Don’t treat it like an ordinary provincial capital—go straight to the highlights. 🚄 Get off at Changchun station and take a taxi to the Puppet Manchurian Imperial Palace Museum for just a bit more than the starting fare. After 4 PM, the slanting light shines through the old building’s windows, making photos more atmospheric than in the morning. ⚠️ Note that the indoor areas have strong air conditioning, so bring a light layer if you get cold easily. Jingyuetan is better in the morning. Rent a bike and ride around the lake. The forest is 2–3 degrees cooler than the city. For lunch, find a small restaurant near the park entrance. Guobaorou and sweet red bean paste buns are safe bets. In the afternoon, visit Changchun World Sculpture Park. It’s large and quiet, perfect for a slow stroll. I find Changying Century City more family-oriented. If you have kids, spend half a day there. Don’t just visit the palace and leave. The best parts are the lake and plains behind, which require some walking. I suggest taking the mountain loop bus to save energy and see the whole view. Jinshanling Great Wall is a bit far from the city but worth a full day. This section is much wilder and less crowded than Badaling. ⏰ Start climbing at 4 PM. The sunset turns the wall a warm gold. The wind is strong but not dry. From the enemy towers, you can see the mountains rolling like waves. 🍜 In Chengde city, find a place serving buckwheat noodles with stewed beef shank. It’s refreshing. Don’t rush to leave at night. Walk along Wulie River. The cool breeze is much nicer than your hotel room. 5️⃣ Ningde | Fujian Many know Xiapu as a photography paradise, but in August, Ningde’s real value is its coolness and lack of crowds. Taimu Mountain is granite terrain with strong winds and many trees. Climbing it makes you forget it’s 35 degrees below. 🚄 Get off at Ningde station, then take a bus to Taimu Mountain, about an hour. ⚠️ The “One Line Sky” on the mountain is very narrow. If you’re a bit heavy or carrying a big bag, be cautious. I saw a guy stuck for three minutes and had to turn sideways to get past. Baishuijiang is better for families and water lovers. The shallow water plaza in Zhongyang is just ankle-deep, ice-cold and clear. Lying in the water feels like soaking in a natural ice spring. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain, they sell guangbing stuffed with pickled vegetables. Salty, crispy, and fragrant. But I honestly think the neighboring Yuanyangxi (Mandarin Duck Stream) is the real hidden gem! Both are national 5A-rated scenic areas, but Yuanyangxi's popularity is far less than Baishuiyang. It's less crowded, tranquil, and lush with greenery everywhere. If you want to eat and stay, consider this side Qiantou Village Qiantou Village is super close to Longtan, about 1-2 kilometers. I came here specifically for the first picture, but it is indeed still under renovation. I am very much looking forward to the beautiful scenery when it is completed. You can easily visit these three villages in one day, and the return journey will not be too rushed, but it is still recommended to stay overnight to see the ancient village in the morning. Enter Tengwang Pavilion around 4 or 5 pm; the sun shines obliquely on the Gan River, creating a golden shimmer on the surface—far more beautiful than under the midday sun. Each floor inside the pavilion has exhibitions. Don't rush to the top; the second floor, with its models of Tengwang Pavilion from different dynasties, is the most worthwhile, offering a direct view of how the ancients built the pavilion along the riverbank. After reaching the top, don't leave immediately; wait for the river breeze to pick up and the high-rises of Honggutan on the opposite bank to light up—that's when the ticket price is truly worthwhile. 📍 After leaving the pavilion, walk south along the Gan River promenade, passing under the Bayi Bridge, where you can capture a photo of the pavilion alongside the modern bridge. 🍜 For dinner, head straight to Shengjinta Food Street. Enjoy clay pot soup and mixed noodles—a hearty meal for around 30 yuan per person. ⚠️ Summer night tickets and daytime tickets for Tengwang Pavilion are not valid together. You'll need to buy a separate ticket if you want to enter at night, so don't get them mixed up. 🚄 It takes about 15 minutes by taxi from Nanchang Railway Station to the scenic area. It's also a short walk from Wanshou Palace Station on Metro Line 1. 