Tianjin Century-Old Street City Walk Guide!
“Arrived in London? Why does it feel like Jiefang North Road?” On social media posts about City Walk, such remarks often appear.
-
👣 Starting from Tianjin Station Square, crossing Jiefang Bridge, a century-old street known as the "Oriental Wall Street" unfolds beneath your feet.
On both sides of the street, the buildings are like frozen music: Gothic spires pierce the skyline, Romanesque arcades are heavy and steady, Baroque carvings whisper in the light and shadow—they together weave a splendid panorama of "International Architectural Expo," outlining the street’s unique European style.
-
👣 The former McGregor Bank building stands solemnly with six Ionic columns at its entrance, resembling a mysterious ancient castle; the huge dome and skylight pavilion of the former Russo-Chinese Bank echo Renaissance rhythms while featuring Russian style; the former German Club, with its brick, wood, and stone mixed structure, interprets Germanic simplicity and strength; the former Sino-French Industrial and Commercial Bank building, with its classical corner design, has become a "romantic street corner" in the eyes of passersby...
.
👣 Walking here, a question quietly arises: among such a dense cluster of Western-style buildings, why are "banks" particularly prominent? The answer lies in the tides of history. After Tianjin opened as a treaty port in 1860, Britain and France built roads and buildings in their concessions, gradually creating a main thoroughfare running through both concessions—then called "Zhongjie," which is today’s Jiefang North Road.
.
👣 In 1882, the British HSBC was the first foreign bank to open here, becoming China’s first foreign bank. Soon after, financial institutions from France, the U.S., Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, and others followed. "Zhongjie" gradually became a hub for foreign banks and enterprises, controlling finance in Tianjin and even North China. Thus, the name "Oriental Wall Street" spread far and wide.
Today, Jiefang North Road remains one of Tianjin’s financial institution clusters, with over 20 permanent financial institutions, including the People’s Bank of China and seven Chinese bank branches such as the Bank of China, all located here.
.
👣 Entering the Bank of China (Tianjin) Museum, sunlight gently filters through stained glass, illuminating old photos, historical snapshots, and precious artifacts that silently tell the century-long story of Tianjin’s finance. "We came to Tianjin just for these European-style old buildings!" said a few university students from Henan, proudly showing off a whole book full of stamps collected at the museum: "Look, it feels so rewarding!"
In 2012, the "Tianjin Jiefang North Road Historical and Cultural Street Protection Plan" was officially announced, clearly defining it as "a concentrated area of Tianjin’s modern financial office buildings characterized by Western classical style." The historic buildings continue their original mission, with the pulse of finance never stopping.
.
👣 At the Lishunde Museum, a popular puzzle game among young people is underway, as participants seem to open a door to the past: an old menu from Li Hongzhang’s banquet for the King of Hawaii, a first-rank official’s hat awarded to De Cuilin, silverware used by Sun Yat-sen, the piano played by Wanrong and Miss Zhao Si, and a European Renaissance carved bench that has hosted countless celebrities... Each old item tells a story of an era.
.
👣 Visiting the Western Art Museum, exquisite classical pavilions, dazzling crystal chandeliers, and rustic redwood floors create an artistic realm that immerses visitors. "Walking along Jiefang North Road and unexpectedly encountering an art exhibition is such a pleasant surprise," said Ms. Fan, a local resident, who lingered in this century-old building, her gaze tracing every brick and tile, as if glimpsing the street’s past prosperity.
.
👣 The European-style buildings on Jiefang North Road, weathered by time, are being revitalized in today’s Tianjin: the former Xinhua Trust Savings Bank has become a high-end art hotel; the former Beiyang Commercial Bank now welcomes guests as the "edible library"—Xinhua Restaurant; the former Gordon Hall is planned to be transformed into a cultural and art center...
.
This City Walk route, once considered "niche," is like a hidden treasure attracting more and more visitors by reputation. Strolling here, you’ll see newlyweds capturing happiness against a century-old backdrop; live streamers enthusiastically sharing the sights before the camera; and curious foreign tourists raising their cameras to carry these stories even farther.
