Unlike Mutianyu in Beijing, this location is much quieter. Who says you have to go to Beijing if you want to see the Great Wall of China? Head over to Jiayuguan in Gansu province to visit the western end of the Great Wall! The full-price ticket includes all three attractions, so visit Jiayuguan Pass first, then the Overhanging Great Wall while you still have the energy to climb, and finally the First Pier of the Great Wall. The Hexi Corridor is the area where the Han Great Wall is most concentrated and best preserved today. These Great Wall beacon towers stretch across the Hexi land, standing tall in the vast desert for two thousand years. In 1539, after 168 years, Jiayuguan Pass and its two wings of the Great Wall and the beacon towers along the line were all completed. It starts from Mount Wenshu, a branch of the Qilian Mountains in the south, connects to the steep cliffs of Heishan Mountain in the north, and links Jiayuguan Pass in the middle, forming a 15-kilometer-long wall. This complete and rigorous military defense system was later known as the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven." Transportation: Take a taxi directly from the entrance of the Pass Scenic Area. The original wall of the Overhanging Great Wall is only one section left, with a bottom width of 4 meters, a top width of 2 meters, and a height of 0.5-6 meters. The thickness of the stone layer is 10-15 cm, and the thickness of the soil layer is 10-12 cm. The scenic area of Jiayuguan will take you back in through three main attractions: the First mound, the Fort and the Overhanging Great Wall. The tickets combines the three areas. We decided to start with the Fort, but thinking back, we should have started with the wall to avoid the crowds and the heat. We decided to skip the first mound as it would have cost us some more money to go there and we weren't sure it would have been worth it. The Fort: the main entrance is really well done and has a nice visitor center with a movie playing all day round explaining shortly the history of the Fort. You will then have to take the scenic bus to go to the Fort (they are shaped like a camel, which is so cute 🐫). It's free of charge. Once there, you will be free to roam around the Fort and explore. The temple inside offers nice murals with what seemed to be a story written under. There are a few food options, which is a nice touch. You can also ride a camel which looks so much fun. However, if you can, you should definitely come at night for the mapping show, it looked amazing! Of course, it has an extra cost, but from what we've seen, it's definitely worth it! Ride the bus back to the main entrance. Of you have time, you can go down before at the museum to learn more about the area. We then exited the area and went to the next place by taxi. The Great Wall: your tour should definitely start there. It can get quite hot because of the sun, and let's be honest, the way up is not that easy. However, it is very rewarding and offer magnificent views. Lots of people put locks in the area to seal their love, and also create a heart shape with rocks on the mountain, it's really beautiful to see. If you are a bit adventurous and have good equipment, you can wander a bit farther in the mountain and enjoy the breathtaking view of this wonderful natural landscape. We only stayed around three hours total, but if you go to the first mound, you might need another hours, so allow at least half a day to tour the area.
