This fantasy like place in Greece is Meteora. The huge rocky towers that have Churches and Monasteries on the top. There are six monasteries that are still in use today; Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanau, Holy Trinity, St. Stephen, and St. Nikolas Anapavsas. It is possible to visit them all but there is an entrance fee of about 3 to 5€ each. It is possible to hike between them through the gorges and paths below the rock towers. This makes for abit more active day and may actually have to split up between two days. The forests are full of birds, the odd escaped goat, and tiny turtles. To get to Meteora the main city is Kalambaka but there are two towns Kastraki or Kalambaba to stay in or eat. Kalambaka is the larger and Kastraki is the quieter. I stayed in Kalamaba at Psammities (great studio apartments with a floor to ceiling window view of the towers. It is a five minute walk into Kalambaka). In Kalambaka I highly recommend, the Meteora Gkertsou Family restaurant. The food was delicious and the service fantastic! Kastraki is smaller but the main plaza is directly under the massive rock towers. I ate dinner at the Taverna Bakaliarakia, which had a festive atmosphere and this made the evening super fun and memorable! This main thing is that Meteora is absolutely incredible and unique! #natureoutdoor #greece #meteora #europetrip #myitinerary

I’m really going to cry, sisters 😭 The first morning waking up above the Aegean Sea Opening the window felt like falling into a blue painting That blue isn’t a filter blue; it’s the color mixed by the heavens themselves 🏛️First, how to get to the island (2026 latest update) Flights from Athens to Santorini are operated by Aegean Airlines with 7–8 flights daily Flight time is 45 minutes. I tested sitting on the right window side to see the full volcano crater view Tickets cost about 180–260 euros in peak season, nearly 10% higher than the past two years ⚠️Fuel surcharges have risen sharply. Booking tickets 3 months in advance is the right move If you don’t want to fly, take the Blue Star ferry from Athens Piraeus port High-speed ferry takes 4.5 hours, regular ferry 8 hours. Tickets cost 65–85 euros The deck breeze and sea views on the ferry are incredible, but seasick sisters should be cautious 🚗Island transportation tested Fira bus station is the hub. One-way to Oia costs 2.5 euros with buses every 20 minutes In peak season, the lines can be so long you’ll question life. It took me until day 3 to figure out the pattern 👉The early 7:15 bus is almost empty, and so is the late bus after 9:00 PM Taxi from Fira to Oia costs about 35 euros, surging to 45 euros in peak season If renting a vehicle, island roads are narrow and steep. ATVs are much more practical than cars Daily rental is 45–60 euros plus fuel, but freedom is maximized 🏨Accommodation is the soul of the trip I stayed in a cave suite midway up the Imerovigli cliff It’s away from Fira’s noise but not far from Oia, a perfect golden ratio location Taxi from Fira bus station takes 8 minutes. Walking along the cliff trail takes 20 minutes The whole room is carved into volcanic rock, naturally temperature-controlled without AC The arched ceiling shows original rock textures. Warm lighting at night creates a great atmosphere 🌅The most stunning feature is the private terrace 180-degree unobstructed view facing the volcano crater. You can watch the sunrise from bed at 5:30 AM The Aegean blue layers from deep to light spread out, with the volcanic island silhouette in the distance—breathtaking The terrace has an outdoor bathtub. Soaking in the evening while watching the sunset is a life peak moment The host delivers fresh figs and local Vinsanto sweet wine daily, adding a full sense of ceremony 🥾You must walk the cliff trail Imerovigli → Firostefani → Fira is 2 kilometers total Don’t believe the online claim of 1 hour; with photos and breaks, it takes at least 2.5 hours Along the way, you’ll pass the National Geographic-famous blue-domed church 📸The best photo spot is at the third turn below the church, perfect for overhead shots Start before 8:00 AM. After 9:00 AM, tour groups arrive Bring plenty of water! There are no supply points along the way. Getting dehydrated from the sun is no joke 🌋Volcano island boat tour arranged Departing from Fira old port, the 3-hour short tour includes climbing the volcano and visiting the hot springs The crater still emits heat. The ground is hot to the touch. Wear thick-soled shoes! The hot springs are seawater mixed with geothermal heat, yellowish with a sulfur smell Not spectacular, but since you’re here, experiencing volcanic geology is interesting Tickets cost 25 euros including island admission. Tours run daily at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM 👉Choose the afternoon tour. It has half the crowd and no photo spot fights 🏖️Beach section Kamari black sand beach is the most convenient, with direct bus access. Beach chair sets cost 15 euros The sand is volcanic gravel, rough on feet, but the water is unbelievably clear Red sand beach requires a 15-minute downhill walk, with strong visual impact Red cliffs against turquoise water are stunning, but July afternoons are scorching. Morning visits are recommended White sand beach is only accessible by boat from Athinios port, 15 euros round trip It’s the least crowded and most private, perfect for sisters wanting to relax and daydream 🌇Oia sunset practical guide Don’t squeeze into the castle viewing platform! In 2026, they added crowd control barriers there My secret spot is next to the small church at Oia’s far west end Walk from the main street toward the windmills to the end, then turn right into a downhill alley There’s a semicircular terrace there with views of both the sunset and the blue-domed church 🕐Arrive 1.5 hours before sunset to secure a good spot. In July, sunset is around 8:30 PM Don’t rush after the sunset. Wait 15 minutes for the sky to turn pink and purple That moment is the true highlight 💰Cost reference (tested July 2026) Cave suites on the island average 380–600 euros per night Greece added a climate crisis tax this year, charging an extra 10 euros per night from April to October Meals cost 25–40 euros per person for full meals, about 15 euros for light meals Three days and two nights cost about 1,800–2,500 euros per person (excluding flights) Three times better value than the Maldives but with no compromise on experience 📌Practical tips Tap water on the island is not drinkable. Buy bottled water for 2 euros per large bottle Sunscreen must be SPF 50+ because volcanic rock reflects sunlight, doubling sunburn speed Some cliff trail sections have no guardrails. Wear sneakers, not sandals July is peak season. Book restaurant tables 1 day in advance and sunset spots 3 days ahead Electronic payments are widely accepted in Greece now. Even small shops take cards This summer, put the Aegean Sea into your memories That unreal blue color can’t be captured even one-tenth by photos When you see it with your own eyes, you’ll understand some beauty belongs only to those present 💙

