This fantasy like place in Greece is Meteora. The huge rocky towers that have Churches and Monasteries on the top. There are six monasteries that are still in use today; Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanau, Holy Trinity, St. Stephen, and St. Nikolas Anapavsas. It is possible to visit them all but there is an entrance fee of about 3 to 5€ each. It is possible to hike between them through the gorges and paths below the rock towers. This makes for abit more active day and may actually have to split up between two days. The forests are full of birds, the odd escaped goat, and tiny turtles. To get to Meteora the main city is Kalambaka but there are two towns Kastraki or Kalambaba to stay in or eat. Kalambaka is the larger and Kastraki is the quieter. I stayed in Kalamaba at Psammities (great studio apartments with a floor to ceiling window view of the towers. It is a five minute walk into Kalambaka). In Kalambaka I highly recommend, the Meteora Gkertsou Family restaurant. The food was delicious and the service fantastic! Kastraki is smaller but the main plaza is directly under the massive rock towers. I ate dinner at the Taverna Bakaliarakia, which had a festive atmosphere and this made the evening super fun and memorable! Its historic neighbourhoods, rooftop terraces, food markets, museums and hilltop viewpoints make it an excellent destination in its own right. How Many Days Do You Need?🫶🏼 Three full days are enough to see the main attractions without rushing excessively. Four or five days are even better if you want to visit museums, explore residential neighbourhoods or take a day trip to Cape Sounion, Delphi or the Athens Riviera. A practical three-day plan would be:✨ Day one: The Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Dionysiou Areopagitou promenade, Plaka and Anafiotika. After settling in and resting, walk to the Piraeus Archaeological Museum. It houses a vast collection of ancient Greek artifacts, including exquisite sculptures and pottery. It's a must-visit for understanding local history. I recommend spending 2–3 hours here. Day 2: Take a bus to the seaside promenade in the morning. Piraeus is a place that you can’t miss if you are in the city of Athens. It is a huge port, with many large ferry-boats loading and unloading trucks, cars and people. Quite an experience for someone not used to this. most of Athens' visitors simply consider it a transit point to the Aegean islands I recommend to visit this large area by sightseeing bus. I read some reviews that close to the ports could be a little chaotic, many vendors, and poor people. Some people consider is not very safe. Its history is an epic of rebirth from the ruins of war, blending deep history with exquisite art. 📜 Turbulent history: Reborn from the flames of war · Initial construction and destruction: The church was originally built in 1839 (after Greek independence) but was unfortunately completely destroyed on January 11, 1944, during the Allied bombing of the port of Piraeus in World War II. Many citizens seeking refuge inside the church also lost their lives. · Reconstruction and completion: The foundation stone for the current church was laid on June 17, 1956. The inauguration ceremony was held in 1964, and it was fully completed in 1979. 🏛️ Architecture and art: A masterpiece of Byzantine style · Grand scale: The church covers 835 square meters and can accommodate 3,100 people. The Hagia Triada Cathedral in Piraeus is a local landmark and a Greek Orthodox cathedral, as well as the largest church in the area. Its history is quite compelling, blending traces from ancient times to the modern day. I found its exterior very attractive, but unfortunately, it wasn't open for me to enter either of the two times I visited. I'm sharing photos of its exterior and information I've gathered about it. 📜 History: Rebuilding and protection · Initial construction and destruction: The church was first built in 1839 (after Greek independence) but was completely destroyed during the Allied bombing of the port of Piraeus on January 11, 1944. · The current church: Construction began in 1956. During excavation, a large number of ancient artifacts such as vases, gold coins, and mosaics were discovered. The excavated ancient architectural sections were later preserved in the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius within the church for visitors to see. The new church was consecrated in 1964 and finally completed in 1979. ✨ Architectural and artistic features · The church is a Neo-Byzantine structure with an interior area of 835 square meters, capable of accommodating 3,100 people. The massive central dome is supported by eight arches and features 40 windows, allowing the interior icon of Christ Pantocrator to be seen from any angle. · Exquisite interior decoration: The walls are covered with gold-leaf frescoes created by artists such as Stefanos Almaliotis. The iconostasis inside the church is made of marble and wood carvings, and the doors are crafted from forged brass with intricate workmanship. · Unique historical relics: A section of the ruins of the "Long Walls" of Athens is preserved within the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Seeing ancient Greek ruins inside a church is a truly unique experience. 📌 Visiting and location · Address and transportation: The church is located in the center of Piraeus (on V. Georgios and Ethnikis Antistaseos streets), near the Piraeus Municipal Theater, and is within walking distance of the metro station. · Visiting tips: The interior walls of the church are almost entirely covered in frescoes, which are well worth a close look. Please note that opening hours may vary depending on the season or religious ceremonies. There is also a statue of Constantine XI, the last Byzantine emperor, standing next to the church (photo 16), which is also worth seeing.

