Everyone says going out in August is a waste of money and a nightmare, with beaches packed with people and long queues on the mountains. But surprisingly, in some places, the temperature is several degrees lower than what's posted on social media, and prices remain stable.
It is said that going out in August is to spend money to buy hardships. The seaside is crowded and there are long queues on the mountains. But in a few places, the temperature is several degrees lower than the circle of friends, and prices are still stuck at five years ago. I picked a few personally stepped on the spot, some unpopular to the locals suspect you know the goods, some famous but know how to play people really not many. Don't book your flight in a hurry. Read this before deciding.
01 Zhenjiang | Jiangsu
Jinshan, Jiaoshan and Beigushan are three mountains facing each other across the river. It's just right to walk in one day. We went to Jinshan at 7am, the fog on the river had not yet dissipated, and the temple's morning bell rang, which was much quieter than during the peak period of burning incense. Jiaoshan has to take a ferry over, the boat ticket is included in the ticket, every ten minutes, standing on the deck and blowing the river breeze, more comfortable than the air-conditioned room. Beigu Mountain stays until evening, climbing the stairs to watch the sunset dye the Yangtze River golden, the phrase "where to look at Shenzhou" suddenly became clear. Don't eat at the entrance of the scenic spot at noon. Turn to Daxi Road. The old-fashioned pot lid noodles with meatballs cost ten dollars a bowl. The soup is so fresh that your eyebrows will fall off.
⚠️ Three Mountains joint ticket is cheaper than buying a single ticket, but Beigu Mountain stops entering the park after 5 pm, do not step to the point. Jurong Maoshan is an hour's drive from the city. The temperature inside the mountain is five or six degrees lower than in the city. The hiking canyon is densely shady and the stream flows from your feet. It is suitable for sheltering from the sun in the afternoon.
🚄 Take a taxi from Zhenjiang Station to Jinshan about 15 dollars, direct bus between the three mountains, no need to charter a car.
02 Jingmen | Hubei
Many people have never heard of Jingmen, but obviously the mausoleum is worth a special trip. Hidden in a pine forest, this Ming Dynasty imperial mausoleum is lined with stone statues across the Shinto, and there are so few visitors that they can hear their own footsteps. Go at 3pm, and the sunlight is slanting through the treetops, shining on the mottled stone beasts, with light and shadow higher than any filter. The mausoleum area is large and it takes two hours to complete the journey. Remember to wear comfortable shoes.
🍜 After coming out, find a farmhouse by Mochou Lake. Steamed fish and lotus root strips are what locals can order the most, and you can eat them for 40 dollars per person.
⚠️ Obviously the mausoleum is closed on Monday, don't go there in vain. If you bring the elderly and children, it is recommended to visit the museum in the morning and then enter the mausoleum area in the afternoon to avoid the noon sun. It takes about 30 minutes by taxi from the city to Mingling. There is no direct bus, so driving is the most convenient.
03 Zhuhai | Guangdong
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is indeed fun, but you have to be mentally prepared to go in August – crowded, sunny, and long queues. My advice is to rush the whale shark pavilion when the door opens and take advantage of the large crowds still taking pictures at the door, you are already there to watch whale sharks swim overhead. Tucked into the Penguin Pavilion and Polar Bear Pavilion at the hottest time of 2pm, the air conditioning was cold enough to wear a jacket.
🍜 The restaurants in the park are expensive and ordinary. It's better to bring some dry food and go out at night to eat oyster hot pot near the Hengqin Port. It's the first choice for locals for supper. Couples Road is suitable for evening trips, rent a shared bicycle from Zhuhai fisherman to the sun and moon mussels, the sea breeze blows all the heat of the day.
⚠️ Tickets for Chimelong are several tens of dollars cheaper online one day in advance than on site, but be aware that they are divided into weekday and weekend prices. If you don’t want to crowd the park, there are several free beaches along the couple’s road with few people and clear water, so you can sleep for an afternoon with a picnic mat.
04 Yongzhou|Hunan
The ancient village of Upper Gan Tong was my biggest surprise of the year. The village is tucked among the hills, a river of Shemu flows through its mouth, the stone pavement is polished to the point of shiny, and moss grows in the seams of the walls of the old houses. Arriving before 8am, the whole village was still awake, with only a few old people washing vegetables by the river, smoke wafting from among the tiles. It only takes an hour to complete a lap, but you’ll want to sit and daze for a long time.
🍜 There is a small shop selling blood duck at the entrance of the village. The owner stir-fries it immediately. It's so spicy that I sweat but I can't stop using chopsticks.