Hi travelers! Athens is one of those cities that can feel chaotic at first but becomes more fascinating with every street you explore. Ancient temples rise above busy neighbourhoods, archaeological ruins appear beside cafés and metro stations, and modern street art exists only a few minutes from monuments that have stood for thousands of years. The Acropolis may be the main reason many travellers come to Athens, but the city deserves more than a rushed stop before travelling to the Greek islands. Its historic neighbourhoods, rooftop terraces, food markets, museums and hilltop viewpoints make it an excellent destination in its own right. How Many Days Do You Need?🫶🏼 Three full days are enough to see the main attractions without rushing excessively. Four or five days are even better if you want to visit museums, explore residential neighbourhoods or take a day trip to Cape Sounion, Delphi or the Athens Riviera. A practical three-day plan would be:✨ Day one: The Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Dionysiou Areopagitou promenade, Plaka and Anafiotika. Day two: Ancient Agora, Monastiraki, Psirri, Syntagma Square, the National Garden and Lycabettus Hill. Day three: The National Archaeological Museum, the Central Market, a less touristy neighbourhood and an evening along the coast. Do not try to combine every major archaeological site in one afternoon. The heat, hills and uneven surfaces make sightseeing more tiring than the distances on the map suggest. Best Time To Visit📆 April, May, late September and October offer a good balance of comfortable weather and manageable crowds. Summer provides long days and a lively atmosphere, but temperatures can become intense, particularly around exposed archaeological sites. During warmer months, visit the Acropolis as early as possible. The official archaeological ticket platform currently lists summer opening hours from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. between April and August, although schedules change throughout the year. Admission uses selected time slots, so book through the official platform and check the current conditions before visiting. My best advice is to divide each day into two parts: explore outdoor attractions early, take a longer lunch or museum break during the hottest hours, and continue sightseeing in the late afternoon. How To Get From Athens Airport To The City Centre✈️ The most convenient public transport option is Metro Line 3, the Blue Line, which connects Athens International Airport with the city centre and continues towards Piraeus. It stops at central locations such as Syntagma and Monastiraki, making it especially useful for travellers staying in the historic centre. The X95 Airport Express bus travels between the airport and Syntagma Square. It operates as part of Athens’ 24-hour airport bus network and is particularly useful when the metro is not operating. The journey normally takes approximately one hour, although traffic can increase the travel time. The current full fare is listed as €5.50 and contactless bank-card payment is available onboard. A taxi or pre-booked transfer is more comfortable when travelling with several suitcases, children or a group. Always use the official taxi rank rather than accepting unsolicited offers inside the terminal. Where To Stay🏠 Plaka is ideal for first-time visitors who want picturesque streets and easy access to historical attractions. It is beautiful and convenient, but some streets can become crowded and restaurant prices are often higher than elsewhere. Monastiraki is excellent for transport connections, nightlife, markets and rooftop views. It is energetic almost all day, so choose a well-insulated hotel if you are sensitive to noise. Koukaki offers one of the best combinations of location and local atmosphere. It is close to the Acropolis and its museum but feels more residential once you move away from the principal promenade. The area is connected to the archaeological zone by the pedestrianised Dionysiou Areopagitou route. Syntagma is practical for airport transport, shopping and reaching different areas by metro. Psirri is a good choice for bars, restaurants and nightlife, while Pangrati suits travellers looking for cafés and a more local neighbourhood atmosphere. Athens’ official visitor guide highlights how differently areas such as Plaka, Koukaki, Monastiraki, Psirri, Kolonaki, Pangrati and Exarchia experience the city. Visiting The Acropolis Without Regretting It ✅ Book your entrance online and select an early time slot. Arrive before the beginning of your slot so you have time to find the correct entrance and pass through any queues. Wear trainers with good grip. The marble surfaces have been polished by centuries of use and can feel surprisingly slippery, even when completely dry. Bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Shade is limited once you reach the upper archaeological area. Do not spend the entire visit looking only at the Parthenon. Turn around frequently to admire the views across Athens, Lycabettus Hill and the surrounding archaeological sites. After descending, walk along Dionysiou Areopagitou and visit the Acropolis Museum. The promenade connects several major monuments and provides one of the most enjoyable pedestrian routes in central Athens. Best Things To Do Beyond The Acropolis🏛️ Walk through Plaka, but leave the busiest shopping streets and look for quieter stairways, neoclassical houses and small churches. Explore Anafiotika, a tiny Cycladic-style area beneath the Acropolis. Its white houses and narrow lanes feel unexpectedly similar to a Greek island village. Be respectful because people still live there, and avoid blocking entrances or photographing residents without permission. Visit the Ancient Agora, where you can understand how public, political and commercial life developed below the Acropolis. Browse the streets around Monastiraki and Psirri, especially in the late afternoon when cafés, restaurants and rooftop terraces become lively. See the changing of the guard outside the Greek Parliament at Syntagma Square, then walk through the National Garden. Climb Lycabettus Hill for a panoramic view of Athens. Sunset is beautiful but crowded, so arrive well before the light begins to change. For a quieter alternative, walk up Philopappou Hill or visit the Pnyx. The wooded hills opposite the Acropolis offer scenic paths and historical viewpoints. Best Photography Spots📸 Areopagus Hill provides one of the closest elevated views of the Acropolis. Visit around sunrise for softer light and fewer people. The rock and steps can be slippery, so wear proper footwear and avoid standing too close to exposed edges. From Philopappou Hill, you can photograph the Acropolis with more surrounding landscape in the frame. The streets of Anafiotika work best early in the morning, before tour groups arrive and while the light remains soft. For a classic city panorama, photograph Athens from Lycabettus Hill shortly before sunset, when the Acropolis begins to glow and the city gradually lights up. Rooftop bars around Monastiraki Square offer some of the easiest night photographs of the illuminated Acropolis. Check the drinks menu and reservation conditions before choosing a venue, as you are often paying partly for the view. A creative tip is to photograph the Acropolis through columns, plants, windows or street openings rather than always placing it in the centre of the image. What To Eat In Athens 🇬🇷 Start with a traditional souvlaki or gyros, but do not limit your food experience to the most famous street dishes. Try moussaka, pastitsio, grilled meats, stuffed vegetables, Greek salad, fried courgettes, saganaki cheese and small plates of meze. For breakfast, look for spanakopita, a spinach pie, or tiropita, a cheese pie, from a local bakery. They are inexpensive, filling and easy to carry while sightseeing. Order loukoumades for dessert: small fried dough balls traditionally served with honey, cinnamon or other toppings. Visit the Varvakios Central Market and the surrounding streets for spices, olives, cheeses, cured meats and a livelier view of everyday Athens. The market is highlighted by the city’s official guide as one of the interesting stops within the historic centre. For better value, eat a few streets away from the busiest parts of Plaka and Monastiraki. The city’s official tourism guide lists dining areas ranging from traditional tavernas and inexpensive local food to vegetarian restaurants, bakeries and seafood venues. Unique Tips Most Visitors Miss 👀 Buy your Acropolis ticket before arriving, but do not automatically purchase every archaeological ticket package offered by third-party sellers. Check which sites are included and whether you realistically have time to visit them. Carry a refillable bottle and use shaded breaks strategically. Athens involves more climbing and exposed walking than many travellers expect. Use the metro for longer distances, but walk between Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma, Psirri and the Acropolis area. Many of the city’s most interesting discoveries appear between the main attractions. Look down when walking through metro stations. Some stations display archaeological remains uncovered during construction. Visit the Acropolis Museum later in the day rather than immediately after the archaeological site. A shaded lunch break between them prevents historical overload and gives your legs time to recover. Plan one dinner without choosing a specific restaurant in advance. Walk through Koukaki, Pangrati or Petralona and select a busy neighbourhood taverna filled with local diners. Spend one evening away from the Acropolis area. Athens becomes more interesting when you experience it as a living city rather than only as an archaeological destination. Things To 🚫 Do not visit the Acropolis at midday during a summer heatwave unless there is no alternative. Avoid wearing flip-flops on archaeological sites. Uneven ground, polished marble and loose stones make them unsuitable. Do not accept friendship bracelets, flowers or unsolicited assistance from strangers around crowded tourist areas. Politely decline and continue walking. Keep phones, wallets and passports secure on busy metro trains and around Monastiraki, Syntagma and major transport stations. Athens is generally considered safe for travellers, but the airport’s official guidance recommends the same standard precautions expected in any large city. Do not assume that every restaurant with an Acropolis view offers good value. Read the menu before sitting down and check whether bread, water or small dishes are charged separately. Avoid relying entirely on taxis during rush hour. The metro is often faster for journeys through the central area. Do not photograph military or security personnel closely without permission, and remain respectful during the changing of the guard. Final information ✨ Athens is not a perfectly polished city, and that is part of what makes it memorable. It is noisy, energetic, historic, creative and full of contrasts. One moment you are standing beside an ancient temple, and the next you are drinking coffee on a street covered in contemporary murals. The city is best experienced slowly. Wake up early for the archaeological sites, spend time in neighbourhood cafés, climb a hill before sunset and allow yourself to wander without following the fastest route on your phone. Come for the Acropolis, but stay for the food, neighbourhoods, street life and panoramic views. Athens becomes far more rewarding once you stop treating it as a gateway to the islands and start exploring it as one of Europe’s most distinctive capitals. #couplestrip #athens #travel2026

