About the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
ABOUT Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum is a museum that opened on March 6, 1999 (Heisei 11) on the 7th and 8th floors of Hakata Riverain, a cultural and commercial facility in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City.
Fukuoka City has long played the role of a hub city for Asian exchange, based on its geographical and historical characteristics as a gateway for Asian culture since ancient times. The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum was established as one of Fukuoka City's pioneering efforts in Asian exchange, and is the only museum in the world that systematically collects and exhibits modern and contemporary Asian art.
The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum invites Asian artists and researchers to stay and create works at the museum, and through various art exchanges such as research on Asian art, it functions as a place where people can become familiar with Asian art and culture.
It is an exchange-oriented museum that aims not only for Fukuoka, Japan, and Asia, and for citizens and people involved in art to simply meet, but also for them to understand each other, create and disseminate together.
The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum also systematically collects a wide variety of works of Asian modern and contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures, prints, and crafts, that are of outstanding artistic quality and uniqueness. As of 2017, the museum has a collection of approximately 2,900 pieces, mainly modern art from the 19th century to the present, from 23 countries and regions east of Pakistan, south of Mongolia, and north to west of Indonesia.
The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum also has a mural by Chinese artist Bu Hua at the first floor entrance as a base for visitors to explore the old town of Hakata, and has opened an "Art Cafe" on the seventh floor lounge with approximately 10,000 books on Asian art and travel, both domestic and international.
