“Nothing can stop you from yearning for freedom.” Every time I hear this song, I think of the wonderful moments of my self-drive tour in Yili. 🕐️DAY 1: Urumqi—Anjihai Grand Canyon—Jinghe 13:00 Arrive in Urumqi, Xinjiang. Pick up the car at the airport, an orange Tank 300. Have a meal at Loulan BBQ (Yingbin Road Branch), then head to Anjihai Grand Canyon. This is a great first stop for a self-drive tour. The scenery on the way to Anjihai is already stunning. The sky is high and the clouds are light, the view is vast and desolate, and there are snow-capped mountains in the distance. In the evening, arrive in Jinghe County and check in to the hotel to prepare for tomorrow's trip to Sayram Lake, Bole. 🕐️DAY 2: Sayram Lake—Guozigou Bridge—Yining City Morning: Head to Sayram Lake, Bole. When we first arrived, the weather was not good, it was overcast and gloomy. Keep going, and after passing the south gate, the weather cleared up. The sun shone down, and the color of the lake and the surrounding grassland scenery became as beautiful and stunning as the legends say. As we drove forward, the scenery was overwhelming. On the left, there was a multi-layered green grassland and cedar forest, and on the right, the blue of Sayram Lake was clearly visible in the sunlight. The road ahead stretched straight to the snow-capped mountains in the distance. The vast, magnificent, and multi-layered scenery made us excited and thrilled. Evening: Leave Sayram Lake Scenic Area at 7:30 pm and head to Guozigou Bridge. The stunning scenery began after driving down from the Guozigou Bridge viewing platform. After descending to the bottom of the valley and moving forward, we experienced the first shock and excitement of this trip. We drove through the mountains, with towering and steep mountains on both sides, changing vegetation, and occasional white yurts and cattle and sheep. It felt unreal, as if we were driving through a painting. Arrive at the hotel at 11 pm and have a big plate of chicken. 🕐️DAY 3: Yining—Yizhao Highway—Xiata Morning: First, we went to Liuxing Street in Yining City for breakfast. Then, the highlight of the day was the Yizhao Highway, known as the "Little Duku Highway." We drove for 8.5 hours, stopping and going, and arrived at the homestay near Xiata Ancient Road National Forest Park at around 8 or 9 pm. Today's trip on the Yizhao Highway left a deep impression on us. We started driving along the mountain, and every turn revealed different scenery, both dangerous and vast. There were winding roads, cliffs, and towering mountains in front of us, as well as deep mountains and vast skies, grasslands, and snow-capped mountains in the distance. The near, middle, and distant views were all natural. Every time we stopped, we stood by the cliff and seemed to automatically ignore the sound of passing cars. As we slowly looked into the distance, a feeling of emptiness, grandeur, insignificance, and silence naturally emerged, and we enjoyed it. In addition, there were changes. The magical thing was that after a turn, the deep brown three-dimensional mountain scenery suddenly turned into a vast grassland like a green carpet. Looking up, the sky was high and the clouds were light, and eagles were soaring. Looking down, a horse stood alone on a distant mountain, eating grass like a still life painting. Looking down again, the grassland canyon had undulating terrain, stretching to the depths of the distant mountains, with flocks of white sheep and dark cattle and horses in the mountain valleys. We continued forward, left the Yizhao Highway, turned onto County Road 758, passed several small towns, and approached Xiata. As we drove forward, there was a fairy-tale-like tranquility on the right, with a vast grassland, and on the left, a vast grassland in the foreground and silent mountains in the distance. The sky was extremely blue, the clouds were extremely white, and they were low. In the evening, we checked in to a homestay near Xiata. DAY 4: Xiata—Qiongkushitai Morning: Go to Xiata, where people wear all kinds of clothes, from short sleeves to jackets and down jackets. First, take a bus for 40 minutes, then take a sightseeing bus to the transfer bridge. Transfer Bridge—General Bridge—Kara House No. 1—Kara House