Hey everyone, I recently ventured to Greece and discovered an incredibly niche yet breathtakingly beautiful place—Piraeus! It's a true underrated gem in the European travel landscape, and I can't let anyone miss out on it! 🗺️Itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Piraeus in the morning, take a taxi to the hotel upon arrival, and check in. After settling in and resting, walk to the Piraeus Archaeological Museum. It houses a vast collection of ancient Greek artifacts, including exquisite sculptures and pottery. It's a must-visit for understanding local history. I recommend spending 2–3 hours here. Day 2: Take a bus to the seaside promenade in the morning. Stroll along the coastline, enjoy the sea breeze, and watch the passing ships. It's incredibly relaxing. Spend about 2 hours here. In the afternoon, visit the Temple of Zeus. Although only ruins remain of this ancient structure, you can still sense its former glory. Spend 1–2 hours exploring. Day 3: Rent a scooter and head to the Temple of Poseidon. The scenery along the way is stunning. The temple stands majestically on a cliff overlooking the sea, a truly awe-inspiring sight. Spend 2–3 hours here. 🌟Highlights The sunset at the Temple of Poseidon is absolutely incredible! The setting sun paints the sky in shades of orange and red, casting a warm glow on the temple's stone columns, which contrast beautifully with the deep blue sea. Every photo you take will be a masterpiece. The experience is truly breathtaking and something you have to see for yourself. 🍱Food Recommendations I highly recommend "Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani," located near the port. Their Greek mixed grill platter is a must-try. The lamb and chicken are grilled to perfection, with a crispy exterior and tender interior. Paired with their unique sauces, each bite is incredibly satisfying and bursting with Mediterranean flavors. 🏨Accommodation Experience I stayed at the "Porto Biondo Hotel," which has an excellent location. It's just a short walk from the subway station, making it super convenient for getting around. The rooms are cozy and comfortable, spotlessly clean, and the bedding is incredibly soft. The front desk staff are also very helpful with planning itineraries. It offers great value for money. ⚠️Important Notes It's best to purchase tickets to the Temple of Poseidon in advance on the official website, as the lines can be long and time-consuming. The weather here can be unpredictable, with sunny days being quite hot, so be sure to bring sunscreen. However, it can get a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings, so pack a warm jacket as well. Piraeus is truly full of surprises, from historical sites and stunning seascapes to delicious cuisine. Every aspect is unforgettable. I'm sure you'll be captivated by its charm. Add it to your travel list and start planning your trip!

