Bangrak area on Charoen Krung Road is considered another old area of Bangkok that is rich in a variety of arts and cultures. It is home to communities of Thai, Chinese, Western, and Indian people. It is a place where colonial-style buildings from over a hundred years ago are beautifully blended among modern skyscrapers. It is a source of many restaurants, museums, and chic galleries... and Harmonique, located in Soi Charoen Krung 34, has an image that clearly reflects the identity of this area. It is an atmosphere that makes you want to visit it all the time.
🏠 Location/Atmosphere
From Charoen Krung Road, walk into Soi Charoen Krung 34 (the same alley as Wat Muang Kae) and just a short distance away, you will see the shop on the right. The entrance to the shop looks small, like an alley or a house, but there is a sign in front of the shop's name that is clearly visible.
... From the small and uninviting entrance, stepping inside makes you feel as if you have entered a world where time has stopped in the 18th-19th century. Starting from the inner door, which is a wooden screen with graceful fretwork. There is a large banyan tree spreading its branches like an arch on top. There are statues of both Chinese and Indian gods on both sides of the door. Next to it is a shady garden area. The large building looks like an ancient Chinese shophouse with a long balcony. When you enter the room, you will find furniture and decorations that are a mix of Thai, Chinese, and Western, but they all look chic and harmonious... It is a retro atmosphere that is both beautiful and natural. It is not intentionally decorated to be perfect in every nook and cranny like a shop decorated by a famous interior designer. There are still some messy corners, with cups and bowls placed together with decorations in the cabinets. It gives the feeling of an old house that has been lived in for a long time. It has a unique charm that is hard to find.
As for the seating area, there are seats on the balcony, in the garden, and inside the building. Outside, there are trees that provide shade, so you can fully enjoy the natural breeze without feeling hot and stuffy.
With the atmosphere and hidden location in the style of the shop, Hidden Gem, this shop is very popular with foreign tourists. The shop's menu is clearly printed in English, focusing on all Thai-Chinese food. There are both single dishes and rice dishes. This time, we tried the following:
➡️ Seafood Stir-fried Noodles - When ordering this menu, we thought we would get stir-fried seafood noodles, but it turned out that both the appearance and taste of this menu are more similar to Pad Thai. It only has sliced carrots, medium-sized shrimps, and fresh squids scored for easy eating. The taste is sour and sweet, which is okay.
➡️ Crab Cakes: It is similar to crab cakes that are coated in flour and fried. It is sprinkled with crispy basil. Dip it in sweet and spicy sauce. It is very enjoyable to eat.
➡️ Chicken Green Curry: It looks like Chinese-style green curry. The curry is quite clear. It does not smell strongly of curry paste. It also has young coconut.
➡️ Egg Fried Rice: The rice grains are soft but not too lumpy. The stir-fried eggs have a mild taste. You can eat it with rice instead of plain rice. You should not eat it by itself because it is too bland.
➡️ Orange Juice: It is pure green orange juice that is sweet and refreshing (maybe a little syrup is added, but not too much to ruin the taste). It is kept very cold. No ice, I like it a lot...
