Zhangjiakou Fort, commonly known as Fortress, also called Xiabao, is the birthplace of Zhangjiakou urban area and the mother body of Zhangjiakou. It is a historical witness of the gradual growth and prosperity of Zhangyuan land after 580 years of vicissitudes. Zhangjiakou Fort was first built in the fourth year of Ming Xuande (1429 AD). It was originally a military fort for stationing troops. It is an important part of the Xuanfu defense system of the nine frontiers of the Great Wall in Ming Dynasty. Because it has never been lost in a war, it is known as the "Martial City" in the northern border. With the implementation of the Ming Longqing Peace Agreement's policy of opening up the border, Zhangjiakou was opened as a trading place between Mongolians and Han people, and the once-prosperous "Tea-Horse Trade" emerged. It gradually developed into the Zhangku Trade Road, a larger trade route connecting China, Mongolia and Russia during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is also famous as a northern land commercial port for its important position as a trade distribution center. Zhangjiakou Fort had a complete defense system, and many wealthy businessmen bought houses and land here, opened shops, and made their fortunes. Private residences, residential houses, and streets of the wealthy businessmen were gradually formed. More than half of the 44 foreign trading companies and 42 domestic money houses and bill shops operating in Zhangjiakou at that time were located in Zhangjiakou Fort. Wucheng Street in the east of the fort was named after Wucheng because it is close to Wucheng. It is the only street in the country named after Wucheng. It is the junction of commercial culture and military culture of this important border town. The current Zhangjiakou Fort still completely preserves the architectural layout of ten streets and ten alleys formed in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. There are 478 ancient courtyards from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After a series of protective development, it is now used as a tourist attraction. The attractions to visit include Wenchang Pavilion, Yuhuang Pavilion, Xiaobeimen, temples, Luncai Academy, Ding General's Mansion, Chahar Provincial Finance Department, Li Yuxi's Residence, Chang Wanda's Residence, etc.
