Ganlu Temple was first built in the Northern Wei Dynasty and has a history of 1,400 years. According to legend, when Ganlu Temple was first built, it was named Baicao Temple. Princess Nanyang, the third daughter of Emperor Yang of Sui, became a nun here because she was dissatisfied with her father's tyranny. Her Buddhist name was Miaoshan. When Emperor Yang of Sui learned about it, he was furious and burned down Baicao Temple. Miaoshan was rescued by Dou Jiande, the leader of the peasant uprising army at that time, and was escorted to Cangyan Mountain in western Hebei to live in seclusion and practice. In the Tang Dynasty, when Buddhism flourished, Baicao Temple was rebuilt and renamed Ganlu Temple.
