to walk across the entire sandy plain. They can take you closer to the crater, but they cannot carry you all the way to the top. You will still need to climb close to 250 steps to reach the crater rim. The climb is not extremely difficult, but it can feel much harder after travelling all night. Volcanic dust is another challenge, so bring a mask or a scarf to cover your nose and mouth. You may also pass Pura Luhur Poten in the Sea of Sand. This Hindu temple is an important spiritual place for the local Tenggerese community, so it should be treated respectfully even when the surroundings are busy with tourists. 📸 Photography and Drone Services Local photographers and drone operators can often be found around the viewpoint or Sea of Sand. A drone video gives you a completely different view of the volcanic plain, the Jeeps and the mountains from above. Before agreeing to the service, ask about the price, video length, number of clips and how the files will be delivered. Drone availability can depend on the weather, wind conditions and park regulations, and it normally costs extra. For Travellers Who Are Afraid of Heights Being afraid of heights does not mean you have to miss Mount Bromo. Some sunrise viewpoints have steep paths, crowded sections and cliff edges with limited barriers. Stay away from the edge, choose a safer viewing spot and let your guide know that you are uncomfortable with heights. The crater rim may also feel intimidating after climbing the stairs. There is no need to force yourself to continue if you do not feel safe. Although the final flight of stairs can leave you a bit breathless, standing on the rim of the crater watching the continuous plumes of smoke is far more engaging than riding a horse. While horseback riding saves energy, make sure to negotiate the price upfront to avoid any unexpected extra costs on the spot. Saving money is also quite simple. Don't wait until you arrive to find a private charter at the last minute; instead, compare prices for accommodation, transportation, and day tours in advance. For groups, chartering a jeep is usually more cost-effective, while solo travelers can consider carpooling. You don't necessarily have to stay right next to the scenic area; Probolinggo or Cemoro Lawang are both viable options to compare depending on your transportation needs.