Day 3: Spend the day at Piraeus Port, watching the ships come and go, and relaxing at a café. The sunset over the port in the evening is stunning. Take a stroll along the beach at night. 🌟Highlights The artifacts at the Piraeus Archaeological Museum are truly impressive. The ancient Greek sculptures are lifelike, each bearing a rich history, as if transporting you back in time to converse with the ancients. Aegina Island is like a real-life fairytale world, with charming blue-roofed, white-walled buildings. From a high vantage point, the entire island, surrounded by the sea, looks like a beautiful painting. Piraeus Port is bustling with activity, with ships constantly coming and going. The setting sun casts a golden glow on the shimmering sea, creating a magical atmosphere. 🍱Food Recommendations I highly recommend Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani, located at Evripidou 12, Piraeus. Their mixed grill platter is a must-try. The tender and juicy lamb and chicken, seasoned with unique Greek spices, offer a burst of Mediterranean flavor in every bite. It's simply divine! Also, try the Greek-style fried small fish, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. A squeeze of lemon juice adds a refreshing touch. 🏠Accommodation Experience I stayed at Piraeus Port Hotel. Its location is fantastic, right near the port, with ocean views right outside the door. The hotel is clean and tidy, with cozy rooms and comfortable bedding. The front desk staff is warm and welcoming, offering assistance with booking ferry tickets and recommending attractions. It's excellent value for money. ⚠️Things to Note Ferry tickets to Aegina Island can be booked online in advance. Buying tickets on-site during peak season may cause delays. The summer sun in Piraeus is intense, so be sure to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Some restaurants charge a seating fee, so check when ordering. Piraeus is truly a place full of surprises, with history, beautiful scenery, and delicious food. Every corner is memorable. I'm sure you'll fall in love with it too. Piraeus is a place that you can’t miss if you are in the city of Athens. It is a huge port, with many large ferry-boats loading and unloading trucks, cars and people. Quite an experience for someone not used to this. most of Athens' visitors simply consider it a transit point to the Aegean islands I recommend to visit this large area by sightseeing bus. I read some reviews that close to the ports could be a little chaotic, many vendors, and poor people. Some people consider is not very safe. From the sightseeing bus you get to enjoy nice views with comfort. #createwithtrip #piraeus #greece #athens

The Acropolis was not built all at once, and its history spans thousands of years. The iconic complex we see today was primarily rebuilt during the "Periclean Age" in the 5th century BC using high-quality marble from Mount Pentelicus. 📅 When it was built: Construction spanning millennia The construction history of the Acropolis can be divided into several key stages: · Prehistoric and early periods: There are traces of human activity on the Acropolis hill as early as 4000 BC. In the 13th century BC, the Mycenaeans built a palace and defensive "Cyclopean walls" here. · Archaic period (religious transformation): Starting from the 6th century BC, the Acropolis gradually transformed into a religious sanctuary dedicated to Athena, with early temples built. However, these structures were destroyed during the Persian invasion in 480 BC. · Classical period (Golden Age): In 447 BC, under the leadership of the statesman Pericles, large-scale reconstruction began. The core structure, the Parthenon, was largely completed by 438 BC, and the construction of the entire Acropolis complex lasted about 40 years, until around 406 BC. · Subsequent periods: Over the next nearly two thousand years, the Acropolis went through the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, was converted into churches, mosques, and more, and suffered repeated damage. 🏗️ How it was built: Precision engineering without mortar The construction of the Acropolis demonstrates the ancient Greeks' superb engineering and geometric wisdom: · Precision interlocking: The buildings do not use cement mortar, relying entirely on precise cutting and interlocking of the stones to maintain stability. The gaps between some stones are extremely small, with astonishing precision. · Metal reinforcement: The stones were connected and secured using I-shaped iron bars and slots, forming a sturdy structure similar to a "3D puzzle." · Geometry and manpower: The construction process did not have construction drawings in the modern sense but was based on the laws of geometry. Transportation and hoisting relied on ropes, pulleys, and a large amount of manpower; for example, the powerful Athenian navy at the time also contributed its skilled rope-handling techniques. 🪨 Where the stone came from: Nearby Mount Pentelicus The main source of stone for the Acropolis is very clear: · Main stone (marble): The main structures, including the columns and walls of the Parthenon, are almost entirely made of white marble from Mount Pentelicus. The quarry is located about 16–20 km northeast of Athens, and about 180,000 tons of marble were mined for the construction of the Acropolis. · Auxiliary stone (limestone): In addition to marble, some foundations and earlier defensive walls of the Acropolis also used locally quarried limestone, such as limestone from the Piraeus region. · Transportation method: The huge stones quarried from Mount Pentelicus were roughly hewn into blanks, then hauled by large carts, and finally hoisted onto the Acropolis hill using a pulley system. The final fine processing was completed on the Acropolis construction site.

The layout of Piraeus Port is a bit unique. The large cruise ship terminals and the terminals for smaller boats/ferries are not in the same area. The metro and train stations are located closer to the latter, so the walking distance varies significantly depending on which terminal you need to reach. 🗺️ Port layout overview Piraeus Port is mainly divided into several areas. The ones most relevant to travelers are the Central Port (Kentrikó Limani) and the cruise terminal area. The Central Port mainly serves ferries, hydrofoils, and catamarans heading to the Greek islands, while the cruise terminal area is dedicated to large cruise ships and is located further south/west on the periphery of the port. 🚢 Large cruise terminals (Terminal A / B / C) Large cruise ships mainly dock at the three cruise terminals: A, B, and C. They are spread out along a coastline of about 2.8 km, with some distance between them. · Terminal A (Miaoulis): Located near the center of the port and closest to Piraeus city center, it mainly serves small and medium-sized cruise ships. It is the closest of the three terminals to the metro station. · Terminal B (Themistocles): Located at the west end of the port, it is the furthest from the city center and public transport facilities. It is dedicated to large or ultra-large cruise ships (such as mega-ships with a capacity of 4,500+ passengers). It is the furthest to walk to from the metro station. · Terminal C (Alkimos): Relatively closer to public transport, it mainly serves embarkation and disembarkation for some cruise ships. 📍 Area E: Boarding for catamarans to Fira, Santorini Area E is located in the center of the port and mainly serves ferries to various Greek islands. The metro and train stations are located right next to gates E5/E6. Once you exit the metro station, you are essentially already in the Area E zone. 🚶 Distance from the station to the gates in Area E · Gates E5 / E6: Right outside the station, 0–2 minutes. Blue Star ferries to the Cyclades islands usually dock here. · Gate E7: About a 5-minute walk. High-speed boats like Seajets often use this gate. · Gates E8 / E9: About a 10–12 minute walk. For routes to the Saronic Islands or some Cyclades routes. · Gates E10–E12: About a 15–20 minute walk. Parts of E11/E12 are used for cruise ship docking. 💡 Practical tips If you are going to Area E, taking the metro or train to Piraeus station is the most convenient option, as the entrance to Area E is right outside the station. However, please be sure to confirm exactly which gate your boat docks at, as there is still some walking distance between the gates within Area E, and it can be inconvenient to drag luggage if you go to the wrong gate. Distance from the metro/train station to the cruise terminals: The Piraeus metro station (terminus of lines M1/M3) and the train station (Piraeus Railway Station) are adjacent and can basically be considered the same transport hub. If you are taking a high-speed catamaran to Santorini (usually E7/E8), you can walk to the cruise terminal from Piraeus metro or train station.

