Dochula Pass – A Glimpse of the Himalayas
We passed through Dochula Pass both on the way from Thimphu to Punakha and again on the return — and each time, I hoped for that famous panoramic view of the Himalayas.
When the sky is clear, the view is truly breathtaking — snow-capped Himalayan peaks stretching across the horizon like a silent wall of white. But as with many mountain passes, it all depends on the weather. On one leg of the trip, it was unfortunately too hazy, and the mountains stayed hidden behind the clouds. Luckily, on the way back, the sky opened up just enough for us to catch a glimpse of those majestic peaks — and it was magical.
The pass itself is lined with 108 chortens (stupas), prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and crisp mountain air. Even without perfect visibility, it’s a peaceful stop full of quiet reverence.
Tip: If you’re passing through, have your camera ready — and a little patience. The mountains don’t always show themselves, but when they do, it’s unforgettable.