It’s not only the gateway to the Aegean islands but also a vibrant coastal city with a rich history and a modern vibe. · 🚢 Greek shipping hub: As Europe’s largest passenger port and a key Mediterranean hub, most ferries from Athens to islands like Santorini depart from here. · 🏛️ A sense of history: Plato’s Republic begins with “Yesterday I went to the port of Piraeus.” It was the naval base during Athens’ golden age and still holds remnants like the Themistocles wall. · 🍽️ Local life: Often rushed through by tourists, this area has a strong local atmosphere. You can enjoy seafood at the Mikrolimano fishing harbor, browse the local flea market, or visit the Piraeus Archaeological Museum to see bronze sculptures. 🚇 Practical transport tips: · To and from the city: Take metro line 1 (green line) from Athens directly to the last stop. It takes about 30 minutes and is very convenient. · To the airport: Take bus X96 for about 90 minutes (operates 24 hours) or take the metro (transfer at Monastiraki). · To the Acropolis: In summer, the X80 express bus takes about 35 minutes directly to the Acropolis and Syntagma Square (valid with the 4.1-euro day ticket), ideal for cruise passengers. Piraeus is like Athens’ embrace of the sea. When island hopping, set aside a few hours to soak in its unique atmosphere.

Take the M1 from Thissio to Piraeus. Although most of the route is above ground, this “ancient” metro journey quickly passes through the historical heart and everyday life of Athens, finally arriving by the sea. The entire trip can be divided into three sections: 🏺 First section: Thissio → Monastiraki (through the core of the ancient sites) · Passing through ruins: This part is the highlight. The train runs right beside the ruins of the Ancient Agora, with ancient Greek walls and fragments just outside the window. This “metro running through history” scene is very unique. · Around Thissio: The station area is lively, with not only ancient sites but also modern art spaces like the Herakleidon Museum. 🏙️ Second section: Monastiraki → Omonia (urban life) · “Station museum”: At Monastiraki station, you can notice the remains of an ancient riverbed over 2,000 years old displayed inside the station. This was an unexpected discovery during metro construction. From here northward, the train runs through clusters of buildings. · City glimpse: This route passes through Athens’ bustling old town commercial area. Through the window, you can see dense shops, cafes, and the Acropolis hill faintly visible in the distance. ⚓ Third section: Omonia → Piraeus (heading toward the sea breeze at the port) · Leaving the city: As you get closer to Piraeus, the view outside the window changes from dense buildings to open spaces, with a stronger industrial port atmosphere along the way. · Final stop Piraeus: As one of Europe’s largest passenger ports, you can feel the sea breeze as soon as you exit the station. The port itself has a lively seafood market and a pleasant seaside promenade worth exploring. If you have time, finding a restaurant by the dock to watch the sunset is a very relaxing choice. This line, opened in 1869, is an “antique.” The train makes a distinctive “creaking” sound as it passes, which is part of the experience.

