A three-day self-driving tour guide in Dali
The wind at Xiaguan, the flowers at Shangguan, the snow at Cangshan Mountain, and the moon at Erhai Lake. Dali is a place you must visit in your life. But there are too many pitfalls in Dali, and Dali will punish anyone who doesn’t make a strategy or plan! Especially during peak season! I just left Dali, and now I’m putting together a complete guide for a three-day trip to Dali to avoid any pitfalls!
🗓Itinerary:
It is recommended to spend one day in Shuanglang, Haixi, and Gucheng (replaced by Xiaguan during peak season).
1⃣️Day 1: Shuanglang.
When you drive to Shuanglang, you will see the scenery of Cangshan Mountain, Erhai Lake, green tiles and white walls, and your heart will start to get excited. But don’t be happy too soon, because the traffic is quite congested. It is recommended to arrive in the morning or at noon, as traffic is most congested in the afternoon and evening. So make plans and time before going out.
Definitely, definitely, definitely in Shuanglang‼ ️Friends, stay in a sea view room, because that’s the meaning of coming to Shuanglang. The sea view rooms here are all close to the water. Being close to Erhai Lake, it feels great! You don't have to look for a spot to see the sea. You can enjoy the Erhai Lake, seagulls and sunset from your room.
Most of the places near the water here are homestays. If you choose carefully, you will find a good one. We stayed at Zuokanyunqi, which had a good location, facilities, services, scenery, etc.
After settling down in Shuanglang and taking a short rest, you can go to the town or the beach to take photos. This is still a good time to take photos. I think wearing ethnic clothes in an ancient town looks great in photos, and wearing a retro wedding dress at the beach looks great in photos!
There is quite a lot to eat in Shuanglang. After having dinner in the town, you can go back to the B&B to rest. Don't have too high expectations on the food here, it's just like that, it's okay. Because only when you arrive in Dali Ancient Town will you realize how annoying it is to have a meal.
There is a common problem of noisy sound of waves when sleeping in waterfront rooms. The one we stayed in, which was called "Sitting and Watching the Clouds Rise", was just okay. The doors and windows were relatively soundproof, but we still got woken up at two or three in the morning. It is recommended to choose a waterfront room on the second or third floor, which is slightly better, but of course, more expensive.
The next day, you can stroll around the ancient town, enjoy the scenery on the balcony, and then prepare to go to the next destination.
2⃣️Day 2: Majiuyi Village.
Starting from Shuanglang, follow the Ring Sea Road and National Highway 214 to reach Majiuyi Village. The scenery on the Haixi side is more pristine than that on the Haidong side, the environment is quieter, and it is more relaxing overall, especially Majiuyi Village, which has few people and beautiful scenery and is worth staying in. Be sure to choose a homestay near the water. There is an ecological corridor trail downstairs, and you can see the mountains when you push the door and the sea when you open the door. There are many homestays in this area. We chose Luyin Quanyunshui Villa, which has a 270-degree sea view room, where you can see the sea and the sunrise at the same time. You can watch the sunrise while lying in bed, how beautiful, elegant and classy!
You can ride a bike or take a walk on the ecological corridor downstairs. There are much fewer tourists than in Shuanglang, and the viewing area is flat and wide. To be honest, this experience is much better than Shuanglang! I like Haixi very much! It’s just that Haixi doesn’t have a strong commercial atmosphere, with very few businesses and restaurants.
3⃣️Day 3: Dali Ancient Town (or Xiaguan City)
To be honest, this is the place I least want to go. If you go there in the off-season, you can stay for a night, but don't go there in the peak season, as I missed the opportunity this time. Oh my god, the traffic is so terrible! People follow the crowd, block, block, block! The ancient city was filled with a mixture of people and vehicles; it was simply a mess. This time we stayed at the Honglongjing Hotel in the ancient city. Cars could not drive in between 8 am and 8 pm. Only after 8 pm could we go to the nearby parking lot and drive the car to the hotel parking lot. What a trouble!
If you are visiting the ancient city, it is recommended to avoid Renmin Road and Fuxing Road as they are so crowded! You can go into the alleys, which have an ancient city atmosphere and are quiet and peaceful. There is a free park called Yu'er Garden where you can also go for a walk.
But in general, if you are not obsessed with Dali Ancient Town, don't come here, it's really quite ordinary. The Zhaoxing Dong Village, Lizhuang Ancient Town, and even Wufengxi Ancient Town that I have been to are much better than here!
So I personally suggest you choose to stay in Xiaguan on the 3rd day, and choose a five-star hotel which also has sea view rooms. Besides, the transportation and business here are convenient. Wouldn’t it be nice to live happily there? There is really no need to add to the congestion in Dali Ancient Town.
As for the many places in Dali that I haven’t recommended, one reason is that I didn’t go there this time, and the other is that I don’t recommend checking in at every place. It would be so tiring and there would be no point in just rushing around. certainly. If you have enough time, just do it yourself.