No. 2. We should have reached between No. 2 and No. 3. The highlight of Xiata's scenery is the view of Muzart Glacier from the corridor-like canyon. Along the way, the mountains surround us, the grassland extends from the foot of the mountain through the tall cedar forest, and the river formed by glacial meltwater accompanies us. We rested in a shady mountain forest and saw the first squirrel. Later, we saw several more squirrels and a marmot, eating naan and looking cute. We calculated the time to Qiongkushitai and started to return. At around 6 pm, we left the scenic area and headed to Qiongkushitai. The road to Qiongkushitai was particularly challenging, with three mountains and two valleys, various hairpin turns, folding turns, and continuous 360-degree turns. It felt like we made 1,800 turns along the way... It was an unprecedented driving experience, with adrenaline pumping, excitement, and thrill. We continued forward, entered the dense forest in the mountains, and finally reached Qiongkushitai Village. DAY 5: Qiongkushitai—Wusun Ancient Road—Back Mountain—Xinyuan, Yili After breakfast at the homestay, we went to Wusun Ancient Road in the morning. We walked along a rushing river into the dense forest. We were on the left bank of the river, walking through the mountains and forests, occasionally encountering a few wooden house homestays and many silent horses grazing and resting. On the right bank of the river, there were grasslands, forests, and homestays nearby, and mountains in the distance. The mountain road was difficult to walk, with tree roots, strange rocks, and muddy horse trails. More people chose to ride horses back and forth. We went back to pack our luggage, left the homestay, and went to the back mountain. We didn't spend much time in the back mountain. If we have the chance to come again, I even feel like we should spend more time there than on Wusun Ancient Road. Then we went down the mountain and planned to reach Nalati Tourist Scenic Area, Xinyuan, from Qiongkushitai, to prepare for tomorrow's trip on the Duku Highway. We left a bit late, and calculated that it would take until 11 or 12 pm to reach Nalati, which would affect our meals and rest. So we got off the highway in Xinyuan, Yili, and stayed overnight. We arrived at the hotel in Xinyuan at around 11 pm. DAY 6: Duku Highway—Dushanzi District, Karamay, Dushanzi City Today's plan was to drive on the Duku Highway, from Xinyuan to Nalati, and then from Nalati to Dushanzi, which is equivalent to half of the Duku Highway. After getting on the Duku Highway from Nalati, the first half was relatively flat. We turned at Qiaerma and went to Tangbula Hundred Mile Gallery for a look. After passing Qiaerma, the scenery began to change. When we set off from Nalati in the morning, there was vegetation on both sides of the mountains, and everything was green. But here, the mountains began to turn gray-brown or even gray-black, and they became steeper and more dangerous. The change started at Hashilegen, at an altitude of 3,400 meters. In one photo, the sky was clear and the scenery was clear. In the next photo, the gray-white fog had already enveloped the background. The weather on the mountain changed suddenly, with fog and sporadic rain. We continued forward and reached a parking lot, where it had already turned into thick fog. We played in the snow for a while. When we set off again, the visibility was very low, and we drove slowly along the winding mountain road with the hazard lights on. After descending to a lower altitude, the fog began to dissipate, and the air was clear as if it had been washed, but it started to rain. At 10:30, we arrived in Dushanzi and left the Duku Highway. On the way into Dushanzi City, we suddenly saw the distant city lights in the darkness, and we felt a slight sense of returning to the world. DAY 7: Return trip, Urumqi—Xinzheng Airport.