The Holy Temple of Saint Spyridon is the patron saint church of Piraeus, Greece, and the city's oldest religious site. It is located at 1 Akti Miaouli, in the heart of the port area. History This church embodies the deep religious heritage of Piraeus: · A thousand-year legacy: The current site was originally built in the 11th to 12th centuries as a fortified monastery called "Saint Spyridon Monastery," designed to defend against pirate attacks. · Political significance: In 1835, the first municipal authorities of Piraeus were sworn in here. · Existing structure: The current church was built between 1868 and 1897 and is the third building on this site. Why it is significant Saint Spyridon is revered as the patron saint of Piraeus, and its status stems not from the scale of the building, but from its historical roots. During the centuries when Piraeus was abandoned, the Saint Spyridon Monastery was the only building in the area, and thus it was regarded as the city's symbol of protection. Visitor information · Address: 1 Akti Miaouli, 185 35 Piraeus, Greece. · Opening hours: Typically 6:30 AM – 9:30 PM. · Visitor tips: The interior of the church is known for its exquisite paintings and peaceful atmosphere. (Unfortunately, it was not open when I visited.) Saint Spyridon (c. 270–348) was a saint from Cyprus who started as a shepherd. Known as the "Wonderworker," his life was legendary, and he is also called the "Walking Saint."

Athens feels like a living story, where ancient stones meet the rhythm of modern life. Walk beneath the Acropolis and stand before the magnificent Parthenon, then wander through Plaka’s charming streets filled with cafés, colours, and little discoveries. Explore Monastiraki’s lively markets, admire the views from Lycabettus Hill, and watch the sunset paint the city in golden light. Athens is more than its ancient ruins—it is the warmth of its people, the aroma of Greek food, the sound of church bells, and the endless blue sky above. Every corner carries a piece of history, making Athens a city that stays in your heart long after you leave.

Viewing these 3 islands from the sea is like reading a Cycladic storybook with 3 distinct personalities: Syros is the elegant lady, Tinos is the devout artist, and Mykonos is the host of an endless party. 🚢 3 islands from the sea: Aegean gems with distinct personalities Syros: The lady of the Aegean, photos 1–6 · First glimpse from the sea: As you approach, the neoclassical architecture of Ermoupoli port catches your eye first. Grand mansions and theaters (like the mini La Scala opera house) spread along the hillside, offering a unique vibe among the Cyclades. · Core appeal: As the administrative and cultural center of the archipelago, it is known as the lady. It offers an authentic atmosphere, quality restaurants, and laid-back beaches, making it quieter and more affordable than Mykonos. · Recommended experiences: Sip coffee in the square of Ermoupoli, visit the Industrial Museum, or enjoy the wine-green shallow waters at Galissas Beach on the west coast. Tinos: A stone epic of wind and faith, photos 7–14 · First glimpse from the sea: As the ship nears the port, you can see the striking Church of the Annunciation on the hillside. The Volax boulder field in the island's interior resembles the surface of the moon and is visually stunning. · Core appeal: This is Greece's most important Orthodox pilgrimage site and the home of marble carving. It is quiet and traditional, featuring over 60 white stone villages and excellent local cuisine (such as froutalia omelet). · Recommended experiences: Hike through the boulder villages, visit the Museum of Marble Crafts, or explore quiet beaches along ancient trails. Mykonos: The white party of the Mediterranean, photos 15–20 · First glimpse from the sea: The most iconic sight—the Kato Mili windmills lined up on the hillside and the colorful houses of Little Venice right by the waves—will catch your eye as the ship approaches. · Core appeal: It is synonymous with luxury and nightlife. A labyrinth of crisscrossing white alleys, boutiques, beach clubs, and a world-class party atmosphere attract stylish crowds from around the globe. · Recommended experiences: Watch the sunset in Little Venice, visit the Church of Panagia Paraportiani (composed of 4 small churches), or experience the vibrant beach culture at Paradise Beach. 💡 Planning an Aegean island-hopping trip? These 3 islands are located close to each other. The Syros > Tinos > Mykonos route is very convenient, with most inter-island ferries taking only 30–45 minutes. · Suggested pace: A classic itinerary is 7–8 days, with 2 nights each in Syros and Tinos, and 2–3 nights in Mykonos. This allows you to experience the culture while also enjoying the beaches and nightlife. · Booking reminder: Summer (July–August) is peak season, so we recommend booking your ferry tickets 2–4 weeks in advance.

Hiking up Athens' Lycabettus Hill, the scenery along the way truly blends natural wildness with an epic urban feel in a very special way. 🌵 Scenery along the way: Cacti and wildness The hiking route starting from the Kolonaki neighborhood takes about 30–40 minutes. The path winds through pine forests first, then shrubbery. · Vegetation: You will see many cacti, aloe, and agave along the way. This is a unique feature of hiking in a Mediterranean climate. · Friendly reminder: While cactus fruit looks tempting, be extra careful if picking it in the wild. The skin has tiny thorns that can easily prick your hands if not handled properly. Also, it is best not to damage the natural vegetation. 🏛️ Athens city center and the Acropolis: A sea of white and golden ruins As you gain altitude, the view gradually opens up. The iconic sea of white/grayish-yellow buildings in Athens spreads out before you like an ocean. · Overlooking the Acropolis: Lycabettus Hill is 277 meters high, about 120 meters higher than the Acropolis, offering a unique bird's-eye view of the entire Acropolis and the Parthenon. · Sunset: If you arrive in the evening, you can see the sunset cast a golden glow over the entire city and the distant Acropolis, which is truly breathtaking. 🌊 Views of the Aegean Sea: Ports and bays On a clear day, you can see the deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the Saronic Gulf from the summit or open viewpoints along the way. You can also clearly make out the silhouette of the Port of Piraeus, Greece's largest port and a vital shipping hub in the eastern Mediterranean, adding a touch of modern maritime civilization to this ancient city's landscape.

