📅 Itinerary Day1:travel vis train from Peterborough to Newcastle. Day2: take part in The Great North Run! 🏨 Nirvana accommodation 🍴 Rudy’s pizza Travelling via train was quick and easy but make sure you reserve a seat when booking. It’s a busy route and you could end up having to stand for 2 hours! Accommodation GNR weekend is expensive, book a room in the Newcastle uni student halls with Nirvana. Not only was it affordable but it’s probably the closest you will get to the start line. Always book a table to eat weeks in advance, everywhere on the Saturday evening from as early as 4pm was heaving and so many people were being turned away!

New car whoop!

We stayed for one night in one of the hotel's signature suites, and the experience was pure delight from start to finish. From the champagne in the room to the commemorative candle celebrating 100 years of the hotel, all these small touches truly made a difference. We dined at the hotel's restaurant, and even with the reduced menu in August, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The carpaccio starter and tartare as the main course were both outstanding. A highlight was the 100-year anniversary cocktail made with gin infused with violet, which paired perfectly with the starter. The staff was attentive and cheerful throughout, making this short stay truly memorable. We will definitely return.

Peterborough

We had a truly wonderful time at the Queensgate Hotel. Traveling with my sisters, we stayed in room 104, which we affectionately named the darling suite. It had three twin beds, reminiscent of Peter Pan! The service was impeccable, with everyone being kind and accommodating. Special thanks to Sam and Janie for their excellent bellman services. We’re already looking forward to returning.

I had an amazing time traveling from London to Peterborough once; the kind staff even gave me a free biscuit! I've taken trips with LNER many times, and every experience has been wonderful. I still fondly remember my first ride on an Azuma and the classic Intercity 225s. Truly a great company!

A weekend of Good feelings

way home to Huntingdon

Great Northern operates trains from London Kings Cross to Peterborough, Cambridge, and Kings Lynn. They also run services from London Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City, Hertford North, and Stevenage (via Hertford). However, these services are set to transition to Transport for London, marking a significant change. Previously managed by GTR, their franchise has ended, and Great British Railways will take over once the necessary legislation is passed. Running numerous trains daily means delays can occasionally occur, often caused by issues like signaling or points problems, or sometimes due to human factors, such as unavailable drivers or disruptive passengers. On the bright side, their trains are well-equipped for disabled passengers and offer reasonably spacious interiors. Most trains feature Wi-Fi, though the Class 379 units inherited from Greater Anglia also have Wi-Fi, which I’ve personally never been able to connect to—not a huge issue. Seating on the trains is decent, and some even have tables, which is a convenient feature.

Great and very warm day

Having traveled with LNER and experienced my share of cancellations and poor service, I feel it's only fair to recognize exceptional support when it's provided. On Saturday, 16 May 2026, we arranged Passenger Assistance for my sister, who has Down syndrome and an intellectual disability, for her journey from Peterborough to Durham. I want to highlight the outstanding help from the Peterborough station team, particularly Glen. We arrived early as instructed, and Glen's introduction set the tone for an exceptional experience. He engaged directly with my sister, asked her name, explained things clearly, and ensured she felt comfortable and included. His treatment stood out—he showed dignity, patience, and respect, addressing her directly rather than speaking around her or to the family. Glen carefully outlined the process, discussed the support available, and ensured she understood her journey. He seated her in the priority area, confirmed she was settled, and radioed ahead with her name and seat number so staff could meet her at her destination. As a family, this level of care eased a tremendous amount of anxiety while empowering my sister to travel with greater independence and confidence. I want to personally thank Glen, the Peterborough station team, and the station manager for their thoughtful, human, and professional approach. This wasn't just good customer service—it made a significant impact on someone for whom travel can be overwhelming. LNER should be proud to have staff like Glen.