From August to October, northerners head south to escape the heat, while southerners retreat to the mountains. But the real travelers are all heading to these eight spots. They’re uncrowded, affordable, and risk-free. High-speed train rides range from two to six hours. Some are full of wild charm, some are surprisingly artsy, and others let you daydream under a waterfall all afternoon. I’ve been there for you and cleared all the pitfalls. 1️⃣ Xiangtan | Hunan Caojia’ao Waterfall is a local weekend spot mostly unknown to outsiders. Search “Caojia’ao” on your map. You can drive to the mountain base, then walk 20 minutes along a stone path to hear the water. The waterfall isn’t tall, but the mist is thick. Standing on the stone platform for three minutes feels like stepping out of a fridge. ⚠️ The water flow is strongest two days after rain. On sunny afternoons after 2 PM, sunlight slants onto the pool, making the water a bright green. There are no shops on the way, so bring a bottle of water. At the mountain base, a farmhouse sells freshly cut watermelon for 5 yuan a slice, very sweet. Shaoshan tourism usually focuses on the former residence, but the nearby mountain trail is worth exploring. ⏰ Arrive before 9 AM. Climb the back mountain first. The forest smells of pine needles. Halfway up, you can see the entire alluvial plain. After descending, visit the old Nan’an private school site. Its wooden windows and courtyard are well preserved. When light filters through the main hall, it’s perfect for quiet portraits. Have lunch at Mao’s Restaurant 2 km outside the scenic area. The braised pork is on the sweet side, perfect with rice. ⚠️ Travel groups gather after 3 PM. It’s best to leave before 2 PM and take a detour toward Dishui Cave. 2️⃣ Lishui | Zhejiang Yunhe terraced fields are worth staying overnight. I stayed at Shizhai homestay in Kenggen Village. The owner grows his own vegetables, and dinner was freshly picked greens with native chicken soup. At 5:30 AM, open the window to layers of clouds. The rice paddies turn golden in the sunrise. The ticket includes shuttle buses, but if you drive, you can go straight to Qixingdun viewing platform, saving a steep climb. ⏰ After 4:30 PM, tourists thin out. You can have the sunset all to yourself. The light turns the water orange-pink, even more beautiful than sunrise. ⚠️ The village’s stone paths are slippery. Wear non-slip shoes, not sandals. Dinghu Peak in Jinyun Xiandu looks like a stone pillar from afar but is stunning up close. The park is small and can be explored in two hours. Don’t rush out. Exit the north gate and walk 20 minutes upstream along Haoxi. There’s an abandoned country road where the creek is so clear you can see stonefish. 🍜 At the park entrance, try Jinyun sesame flatbread with preserved vegetables and lard. Freshly baked, the crust is crispy and flaky. It’s 3 yuan each. Grab two and nibble while watching the creek. I prefer the ferry crossing at Qingtian Shimen Cave. Park on the south bank of the Ou River and take a 2-yuan ferry. The boatman rows slowly, like stepping back into the 1980s. The waterfall is deep in the canyon. To reach the farthest point, you must cross slippery stone steps. If you’re with family, turn back at the halfway pavilion. ⚠️ After 4 PM, the light is blocked by the mountains, making the waterfall look dull. It’s best to arrive before noon. 3️⃣ Xiamen | Fujian The beauty of Gulangyu depends on what time you arrive. ⏰ The first boat at 8 AM has almost no crowd. From Sunlight Rock, you see red roofs and flamboyant trees in the morning light. No need to buy a combo ticket. Just buy the Sunlight Rock ticket. Skim through the Piano Garden and Haoyue Garden quickly. It’s better to lose yourself in the alleys. 🍜 Fish ball soup and ma ci at Longtou Road are local favorites since childhood. The popular shops with half-hour lines are often avoided by locals. ⚠️ After 2 PM, the island fills with tour groups. It’s best to leave before 2 PM and head to Zhongshan Road across the ferry terminal for a bowl of satay noodles. Railway Culture Park is now a walking trail made from old tracks, lined with bougainvillea. Enter from Jinbang Park and walk to Wenta section. It takes 40 minutes and is almost empty. At dusk, the old platform by the tracks glows warm orange with long shadows, perfect for portraits. Much better than squeezing into a trendy café. Nanputuo Temple doesn’t require a reservation but dress appropriately. The stairs to Wulao Peak at the back are steep. Climb starting at 4:30 PM to catch the sunset over Xiamen University and Huandao Road. At Xiamen Botanical Garden, I recommend only the rainforest and succulent sections. ⚠️ The rainforest mist sprays on a schedule: 9–11 AM and 3–4 PM. Miss it, and it’s just green leaves with nothing special. 