The beauty of Piraeus carries the saltiness of the Mediterranean breeze and the depth of a thousand years of history. It is not just a port to pass through in a hurry, but a maritime history book worth stopping to read. 🚢 The two sides of the port: From a busy hub to a romantic fishing port The port of Piraeus is the largest port in Greece and one of the largest passenger ports in Europe. Its charm is divided into two distinct sides: · The raw charm of the main port: As a busy hub connecting Athens and the Aegean islands, giant cruise ships, cargo ships, and fishing boats shuttle back and forth here. Standing by the pier, watching ships come and go and containers stacked like building blocks, you can feel the working pulse of a living port. · The romantic leisure of the twin bays: Bypassing the main port, the Mikrolimano and Pasalimani bays located to the south are a completely different scene. They are filled with yachts and colorful fishing boats. Taking a walk along the horseshoe-shaped waterfront promenade and finding a seafood restaurant to sit down in is the best way to experience the locals' slow-paced life. 🏛️ More than just a transit station: The interweaving of history and life · The starting point of philosophy: This is not only a geographical hub but also the origin of thought. The first sentence of Plato's Republic is: "I went down to the Piraeus yesterday." Standing here, you will feel like you are transcending time and space with the ancient Greek philosophers. · A museum not to be missed: If time permits, I highly recommend the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus. Although the collection is not large, it houses the museum's treasure—the 6th-century BC bronze statue Piraeus Kouros, which is one of the oldest life-sized hollow bronze statues in existence in the world. · Authentic local atmosphere: This is not a theme park built for tourists. Strolling through the Friday farmers' market (Laiki Agora) or the indoor municipal market, and picking olives and buying spices with the locals, is the most authentic experience. 🍽️ A taste of the port: From fishing boat to table The core of a port city is, of course, seafood. Here, seafood restaurants and fishing boats coexist on the same coastline, focusing on the directness of eating what the sea provides. · Michelin standard: Varoulko Seaside is a well-known creative seafood restaurant. The chef elevates Greek seafood to a high level, earning a Michelin Plate recommendation. If you want to dine in style, this is a great choice. · Fisherman's canteen: Restaurants like Jimy's Fish are more down-to-earth. The preparation is simple, using only olive oil and lemon for seasoning, allowing you to taste the original flavor of the day's catch. 📌 Travel tips · Transportation: Take Metro Line 1 (Green Line) from Athens city center directly to the terminal station, which takes about 30 minutes. · Time: It is recommended to go in the afternoon or evening. The light in the afternoon is good for taking photos, and watching a sunset at Mikrolimano is a classic experience.

Holy Trinity Cathedral (Agia Triada) is the largest and most important Greek Orthodox church in Piraeus and serves as the cathedral for the city's diocese. Its history is an epic of rebirth from the ruins of war, blending deep history with exquisite art. 📜 Turbulent history: Reborn from the flames of war · Initial construction and destruction: The church was originally built in 1839 (after Greek independence) but was unfortunately completely destroyed on January 11, 1944, during the Allied bombing of the port of Piraeus in World War II. Many citizens seeking refuge inside the church also lost their lives. · Reconstruction and completion: The foundation stone for the current church was laid on June 17, 1956. The inauguration ceremony was held in 1964, and it was fully completed in 1979. 🏛️ Architecture and art: A masterpiece of Byzantine style · Grand scale: The church covers 835 square meters and can accommodate 3,100 people. It is a three-aisled church with the nave dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the right wing to the Apostles Peter and Paul, and the left wing to Saint Spyridon. · Stunning dome and frescoes: The massive dome is supported by 8 arches and features 40 windows, providing excellent natural light that allows the "Christ Pantocrator" fresco on the dome to be seen from every corner. The interior gold mosaic frescoes blend Macedonian and Cretan styles and were completed by painter Stephanos Almaliotis and his students. · Precious relics: Inside the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius, a section of the ruins of the "Long Walls" of Athens is preserved, adding a sense of historical depth. 📌 Practical information and highlights · Location and surroundings: The church is located at 2 Ethnikis Antistaseos in the center of Piraeus. It is right next to the Piraeus Municipal Theatre and is guarded by naval and army honor guards. · Exterior highlights: Don't forget to see the statue of Constantine XI, the last Byzantine emperor, in the church courtyard (photo 6), as well as the exquisite bronze doors and the carved marble iconostasis. · Visit tips: As this is an Orthodox church, please dress modestly when visiting. If you want to avoid the crowds, it is recommended to visit on a weekday. If you are in Piraeus, this church is definitely worth spending some time to explore. I visited twice, but unfortunately, I didn't catch it when it was open for visitors. Even so, its majestic exterior is worth a visit to appreciate its historical significance.

