Ancient burial mounds (kofun), reconstructed thatched-roof houses, and soft fields of cherry trees make it feel incredibly peaceful. I wandered around early in the morning with hardly anyone else there, watching the mist lift off the fields while the cherry blossoms swayed gently in the breeze. There’s something almost spiritual about seeing these ancient structures surrounded by fleeting sakura — a reminder of how long seasons have cycled through here. Since I traveled all over the region by car and stayed at friends' houses, I recommend that those who go to Ibaraki Prefecture first make local Japanese friends, or if you want to visit quietly and stay leisurely, consider renting a car and reserving a local inn or private lodging that suits you, or a campsite. Ibaraki Prefecture is a really large agricultural prefecture, and it is home to the academic city of Tsukuba, has access to Tokyo, and in a sense is an international hub of the Kanto region. ⭐️Start from JR Ishioka Station The area heading northeast from Ishioka City to Omitama City is full of ancient tombs and castle ruins, which at first glance look like nothing more than a rise in the grassland or a plain shrine gate and altar, but this area is full of Japanese history from the Kofun period (250AD-538AD), the Sengoku period to the Muromachi period, which is also the inspiration for Japanese Ghibli works, and there are many golf courses, sports parks, and campsites. #thingstodo Amazing park, this was first visit and we totally enjoyed the walk around and picnic time with the kids. The place feels like a maze, because of the fully blossomed trees and flowers that restrict the line of sight. There is high ground to overlook parts of the park and there is the massive oshishi that you can walk into and it looks like you sit inside the open mouth 😆. Lots of place fot children to run and play, also there is 2 long zip wires that looks really fun and kids enjoyed them to the full. All in all perfect day out, also they do have food stands as well for easy food and small gift shops.

#thingstodo Once upon a time, the dragon of Mt. Ryujin turned into a beautiful girl and used to take walks along the shores of Kashibara Pond on beautiful moonlit nights. One clear autumn night, when the beautiful girl appeared and was taking a walk, a beautiful young samurai from the castle appeared, carrying a flute. Before they knew it, the two started walking together. However, the young samurai fell into the water and died. The dragon mourned this and never appeared on the lakeside again. Legend has it that it was once five times the size, but now there are promenades, running roads, and playground equipment, making it a place for citizens to relax.

#thingstodo A good place to visit with family, and spend the day. The main attraction is, as the name suggests, flower, more specifically, roses. They have got usual roses, like white, pink, and red, but there are so many mixes of colors that I can't actually name those. I have found some dahliahs, and other flowers too. You can climb to the top to enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding mount tsukuba, or you can relax in the sheds. There are a few rides too, and a open car tour.

#2024wish There is a free parking lot where you can park about 15 large sightseeing buses. From the parking lot, walk about 550 meters past the Owatari Tunnel along the road to Otaki Bridge, and there is a guide signboard on the right side of Otaki Bridge. You can also see Shirakami Falls on the left side of Otaki Bridge. I will walk through the stairs, bridges and mountain streams beyond the guide signboard, but the scenery is good, so please be careful because your feet are slippery, especially for women's heels, so please change to sneakers. If you walk about 1 km one way, you can see the Itashiki Falls with a height of 30 meters. It's a great scenery, and the water falls in two stages and it's full of negative ions. If you've been to Keisei Baraen and was impressed, well this IBARAKI FLOWER PARK is dozens times better!! They have way more roses on a way bigger surface and cool Aoyama style cafes restaurants shopping in the 3 buildings on site and a rose farm simulation greenhouse and wood fire for your self grilled meat or marshmallows. But back to the roses, they almost omit all English ones that are so easy to get sick and instead have mostly French and Japanese Roses 🌹 that fare better in this climate. I was so impressed, beyond imagination and would go again there in a heartbeat. The shockingly STYLISH Ibaraki Flower Park has such cool interiors and layout, forests, Momiji, crafts workshops every day 🍁 and for spring there's Sakura cherry blossom forest and Hydrangea with Irises! I wish to go back here in 2024

#2024wish Very comfy place. Expect to pay about 500 yen for parking. Nice short hiking trail, some beautiful lakes, scenic paths under the cherry trees. Definitely some picturesque views here. There's is also an area with a few traditional Japanese buildings that you can explore for a a couple hundred yen. I wish to go back here in 2024

I often go to Ishioka for both work and leisure. The good thing about Ibaraki is that prices are low and the food is delicious. On the other hand, it's not very popular, so it's not crowded, which I'm grateful for.

At the entrance of Ishioka JR Station, there is a statue of a dog and two children. Like the Chuhachi dog statue at Shibuya Station, they both commemorate the story of a dog who waited for his master at the station for his entire life. The story is summarized as follows: In 1964, a dog broke into Ritsuto Elementary School in Ishioka City, became the school dog, and was named Taro and brought into the school. After that, Taro would go to JR Ishioka Station, 2 kilometers away from the school, every day regardless of wind, rain or snow. The locals didn't know who Taro was waiting for. Taro died in the summer of 1981. The school held a memorial service, and Taro's photo appeared in the elementary school's 50th anniversary magazine. After seeing the photo, the former little hostess appeared and contacted the school, only then did the truth emerge. Taro's real name is Koro. Every day, Koro would take his little master's place by walking from home to Tamatsukuri Station instead of his busy parents. Tamatsukuri is a small place in the countryside, so the little master has to take the train to the kindergarten in Ishioka City. Every time they arrived at Tamatsukuri Station, the little master would touch Koro's head and tell it to go home. But that day, perhaps the little master forgot to touch Koro's head, so Koro jumped on the train and followed the little master to Ishioka Station. At Shigang Station, the station staff asked the little owner at the ticket gate - Is this your dog? The little owner was afraid of being scolded, so he shook his head to deny it, and the staff drove Koro away. In that era which was quite unfriendly to stray dogs, the little owner then suffered from shock and fever and was bedridden for 10 days. The family went to the area around Ishioka Station six times to look for Koro, but couldn't find him. After 45 years, the little owner learned about Koro's whereabouts, and people also understood that Taro was waiting for his beloved little owner without interruption for 18 years😭 This touching story was later made into a movie. A pet only has one owner in its lifetime, so we should love it well😍

A whiskey distillery operating in the Yasato area at the foot of the famous Mt. Tsukuba. The building was renovated from an old community center and all locally sourced wood was used for the renovation. The distillery strives to make whiskey that is in line with the local climate. Hinomaru Whisky, distilled at the distillery and released for sale in June 2022, won both the Gold Award and Category Winner in the Japanese New Make Spirits category at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition.

This time, I went to a meat restaurant in Ishioka, Ibaraki Prefecture, and it was the most delicious meat I've ever had in Japan. Of all the meat, the soup (beef tongue) was the most delicious.