4️⃣ Zhuhai | Guangdong Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is worth a full day if you have kids under 12; half a day is enough if you’re solo. ⚠️ The ray tunnel in the whale shark pavilion is least crowded one hour after opening and one hour before closing. Avoid the 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM tour group peak. The park’s restaurants are expensive and average. Outside the exit on the right is “Hengqin Oyster House.” Fresh oysters grilled on the spot cost 48 yuan per dozen, much better value. No need to go out of your way for Lovers’ Road. It runs through the whole city. Just turn onto it anywhere. 📍 I recommend cycling from Jiuzhou Port toward Zhuhai Fisher Girl statue. The coastal trail’s 6 PM breeze carries salt and blows away the summer heat. You can see the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge silhouette without paying for a boat tour. Shared bikes are available along the way. Stop anytime if tired. The roadside lemon tea tastes better than chain stores. 5️⃣ Dongying | Shandong Yellow River Estuary Ecotourism Area is an hour’s drive from downtown. Best to drive yourself. ⏰ Mid-October is the best time for reed flowers. When the wind blows, the entire mudflat looks like rolling white waves. Take the sightseeing bus to the last stop, then walk 20 minutes to the estuary. From the boardwalk, you can see the “mandarin duck pot” where Yellow River water meets the sea—half muddy, half clear. It’s magical. ⚠️ It’s windy by the sea. Even if the sun is out at noon, bring a light jacket. There are no restaurants in the park. Bring your own snacks. After the park, go to “Fisherman’s Home” in Yellow River Estuary Town for swimming crab. September to October is peak season. Crabs cost 38 yuan each. 6️⃣ Chifeng | Inner Mongolia Hashhatu Stone Forest was my biggest surprise. It’s less famous than other sites in Keshenketeng Banner but just as impressive. Granite pillars eroded by wind into strange shapes. Walking on the boardwalk feels like stepping onto another planet. ⏰ After 2 PM, the light hits the stones at an angle, turning them reddish-brown, ten times more beautiful than the harsh midday white. The park is at high altitude. By mid-August, you’ll need a fleece jacket at night. 🚄 It’s about a two-hour drive from Chifeng city. The road is good, but the last 10 km is winding mountain road, so drive slowly. On the way back, stop at Reshuitang Town for a hot spring bath. It costs a few dozen yuan and washes away a day’s bumps. 7️⃣ Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture | Xinjiang Sayram Lake: I don’t recommend buying tickets at the park entrance. Drive along the ring road to the grasslands near the south gate. It’s so quiet you can hear your own breath. ⏰ From 7 to 9 PM, the lake changes from blue to purple to pink. Swans wait on the shore to be fed flatbread. 🍜 The Kazakh yogurt sold at the park entrance is thick enough to stick to the cup. It costs 10 yuan a cup. You’ll want to take some home. ⚠️ The wind by the lake cuts through you. Even in summer, bring a windbreaker. Anjihai Grand Canyon: Search “Anjihai Grand Canyon” on your map, not “Hongshan Canyon.” There are no guardrails on the canyon edge. Stay at least 3 meters from the cliff when taking photos. 📍 The best viewpoint is on the sandy road north of the canyon. After 4 PM, sunlight reaches the valley floor, showing red, yellow, and gray rock layers like a geology textbook cut by a knife. There’s no entrance fee or shops here. Bring your own water and snacks. Wenquan County’s hot springs are perfect for relaxing on your last day. The county’s spring water is over 40 degrees Celsius. Soaking for half an hour eases all travel aches. There’s an old but clean “Hot Spring Hotel” where a night with breakfast costs under 300 yuan. At night, visit the county night market for grilled lamb ribs. They cost 3 yuan a skewer and are so tender they drip oil. 8️⃣ Ma’anshan | Anhui Yangtze River Caishi Ji cultural ecological tourism area centers on Taibai Tower built on a cliff. The tower isn’t tall but the location is spectacular. From the second-floor corridor, you see the Yangtze River bend below. Cargo ships look like toy boats. ⏰ The light is best after 3 PM. The river sparkles like scattered silver. There’s a riverside trail ending at Sanyuan Cave, a natural stone cave. Cool breezes flow in, more comfortable than air conditioning. 