Guangzhou: The Former Residence of Hong Xian Nu
The former residence of the famous Cantonese opera artist Hong Xian Nu is located in Guangzhou's Overseas Chinese New Village, known as the 'First Village of Overseas Chinese in China.' Hong Xian Nu lived here from 1957 until her death in 2013. The residence has since been listed as the fourth batch of historical buildings in Guangzhou. Outside the residence, a new golden bronze statue of Hong Xian Nu has been added. The building is a faux three-story Western-style house with a cream-colored exterior wall, pink eaves, and an independent garden. The lower floor includes a practice room, a piano, a dining room, and a living room where Hong Xian Nu once hosted Zhou Enlai, Deng Yingchao, and other cultural figures. The most striking features are the pink fabric sofa, recliner, and curtains, which earned her the nickname 'Guangzhou Barbie.' The floors are connected by a spiral staircase. The second floor houses Hong Xian Nu's bedroom, study, guest room, and an exhibition hall, which is currently hosting an exhibition of her opera costumes and calligraphy.