2️⃣ Zhengzhou City|Henan Province In Zhengzhou, the attractions are scattered, so trying to see them all in one day is just asking for trouble. My itinerary was: spend the morning at Shaolin Temple on Mount Song, the afternoon visiting the museum in the city center, and the evening enjoying the breeze at Xiliu Lake. An hour is enough for Shaolin Temple, but the martial arts performances are scheduled, so ask about the showtimes before entering to avoid waiting unnecessarily. The Pagoda Forest is behind the temple; don't miss it, as it's the most historically significant part of the entire scenic area and more interesting than the newly built halls. The museum requires advance reservations and is closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. The museum's most prized possessions are on the second floor; there's always a crowd around the Lotus Crane Square Pot, so arrive early if you want to see it in detail. ⚠️ The museum is free but has visitor limits; book three days in advance during peak season. Xiliu Lake is more suitable for locals to stroll around; it's not worth a special trip for tourists. If you're short on time, skip it and go directly to Zhenwei Water City. Zhenwei Water City is a newly developed antique-style street; it's okay when the lights are on at night, but it's hot and empty during the day, so I don't recommend it. 3️⃣ Yantai City|Shandong The sea in Yantai starts to cool down in late August, making it perfect for spending a long time by the sea. Penglai Pavilion Scenic Area is larger than expected. There's a gentle slope from the entrance to the main pavilion; if you're with elderly people or children, I recommend taking the electric cart to save energy for Tianheng Mountain later. There's a cable car between Tianheng Mountain and Penglai Pavilion, costing around 50 yuan one way. Walking up takes about half an hour, but I recommend walking on a clear day, as the boardwalk offers better sea views. Changdao Island requires a separate boat trip, which takes about 40 minutes. Take seasickness medication beforehand. The most worthwhile sight on the island is Jiuzhang Cliff, where the cliff face is dyed orange-red at sunset, creating a more layered effect than viewing it during the day. 🍜 The sea urchin steamed egg and mackerel dumplings at the local fishermen's restaurants are good, but the prices are about 20% higher than in Penglai city. Only order if you can afford it. Longkou Nanshan focuses on religious culture; if you're not interested in temples, you can skip it and spend your time in Penglai instead. ⚠️ During peak season, ferry tickets to Changdao Island generally stop running after 4 PM, so don't stay out too late and you won't be able to get back. 4️⃣ Jiuquan City | Gansu Summer in Dunhuang is unbearably hot during the day, but from the end of August onwards, the temperature difference between day and night increases, making it more comfortable. Tickets for the Mogao Grottoes must be booked in advance; during peak season, tickets are normally released half a month in advance, and you can't buy them on the spot. It's recommended to watch both films at the Digital Center before entering the grottoes, otherwise you might be confused by the murals. Photography is not allowed inside the grottoes; stick close to the guide, who will point you where the flashlight shines—ten times better than wandering around on your own. The smartest time to visit Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake is after 6 PM. The sand, having been baked in the sun all day, is warm to the touch, not hot. Climb to the top of the sand ridge to watch the sunset, then wait for nightfall. The moment Crescent Lake lights up, the entire desert seems to transform. 🍜 There are vendors selling apricot juice at the scenic area entrance; it's chilled, thirst-quenching, and more affordable than milk tea. Yadan Geological Park and Yumen Pass are on the same route; you can hire a car to visit them in a day, but the journey is long, taking over two hours each way. Fill up your tank before you set off. ⚠️ The sunset at Yadan is breathtaking, but driving back to the city after sunset requires night driving; inexperienced drivers shouldn't attempt it. 5️⃣ Yongzhou City|Hunan Shang Gantang Ancient Village is perfect for those who don't want to rush through tourist attractions and just want a quiet place to relax. The village isn't large; you can walk the main street in an hour. But I found the most comfortable spot to sit by the Xiemu River, watching the villagers wash vegetables, herd ducks, and fetch water—time seemed to slow down. The essence of the ancient village lies in the details: the wood carvings on the gate towers, the moss in the cracks of the stone slabs, and the drainage ditches at the base of the old houses—all relics from hundreds of years ago. There are a few shops in the village selling handmade fermented bean curd and chili sauce; a small jar costs ten yuan and tastes better than those in supermarkets. 🍜 Lunch was at a farmhouse restaurant at the village entrance. It's a bit far from the city center; you'll need to take a taxi or bus. The most worthwhile sights at Lanting are the Goose Pond and the winding stream.