🍜 After the park, go to a small restaurant next to “Hongbin Silk Painting” in Caishi Town. Try Dangtu pork noodles. The noodles are thick, the meat slices thick, and the broth soy-based, flavorful but not salty. ⚠️ The park is closed on Mondays. Don’t make a wasted trip. From late August to mid-October, these eight cities avoid crowds and heat. Xiangtan and Lishui are great for weekend trips. Xiamen and Zhuhai suit a short holiday. While some squeeze into popular cities like a sauna, others are already by highland lakes enjoying the breeze and snow-capped mountains. These 8 places are all reachable within 2 to 6 hours by high-speed train, offering experiences ranging from bustling city life to wild, hidden spots. The best part is fewer people and stunning views that hold up well. 1️⃣ Shanghai Don’t just think of the Bund packed with people when you hear Shanghai. The Expo Park and Guangfulin in August and September are locals’ secret spots to breathe easy. The Expo Park area has been transformed into a riverside walkway with cafes. Walking along the Huangpu River tributary at dusk, you’ll see local uncles fishing, with at least ten times fewer tourists than the Bund. Guangfulin cultural site is even better. The underwater museum’s architecture looks like rooftops floating on the lake. After 3 PM, the slanting light hits the water, creating reflections clear enough for postcard shots. Yu Garden is crowded, but if you go right at 8 AM when it opens, you can have the Nine-Bend Bridge almost to yourself. Afterward, head to the nearby Old City God Temple to enjoy a basket of Nanxiang soup dumplings, with rich broth and fresh filling—much better than waiting two hours at noon. If you must visit Disneyland, pick a weekday and buy the early access pass. Rush in at 7:30 AM to ride Tron Lightcycle Power Run first, saving two hours of waiting. In the afternoon heat, cool off inside the indoor attractions. ⚠️ Some Expo Park venues are closed on Mondays. Don’t make a wasted trip. 2️⃣ Nyingchi | Tibet Nyingchi is the most altitude-friendly and oxygen-rich area in Tibet. After the rainy season in August and September, the grasslands shine green, and snow still clings to mountain peaks. Driving along the 318 National Highway near Bomi feels like traveling through a painting, with barley fields and Tibetan wooden houses lining the road. Occasionally, yaks cross slowly, and you’ll need to brake and wait patiently. Basongcuo Lake’s water is unrealistically blue. Rent a bike to circle half the lake, picnic by the shore when tired, and bring a light jacket because the mountain breeze can be chilly. For those wanting to travel the Yunnan-Tibet route, Nyingchi is the perfect starting point. The road is gentler than the Sichuan-Tibet route, but the scenery is just as stunning. Don’t try to hike the entire Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon; the view of Namjagbarwa Peak from the lookout is already breathtaking. Before 10 AM, clouds are minimal; in the afternoon, the peak is mostly hidden. 🚄 The high-speed train from Lhasa to Nyingchi takes just over three hours, much more comfortable than driving. 3️⃣ Xi’an | Shaanxi Xi’an’s summer is like an oven, but by August and September, mornings and evenings cool down, making it perfect for exploring the city wall and museums. The Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors Museum is a must-visit early. It opens at 8:30 AM, so head straight to Pit 1. Standing by the pit and seeing the army formation from 2,000 years ago gives a sense of awe photos can’t capture. By 10 AM, tour groups arrive, so you can leisurely visit Pit 2 then. Qinling Zhongnan Mountain is the real backyard for Xi’an locals. Take the subway to Weiqu Nan Station, then a taxi up the mountain. The air is much more humid than downtown. The first day’s blue was bright and passionate; the next morning, after rain overnight, the temperature dropped sharply.
