Thought it would only be overcrowded? These 8 summer escapes are off the beaten path and affordable
When it comes to summer getaways, most people first think of Chengde, Lushan, or Moganshan. But I have to say, those places are now packed like sardines. These 8 spots are reachable within 2 hours by high-speed train, more than half are so unknown that even locals rarely visit, and the average temperature in July and August is just over 20°C. Few crowds, beautiful scenery, and low costs—I’m sharing my secret list.
NO.1 Longnan | Gansu
⏰ Leave the city at 8 AM and head to Tianchi in Wen County first. This alpine lake hidden in the mountains has water so blue it looks unreal, surrounded by untouched forest. When I went, there were only three people on the boardwalk, so quiet you could hear fish jumping out of the water.
📍 Walk along the boardwalk to the deepest viewing platform, about half an hour. The reflections there are stunning.
At noon, head to Guan’egou, which splits into two valleys.
⚠️ Don’t try to cover both in one go. In the afternoon, explore the right side, Eman Valley, which has many waterfalls and dense shade, so it’s cool to walk.
🍜 There are a few farmhouses at the valley entrance. Order stir-fried cured meat with cold noodles, about 30 yuan per person, much better than the boxed meals in tourist spots. If you have time, visit the left side, Guanzhu Valley, the next morning to see alpine meadows and rhododendrons (there’s a last bloom in July).
NO.2 Yongzhou | Hunan
📍 Shanggantang ancient village, hidden under Dupang Ridge, is a thousand-year-old village that even locals rarely visit. My first thought when I arrived was: this is so peaceful. The village stretches along the Xiemu River, with more than half the old houses still inhabited, and chili peppers and cured meat hanging at the doors.
If you only have half a day, follow this route: enter the village from Buying Bridge, visit Wenchang Pavilion, then walk along the stone path to the ancient dock by the river.
⚠️ There are no restaurants in the village, so buy some snacks and fruit in town before you go. Sitting under the shade by the river to eat is much more comfortable than waiting in long lines at tourist spots.
🍜 Highly recommend Hejia Noodle House in town. Have a bowl of their marinated noodles for breakfast, just 3 yuan, ten times better than the popular spots in Changsha.
NO.3 Hanzhong | Shaanxi
Shimen plank road, I’d call it the “less crowded version of Jianmen Pass.”
⏰ Go after 3 PM when the light perfectly filters through the ridges onto the plank road, making the walk cool and shaded. The whole walk takes about an hour. There’s a narrow section where only one person can pass, with the green Bahe River below—those afraid of heights might feel weak in the knees.
After the plank road, drive 20 minutes to the city. 📍 Ancient Hantai is right by the street.
⚠️ Closed on Mondays, so don’t go for nothing. It’s small inside, but the second floor of Wangjiang Tower offers a great view overlooking the rooftops of old Hanzhong. Take a stroll along the Han River at dusk; the river breeze blows away the midday heat.
🍜 For dinner, go to Hanjiang Fish Restaurant and order yellow catfish stewed with tofu. The fish is freshly caught and so fresh it’ll make your eyebrows drop.
NO.4 Aba | Sichuan
Jiuzhaigou or Siguniang Mountain in July and August? I can say responsibly that for those who just want a relaxing summer escape without too much effort, Jiuzhaigou is better. 📌 Although there are more people than in winter, the shuttle buses are frequent and the routes well established. If you arrive before 8:30 AM and rush in with the first group, you can avoid the crowds.
But if you have kids who can walk or good stamina yourself, Shuangqiao Valley in Siguniang Mountain is a top-tier experience. The sightseeing bus stops at five stations, and each stop is worth getting off to explore.
⚠️ Don’t hike Changping Valley; the dirt road there is exhausting. Huanglong is perfect this season, with plenty of water in the Five-Color Pool, but the high altitude can cause altitude sickness, so bring an oxygen canister.
NO.5 Xianning | Hubei
📍 Chibi ancient battlefield—does it sound like a place to visit in summer? It is, and I was pleasantly surprised. In the mornings of July and August, the riverside breeze is cool, and it’s so quiet you can pose for photos by the statue of Zhou Yu for 10 minutes without anyone rushing you.
⚠️ Key tip: don’t go after lunch; it gets unbearably hot then.
⏰ The best way is to enter at 8:30 AM, visit Fengchu Temple and Baifeng Terrace first, then see the cliff carvings at Chibi for the river view. The whole trip takes about two hours. Leave the site around 10:30 AM, have lunch in town, and spend the afternoon relaxing in your hotel’s air conditioning.
🍜 I recommend the Jiang catfish stewed with tofu at Chibi Old Street Fish Restaurant. The fish is tender and melts in your mouth, with a slightly spicy pepper broth that’s refreshing.
NO.6 Yichun | Heilongjiang
If you don’t mind taking an extra high-speed train, come to Yichun. The average summer temperature is just over 20°C, and you’ll need a light jacket at night.
📌 Tangwang River Forest and Strange Stones Park has a great route with no repeated paths. There’s a “forest bathing trail” with wooden boardwalks surrounded by red pine forests, and the air smells strongly of pine resin.
⚠️ Don’t wear shorts because I got over 20 mosquito bites below my knees that day. Long pants and insect repellent are a must.
🍜 After the park, there’s a “Lao Liu Dumpling House” in town. Their sauerkraut pork dumplings come 18 to a plate, enough for two people. Dip them in garlic and vinegar for maximum satisfaction after a long day.
NO.7 Qiandongnan | Guizhou
📍 Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village—if you hate crowds, get up at 6:30 AM and catch the first sightseeing bus to the viewing platform. The whole village is still asleep, with only cooking smoke and birdsong. That scene alone is worth the trip. 📌 But if you have more time, I recommend Zhaoxing Dong Village, which is half the size of Xijiang but much quieter. Take a taxi to Tang’an Dong Village to watch the terraced fields at sunset. It’s a 30-minute round trip with scenery that rivals Longji.
Stay overnight in Zhenyuan Ancient Town. 📍 Take a walk along the Wuyang River, where the stilted buildings glow with warm yellow lights. The river breeze feels better than air conditioning.
⚠️ Xianghuo Rock has heavy rain this season, with powerful waterfalls but slippery paths. Wear non-slip shoes.
NO.8 Shizuishan | Ningxia
Most people head straight to Shapotou in Ningxia, but I insist that Shizuishan’s Sand Lake is the best desert wetland combo in July and August. 📌 Take a boat through the reed marshes to a sandy island in the middle of the lake where almost no one goes—you can have a desert all to yourself.
⏰ Go to the island after 3:30 PM to avoid the hottest time. Walking barefoot on the sand won’t burn your feet. Slide down the dunes while screaming all the way.
⚠️ Wear sunglasses and a hat; the UV rays here are stronger than you think.
🍜 The “Sand Lake Fish Restaurant” outside the park is good. Try the hand-shredded native chicken with cold sand scallions. The scallions are crispy and fragrant, something you won’t find elsewhere.
Which of these 8 places excites you the most? In summer, either go to a mountain valley with waterfalls or a desert island by a lake to feel the breeze. Don’t stay cooped up in air conditioning watching others’ social media. Get out and explore—even on a low budget, you can have a premium experience. Tell me in the comments which one you want to visit most, and I’ll write a detailed guide just for that.
