Chongzuo is beautiful, but I really don't recommend going in September–October. Take my advice and don't force it!!
Chongzuo is beautiful, but I really don't recommend going in September–October❗❗ Take my advice and don't force it!!
Don't be fooled by photos of "Detian Transnational Waterfall, Mingshi Scenic Area (as seen in The Journey of Flower), Taiping Ancient City night lights, Huashan Rock Art, Shuolong Border Street, and the karst landscape along the Hena Expressway." Chongzuo is a patchwork of "Daxin Waterfall + Mingshi Rice Fields + Longzhou Border + Ningming Huashan + Jiangzhou Old Town." Visiting in September–October is a gamble on the weather in the southwestern border region, involving "muggy September rain + swarms of mosquitoes, October National Day crowds and traffic jams at Detian, strict border checks, getting soaked on bamboo rafts, and paying 128 for a Mingshi raft ride that might not even yield good photos."
🚫 Why I advise against going in September–October
1️⃣ September in Chongzuo is "the end of summer + a lottery for rain showers"
Highs in September are 33–35°C, with 80% humidity, making it feel like 40°C.
You might plan for "Detian in the morning, Mingshi bamboo raft at noon, Taiping Ancient City in the evening, and roast suckling pig in Shuolong at night," but in reality, you'll get rain on the Hena Expressway, mist and moss on the Detian boardwalk, mosquito swarms in the Mingshi rice fields, and the ancient city will just look like an ordinary old street at noon.
True, clear mountain views require waiting until mid-to-late October for the rice to turn golden and the rain to stop. In September, you're just paying the "border sauna fee."
2️⃣ Detian Waterfall has high water volume, but it's a triple threat of "muddy water + crowds + reservation system"
Detian's water volume is high through October, and it's powerful, but the Guichun River can be muddy just after the rainy season—it's not the blue-green fairy-tale waterfall you see on social media.
National Day is even more intense: Detian implements "limited capacity, reservations, and off-peak entry." Tickets are released in 4 time slots, and the popular 10:00 AM slot sells out instantly. You can't enter without a reservation. Shuolong Town has one-way traffic, shuttle buses, and temporary parking lots everywhere.
You might think you can "casually view Asia's No. 1 waterfall," but in reality, if you don't enter the park before 8:00 AM, the viewing platforms will be packed, and the mist from the border river bamboo rafts will soak your face—if your phone isn't waterproof, it's toast.
3️⃣ Mingshi Scenic Area is beautiful, but in September–October, it's "bamboo raft traps + getting heatstroke while cycling"
The park itself is walkable, but the bamboo raft tour of the Nine-Bend Bridge costs 110/person, and the Fish Scale Dam route is 135. It only lasts 30–40 minutes, which isn't great value compared to the Yulong River.
Cycling at noon in September is like being roasted, and during the National Day holiday in October, e-bike rental prices jump, and the rice field photo spots are packed with people.
If you're traveling with kids or seniors: wet legs from bamboo rafts, lines for electric carts, and "roast suckling pig + basket feasts" at farmhouses costing 80–150 per person—you'll have no time for photos, and your wallet will be empty first.
4️⃣ Attractions are scattered across counties like beads on a string; without a car, your whole vacation is spent on winding mountain roads
Detian/Mingshi are in Daxin, Huashan is in Ningming, Taiping Ancient City is in Jiangzhou, and Friendship Pass/Puzhai are in Pingxiang, with Longzhou being separate.
Don't imagine you can finish everything by bus from Chongzuo South Station: carpooling costs 80/person, private car hire is 320–360/day, and unlicensed drivers will immediately try to push Vietnamese specialty shops on you.
If it's your first time and you plan "Detian + Mingshi + Huashan + Friendship Pass + Longzhou + Jingxi," you'll be spending 2–3 hours on mountain roads every day. Even motion sickness pills won't save you, and the border scenery will just become "watching others take photos at rest stops."