We recently travelled by ferry from #limassol to #piraeus, together with our pets, and I thought it would be useful to share our experience, particularly for anyone considering making the same journey with dogs. 🐾 Travelling with pets #petfriendly The ship has 8 pet-friendly cabins, as well as other accommodation options. There is also a dedicated outdoor pet area, where our lovely pets could enjoy a walk and some fresh air during the long journey. For us, this was particularly important given the duration of the trip. 🛏️ Ship & cabins The ship is somewhat old, and the cabins are fairly basic, providing only the essentials. However, everything served its purpose. More importantly, the crew were extremely polite, friendly and helpful with everything we needed, which made the overall experience much more pleasant. 🍽️ Food & drinks The food at the restaurant was decent, although prices were a little higher than what you would normally expect. There is also a bar serving coffee, sandwiches, refreshments and other basic snacks and drinks, which is convenient during such a long journey. 🧳 Boarding & check-in Boarding itself was straightforward and easy, although the baggage-checking process took some time. One important piece of advice: make sure you have all the necessary documents for both passengers and pets readily available. The check-in and document-control process is taken seriously, so being properly prepared will save you unnecessary stress. 💶 Prices The prices were quite reasonable considering the distance and duration of the journey: · Airplane-style seats start from around €40. · A single-occupancy cabin costs €76. · The charge is €50 per pet. For anyone travelling with a large dog, €50 is considerably cheaper than transporting the dog as “cargo” on an airplane. It also has the advantage that you can travel together and have access to your pet during the journey. ⏱️ Journey time The total duration of our trip from Limassol to Piraeus was approximately 31 hours. It is certainly a long journey, so a cabin makes a big difference in terms of comfort. Overall, the ship itself may not be particularly modern or luxurious, but the experience was well organised, pet-friendly and made much better by the polite and helpful crew. Santorini is very different from other islands in the Aegean Sea—it’s more refined, more spectacular, and indeed the most popular and commercialized Greek island. Its iconic blue and white houses and cliffside sunsets make it a dream travel destination for many. 🌋 Natural wonders and history · Crescent bay and volcano: About 3,600 years ago, a volcanic eruption caused the center to collapse, forming a huge caldera. You can take a boat to the active volcano on Nea Kameni Island and swim in the hot springs. · “Pompeii of the Aegean”: The Akrotiri archaeological site is a Bronze Age city buried under volcanic ash, exceptionally well preserved. 📍 Main towns and activities · Oia: The place to watch sunsets and see blue-domed churches. The scenery is beautiful but crowded. It’s recommended to stay overnight or visit early in the morning to enjoy the quiet. · Fira: The island’s center, with the most convenient transport and nightlife. You can try riding a donkey or take the cable car to and from the old port. · Imerovigli: Known as the “balcony of the Aegean,” it’s the highlight of the cliff hike (about 10 km from Fira to Oia) and quieter than Oia. · Unique beaches: Volcanic activity created distinctive red and black sand beaches, such as Kamari and Perissa. 🍷 Food and fun · Cuisine: The volcanic soil produces unique flavors. Must-try dishes include Santorini fava beans, tomato balls, and the local white wine Assyrtiko. · Wine: With a grape-growing history of over 3,000 years, visiting Santo Wines winery offers both wine tasting and panoramic volcano views. ⚠️ Travel tips · Best season: To avoid crowds, choose May–June or September–October; July–August is the hottest and most crowded. · Transport: The ferry from Piraeus to Santorini takes about 5–7 hours. Athens was just wonderful—this city seriously slaps! Totally can’t wait to come back again one day! 🤩 The Acropolis? Straight-up magical. Wandering around those ancient ruins with the epic view over Athens is honestly next level. 12-day NCL Jade cruise from Athens to Lisbon 🇬🇷➡️🇵🇹 — an incredible experience, especially for the price. I travelled solo, with a cabin under £600, and everything was included — food, drinks, and even $50 daily tour credit.
