Kunen-an is famous for its autumn leaves. It was originally the villa of the great entrepreneur Itami Yataro. It took nine years from 1900 to build a 6,400-square-meter garden, so it was named Kunen-an. There are more than 700 maple trees of more than 60 species in the gardens built with the thatched cottages and Mt. Unzen and the Tsukushi Plain as the background. Rhododendrons and bryophytes surround it. The garden is full of greenery in spring, and is dyed red in autumn, making it a famous spot for viewing red leaves in Saga. It is only open to the public during the maple leaf season in mid-November every year.