5️⃣ There are many border rules, and it's easy to get confused if it's your first time
In the Detian, Friendship Pass, Puzhai, and Shuolong areas: keep your ID with you, expect checks at any time, drones are banned, and cross-border bamboo rafts/cooperation zones require separate bookings.
You might be busy taking photos of the "China-Vietnam border," only to find out later: your camera was almost confiscated, bamboo raft tickets must be bought separately, Vietnamese coffee and durian cakes are twice the price in the scenic area, and it's hard to tell if the rosewood trinkets are real.
6️⃣ The "golden rice + clear waterfall + border sunset" you want to see in October don't align
The golden rice waves in Mingshi don't peak until mid-to-late October or early November.
The water quality at Detian slowly clears up after October, but the National Day crowds arrive first.
The boat ride for Huashan Rock Art costs 90, and if it rains, the river surface looks gray, making the thousand-year-old ocher rock paintings look like they're covered in old glass.
You come for the "legendary autumn in southwestern Guangxi," but the result: the rice isn't yellow yet, the water isn't clear yet, and the crowds will drive you crazy.
📅 When is the right time?
✅ October 20 – November 10: Golden rice waves, Detian crowds have left, the Hena Expressway is clear, and cycling in Mingshi isn't a steam bath. This is Chongzuo's hidden golden period.
✅ April–May: Water levels rise, it's not muggy, it's not National Day, the white-headed langurs come down from the mountains, and the river breeze at Huashan is pleasant.
✅ June–August: Detian's water is at its wildest, but it's muggy and prone to thunderstorms—only suitable for those who don't mind sweating.
❌ Early to mid-September: 35°C+ heat, rain showers, and mosquito plagues. Bamboo rafts will get you wet, and you'll get heatstroke.
❌ October 1–7: Detian reservations are impossible to get, one-way traffic control in Shuolong, lines for Mingshi bamboo rafts, and homestay prices triple.
🚨 How to save yourself if you insist on going in September–October
· Don't plan a big loop of "Detian + Mingshi + Huashan + Friendship Pass + Longzhou." Just choose "Chongzuo City + one day at Detian + half a day at Mingshi."
· Book the 8:00 AM slot for Detian 3–5 days in advance via "China Travel Fun Border"; don't wait until you're there. Sit on the left side of the border river bamboo raft; waterproof bags and non-slip shoes are necessities.
· Don't force the bamboo raft at Mingshi; rent an e-bike and ride along the Mingshi River. The light is only good for photos after 5:30 PM.
· Stay in Shuolong/Daxin county town; don't stay in expensive Mingshi mountain villas. Eat on the main street of Shuolong or at the Daxin night market; don't order the "Border Family Feast Basket."
· Choose the 9:00 AM slot for Huashan Rock Art on a sunny day; don't go when it's raining. Only go to Friendship Pass if you love history; if you're just there to check in, you'll find it empty.
· Buy Vietnamese coffee/durian cakes/rosewood items at legitimate shops in Pingxiang or city supermarkets; just shake your head at the scenic area stalls.
· Traveling with kids or seniors: Buy all sightseeing cart tickets, hide indoors at noon (Chongzuo City Museum/Huashan Rock Art Museum), and don't visit 3 major outdoor attractions in a row.
Chongzuo isn't bad; it's just that if you come in September–October, you're gambling on the "autumn tiger" heat, the Guichun River turning yellow, not getting a Detian ticket, getting wet on a Mingshi bamboo raft, traffic jams in Shuolong, fog on the Huashan river, and your driver taking you to shopping traps.
Wait until the end of October, when the golden rice waves carpet the foot of the karst mountains, the water at Detian is clear enough to see the white water lines of Ban Gioc Waterfall, the evening breeze by the Mingshi River makes you not want to get back in the car, and the ladies in Shuolong serve up meat wrapped in piper sarmentosum leaves—that's when "the southern border is ready to gently hand you the wildest waterfalls and the slowest pastoral life." 🦜🍚