⚠️ There are no street lights in the village, it is best to leave before dark. In the afternoon, you can go to the nearby Qianjiadong, where waterfalls and streams are distributed along the trail, and the water splashes on the face, which is suitable for taking off your shoes and stepping on the water.
🚄 Take a taxi from Yongzhou Station for about 40 minutes, it is recommended to charter a car round trip, the return trip is not easy to intercept a taxi.
05 Aksu | Xinjiang
The Mysterious Grand Canyon of the Tianshan Mountains is the kind of photo that does not capture the shocking place. The reddish-brown mountains are eroded by the wind to create layers of patterns. The narrowest part of the canyon is only enough for one person to pass sideways, and the sky is a line of sky. Entering the valley at 10 a.m., the sun shone on the rock wall, the color changing from ocher to orange, like a flame burning. Walk the entire journey in about two hours, the temperature difference between the cool and exposed places is huge, bring a thin jacket.
⚠️ There are no supply points in the canyon, water and dry food must be brought. In the afternoon you can go to the nearby Kizil Thousand Buddha Cave, the murals in the cave are earlier than Dunhuang, and there are so few tourists that you can book a place.
🍜 Return to the county town at night to eat naan pit meat, lamb roasted until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a glass of ice-cold kvass, the fatigue of the day is all eliminated.
🚄 Charter a round trip from Aksu city for about 300 dollars, carpooling is cheaper.
06 Haikou|Hainan
Don't just think of Sanya when you mention Hainan. Summer in Haikou is actually more comfortable. The Wugong Temple is hidden in the city, with towering ancient trees. The lotus flowers in front of the temple are in full bloom. Sitting on the porch and listening to the chirping of crickets is more relieving the heat than blowing the air conditioner. The old street of the arcade is suitable for strolling in the evening. The Nanyang-style arcade glows warmly in the sunset. The old man's tea shop on the street is full of locals. Order a cup of iced lemon red tea and you can sit for an afternoon.
🍜 Spicy soup rice and Hainanese noodles in the old street are standard, a bowl of 10 dollars, sour and spicy appetizer. Crater Park is a half-hour drive from the city, and you can see the entire city coastline along the volcanic rock trail to climb to the commanding heights of the estuary.
⚠️ Crater Park stops selling tickets at 4:30pm, don’t go too late. If you bring children, it is recommended to go to the crater in the morning, return to the old street to avoid the sun in the afternoon, and go to the holiday beach at night to watch the sunset.
07 Yuncheng | Shanxi
The Yuncheng Salt Lake is nicknamed "China's Dead Sea". Visiting in August coincides with the peak of the lake. The lake looks like a huge mirror, reflecting Zhongtiao Mountain, people standing on the shallows, the shadows clear as otherworldly. The light is at its softest after 4pm, and the color of the lake gradients from light green to pink, making it big at a casual shadow.
⚠️ Salt lake has a high concentration of salt water. Don't soak for too long. Remember to rinse with fresh water.
🍜 The Jiezhou lamb dumplings in the city are more bulky than those in Xi'an. The soup is rich and meaty, and served with a clove of raw garlic.
🚄 Take a taxi from Yuncheng North Station to Salt Lake for about 20 minutes. There is a parking lot in the scenic area, which is convenient by car. If you have enough time, you can stop by the Guandi Temple, which is only a half-hour drive from Salt Lake.
08 Qiqihar | Heilongjiang
Zizihar in August has a summer ceiling, the highest temperature during the day is only 26 degrees, and you have to cover yourself with a thin quilt at night. The Zhalong Eco-tourism Area is the home of Danding Crane, which opens at five in the morning, and the crane flocks take off in the reeds, the sound of their wings flapping like the wind passing through the bamboo forest.
⏰ Two performances a day, 9:30 am and 2 pm, do not miss the Dan Ding Crane Flying Show. After watching the show, I walked around the wooden canyon, the lotus flowers and water chestnuts in the wetland were in full bloom, and the air was filled with the fragrance of water plants.
🍜 Back in the city at noon to eat barbecue, Qizihar's barbecue is grilled over charcoal fire, the beef is cut thick, dipped in dry ingredients one bite down, the juice bursts in the mouth.
⚠️ There are many mosquitoes in Zalong Scenic Area, remember to spray mosquito repellent.
🚄 Take a taxi from the city to Zalong about 40 minutes, tickets include sightseeing car, but the last bus at 5:30 pm, do not play too late.
It is said that going out in August is to spend money to buy hardships. The seaside is crowded and there are long queues on the mountains.