🇬🇷 Naxos, Greece — Complete Travel Guide Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades and one of Greece’s best destinations for a mix of beautiful beaches, traditional villages, ancient ruins, Greek food, mountains, and relaxed island life. Compared with Santorini and Mykonos, Naxos is generally more laid-back and often better value. 🌊 Must-See Places 1. Portara of Naxos The island’s iconic landmark—a huge marble gateway from an unfinished ancient temple of Apollo. It’s especially beautiful at sunset. 2. Naxos Town (Chora) Explore the whitewashed streets, Venetian Old Town, castle area, small shops, cafés, and waterfront promenade. 3. Agios Prokopios Beach 🏖️ One of Naxos’s most famous beaches, with clear turquoise water and plenty of restaurants and beach facilities. 4. Agia Anna Beach A smaller, picturesque beach with golden sand, clear water, and a relaxed atmosphere. 5. Plaka Beach Long, wide, sandy and comparatively peaceful. Great for spending an entire afternoon by the sea. 6. Halki Village A charming inland village surrounded by olive groves, traditional houses, cafés and local food producers. 7. Apeiranthos A beautiful mountain village famous for its marble-paved streets and traditional Cycladic architecture. 8. Temple of Demeter An impressive ancient marble temple dating to the 6th century BC, located near Sangri. 🏔️ What makes Naxos special? Naxos isn’t just about beaches. The island has Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades, fertile agricultural land, olive groves, mountain villages and a strong local food culture. 🍽️ What to Eat Try local Naxian specialties such as: · Naxos potatoes 🥔 · Graviera Naxou cheese · Local goat and lamb dishes · Fresh seafood · Greek salad · Loukoumades (Greek doughnuts) · Local citrus liqueur, Kitron 🚢 How to Get There The easiest route is usually Athens → Naxos. · ✈️ Flight: Athens to Naxos takes roughly 40–45 minutes. · ⛴️ Ferry: Ferries from Athens/Piraeus take approximately 3.5–6+ hours, depending on the vessel. You can also reach Naxos by ferry from islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Milos. ☀️ Best Time to Visit May–June: Warm weather, fewer crowds and beautiful beaches. July–August: Peak summer, hottest and busiest. September: ⭐ Excellent—warm sea, pleasant weather and generally fewer crowds. October: Quieter and cooler, but some seasonal businesses begin closing. 💰 Budget Naxos can be considerably more affordable than Santorini or Mykonos, especially if you stay outside the busiest beachfront areas. Renting a car or scooter can be useful if you want to explore the villages and remote beaches. Ideal stay: 3–5 days for the main highlights; 5–7 days if you want a slower beach-and-village holiday. Best combination: Naxos + Paros + Santorini makes a fantastic Cyclades island-hopping itinerary.

The Hagia Triada Cathedral in Piraeus is a local landmark and a Greek Orthodox cathedral, as well as the largest church in the area. Its history is quite compelling, blending traces from ancient times to the modern day. I found its exterior very attractive, but unfortunately, it wasn't open for me to enter either of the two times I visited. I'm sharing photos of its exterior and information I've gathered about it. 📜 History: Rebuilding and protection · Initial construction and destruction: The church was first built in 1839 (after Greek independence) but was completely destroyed during the Allied bombing of the port of Piraeus on January 11, 1944. · The current church: Construction began in 1956. During excavation, a large number of ancient artifacts such as vases, gold coins, and mosaics were discovered. The excavated ancient architectural sections were later preserved in the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius within the church for visitors to see. The new church was consecrated in 1964 and finally completed in 1979. ✨ Architectural and artistic features · The church is a Neo-Byzantine structure with an interior area of 835 square meters, capable of accommodating 3,100 people. The massive central dome is supported by eight arches and features 40 windows, allowing the interior icon of Christ Pantocrator to be seen from any angle. · Exquisite interior decoration: The walls are covered with gold-leaf frescoes created by artists such as Stefanos Almaliotis. The iconostasis inside the church is made of marble and wood carvings, and the doors are crafted from forged brass with intricate workmanship. · Unique historical relics: A section of the ruins of the "Long Walls" of Athens is preserved within the Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Seeing ancient Greek ruins inside a church is a truly unique experience. 📌 Visiting and location · Address and transportation: The church is located in the center of Piraeus (on V. Georgios and Ethnikis Antistaseos streets), near the Piraeus Municipal Theater, and is within walking distance of the metro station. · Visiting tips: The interior walls of the church are almost entirely covered in frescoes, which are well worth a close look. Please note that opening hours may vary depending on the season or religious ceremonies. There is also a statue of Constantine XI, the last Byzantine emperor, standing next to the church (photo 16), which is also worth seeing.

Piraeus is the outer port of Athens and the largest port in Greece. It’s not only the gateway to the Aegean islands but also a vibrant coastal city with a rich history and a modern vibe. · 🚢 Greek shipping hub: As Europe’s largest passenger port and a key Mediterranean hub, most ferries from Athens to islands like Santorini depart from here. · 🏛️ A sense of history: Plato’s Republic begins with “Yesterday I went to the port of Piraeus.” It was the naval base during Athens’ golden age and still holds remnants like the Themistocles wall. · 🍽️ Local life: Often rushed through by tourists, this area has a strong local atmosphere. You can enjoy seafood at the Mikrolimano fishing harbor, browse the local flea market, or visit the Piraeus Archaeological Museum to see bronze sculptures. 🚇 Practical transport tips: · To and from the city: Take metro line 1 (green line) from Athens directly to the last stop. It takes about 30 minutes and is very convenient. · To the airport: Take bus X96 for about 90 minutes (operates 24 hours) or take the metro (transfer at Monastiraki). · To the Acropolis: In summer, the X80 express bus takes about 35 minutes directly to the Acropolis and Syntagma Square (valid with the 4.1-euro day ticket), ideal for cruise passengers. Piraeus is like Athens’ embrace of the sea. When island hopping, set aside a few hours to soak in its unique atmosphere.

Take the M1 from Thissio to Piraeus. Although most of the route is above ground, this “ancient” metro journey quickly passes through the historical heart and everyday life of Athens, finally arriving by the sea. The entire trip can be divided into three sections: 🏺 First section: Thissio → Monastiraki (through the core of the ancient sites) · Passing through ruins: This part is the highlight. The train runs right beside the ruins of the Ancient Agora, with ancient Greek walls and fragments just outside the window. This “metro running through history” scene is very unique. · Around Thissio: The station area is lively, with not only ancient sites but also modern art spaces like the Herakleidon Museum. 🏙️ Second section: Monastiraki → Omonia (urban life) · “Station museum”: At Monastiraki station, you can notice the remains of an ancient riverbed over 2,000 years old displayed inside the station. This was an unexpected discovery during metro construction. From here northward, the train runs through clusters of buildings. · City glimpse: This route passes through Athens’ bustling old town commercial area. Through the window, you can see dense shops, cafes, and the Acropolis hill faintly visible in the distance. ⚓ Third section: Omonia → Piraeus (heading toward the sea breeze at the port) · Leaving the city: As you get closer to Piraeus, the view outside the window changes from dense buildings to open spaces, with a stronger industrial port atmosphere along the way. · Final stop Piraeus: As one of Europe’s largest passenger ports, you can feel the sea breeze as soon as you exit the station. The port itself has a lively seafood market and a pleasant seaside promenade worth exploring. If you have time, finding a restaurant by the dock to watch the sunset is a very relaxing choice. This line, opened in 1869, is an “antique.” The train makes a distinctive “creaking” sound as it passes, which is part of the experience.

