This green old house holds the memory of the entire city of Kaohsiung
Walking into the Kaohsiung Museum of History is like opening a thick but moving city diary.
This is not just a museum, but also a living historical building that has experienced wars, regime changes, and social changes.
For many locals, this light green four-story old building is no longer a scenery that will be ignored when passing by, but the starting point of Kaohsiung in their memories.
🏢 Formerly the "Kaohsiung City Office", it has a history of more than 90 years
The predecessor of the Kaohsiung Museum of History was the "Kaohsiung City Office" built during the Japanese colonial period. It was completed in 1939 and was the administrative center at the time. The architectural style combines the Japanese imperial crown style with modern architectural vocabulary. The green exterior walls and symmetrical arches and column designs are still well preserved.
After experiencing the restoration, martial law, the February 28 Incident and the democratization movement, this building witnessed the most turbulent and turning point in Kaohsiung.
Now it has transformed into a history museum, allowing the city's memory to be seen, discussed, and re-understood.
📖 The exhibition ranges from local life to social movements, making history no longer just about age
The permanent exhibition in the museum revolves around the "History of Kaohsiung's Urban Development", including the old city, immigrant culture, industrial rise and fall, traffic changes, war memories, etc. Theme exhibitions are also held from time to time to explore themes such as the February 28 Incident, the White Terror, women's history, and labor movements, bringing history into daily life and emotions, rather than just textbook knowledge.
For young people, this may be the first time they really feel: "So Kaohsiung has been like this."
For the elders or locals, it is more like a profound journey of memories.
📸 The most beautiful corner for taking photos: green buildings × arcade light and shadow
The green exterior wall outside the museum is matched with large floor-to-ceiling windows and stone column arches, which is a popular scene for taking photos and checking in, especially when the sun shines obliquely in the afternoon, the light and shadow interweave between the arcades, which is very charming.
If you like old buildings, historical atmosphere, and retro aesthetics, this is definitely a good place for photography and walking.