We recently travelled by ferry from #limassol to #piraeus, together with our pets, and I thought it would be useful to share our experience, particularly for anyone considering making the same journey with dogs. 🐾 Travelling with pets #petfriendly The ship has 8 pet-friendly cabins, as well as other accommodation options. There is also a dedicated outdoor pet area, where our lovely pets could enjoy a walk and some fresh air during the long journey. For us, this was particularly important given the duration of the trip. 🛏️ Ship & cabins The ship is somewhat old, and the cabins are fairly basic, providing only the essentials. However, everything served its purpose. More importantly, the crew were extremely polite, friendly and helpful with everything we needed, which made the overall experience much more pleasant. 🍽️ Food & drinks The food at the restaurant was decent, although prices were a little higher than what you would normally expect. There is also a bar serving coffee, sandwiches, refreshments and other basic snacks and drinks, which is convenient during such a long journey. 🧳 Boarding & check-in Boarding itself was straightforward and easy, although the baggage-checking process took some time. One important piece of advice: make sure you have all the necessary documents for both passengers and pets readily available. The check-in and document-control process is taken seriously, so being properly prepared will save you unnecessary stress. 💶 Prices The prices were quite reasonable considering the distance and duration of the journey: · Airplane-style seats start from around €40. · A single-occupancy cabin costs €76. · The charge is €50 per pet. For anyone travelling with a large dog, €50 is considerably cheaper than transporting the dog as “cargo” on an airplane. It also has the advantage that you can travel together and have access to your pet during the journey. ⏱️ Journey time The total duration of our trip from Limassol to Piraeus was approximately 31 hours. It is certainly a long journey, so a cabin makes a big difference in terms of comfort. Overall, the ship itself may not be particularly modern or luxurious, but the experience was well organised, pet-friendly and made much better by the polite and helpful crew. For people travelling between Cyprus and Greece with pets—especially larger dogs—the ferry is definitely an option worth considering. ⛴️ Boat name: Marina Company name: Scandro Holding LTD #pet-friendly

Santorini is very different from other islands in the Aegean Sea—it’s more refined, more spectacular, and indeed the most popular and commercialized Greek island. Its iconic blue and white houses and cliffside sunsets make it a dream travel destination for many. 🌋 Natural wonders and history · Crescent bay and volcano: About 3,600 years ago, a volcanic eruption caused the center to collapse, forming a huge caldera. You can take a boat to the active volcano on Nea Kameni Island and swim in the hot springs. · “Pompeii of the Aegean”: The Akrotiri archaeological site is a Bronze Age city buried under volcanic ash, exceptionally well preserved. 📍 Main towns and activities · Oia: The place to watch sunsets and see blue-domed churches. The scenery is beautiful but crowded. It’s recommended to stay overnight or visit early in the morning to enjoy the quiet. · Fira: The island’s center, with the most convenient transport and nightlife. You can try riding a donkey or take the cable car to and from the old port. · Imerovigli: Known as the “balcony of the Aegean,” it’s the highlight of the cliff hike (about 10 km from Fira to Oia) and quieter than Oia. · Unique beaches: Volcanic activity created distinctive red and black sand beaches, such as Kamari and Perissa. 🍷 Food and fun · Cuisine: The volcanic soil produces unique flavors. Must-try dishes include Santorini fava beans, tomato balls, and the local white wine Assyrtiko. · Wine: With a grape-growing history of over 3,000 years, visiting Santo Wines winery offers both wine tasting and panoramic volcano views. ⚠️ Travel tips · Best season: To avoid crowds, choose May–June or September–October; July–August is the hottest and most crowded. · Transport: The ferry from Piraeus to Santorini takes about 5–7 hours. SeaJets high-speed ferries are a main option. On the island, renting a car or ATV is recommended. Buses are cheaper but very crowded in peak season.

When it comes to Piraeus, many people think of it only as a transit point to the Greek islands. But this city, with over 2,500 years of history and known as the “gateway guardian,” is a charming destination in its own right, blending ancient civilization with modern energy. ⚓️ Port atmosphere: more than just a transport hub Piraeus is Greece’s largest port and a key gateway to the Mediterranean. Its charm lies within its various harbors: · Bustling and tranquil harbors: The main port area is busy and orderly, with giant ferries and cruise ships coming and going. Zea Marina and Mikrolimano are filled with luxury yachts and colorful fishing boats, lined with seaside restaurants offering a peaceful and pleasant vibe. · Witness to history: The harbor has seen Athens’ golden age. The ancient city wall ruins connecting Athens and Piraeus from the 5th century BC, along with the archaeological museum showcasing Athens’ maritime glory (including a bronze statue from the 6th century BC), tell stories of a glorious past. · Modern energy: At night, the port area transforms into a “little Europe.” There are unique bars like Red Bar where you can enjoy rock or metal music, and lively spots like El Chapo where you can party by the harbor’s morning light until the early hours. 🏙️ City charm: where ancient meets modern Piraeus’ appeal goes beyond the harbor, reaching into every corner of the city: · Cultural landmarks: The city center’s municipal theater is a neoclassical gem and a cultural hub. Nearby, the Piraeus Tower has been reborn after 50 years of closure as Greece’s first green skyscraper, symbolizing the city’s future. · Fresh seafood and local flavor: The seafood here is incredibly fresh, and grilled octopus at a seaside restaurant is a must-try. You can shop for local specialties at the municipal market or enjoy traditional Greek dishes with live music at the Agioneri tavern like a local. · Born from the sea: Every May, the city hosts the “Ocean Day” festival, celebrating its deep connection to the sea with concerts, exhibitions, and themed shows, bringing the entire waterfront to life. Next time you visit Greece, consider spending more time in this “Mediterranean pearl” to experience its unique harbor rhythm and city pulse.
