Shigatse Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Tashilhunpo Monastery Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
The Panchen Lama resides within, it's so magnificent!
The Tashilhunpo Monastery, along with the 'Three Great Monasteries' of Lhasa—Ganden, Sera, and Drepung—is known as one of the 'Four Great Monasteries' of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism and serves as the center of government for the Gelug sect. Its architecture is a fusion of traditional Tibetan styles and Buddhist elements, presenting the religious characteristics unreservedly to the world.
Built along the mountain terrain, Tashilhunpo Monastery is surrounded by winding palace walls. The majestic temple buildings, together with the palace walls, form the sacred source of the monastery. The entire complex faces south with Buddhist halls following the mountain's contour in an orderly and harmonious symmetrical layout, revealing a sense of harmony and symmetry inadvertently. The hall architecture of Tashilhunpo Monastery not only highlights religious and ethnic features but also emphasizes cultural heritage.
The Maitreya Temple is one of the grander structures within Tashilhunpo Monastery, famous for housing an almost 30-meter-tall Maitreya bronze Buddha. The temple is divided into five levels: the Lotus Throne Hall, the Chest Hall, the Face Hall, and the Crown Hall.
Location: Situated at the foot of Niseri Mountain, south of Shigatse city.
The Heart of Rear Tibet
Tashilhunpo Monastery | Comprehending Humanistic Beliefs.
Comprehending Humanistic Beliefs. Tashilhunpo Monastery is located at the foot of Nyiseri Mountain, south of Shigatse, which in Tibetan means 'Auspicious Sumeru Mountain'. It is the largest monastery in Shigatse and has been the residence of the Panchen Lamas from the 4th Panchen Lama onwards, hence it is known as the heart of Rear Tibet. Along with the three great monasteries of Lhasa, it is one of the four great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.
Before arriving in Shigatse, I had already visited the three great monasteries of Lhasa, so initially, Tashilhunpo Monastery did not make a deep impression on me. Compared to the previous three, it didn't strike me as much - until I entered the Coqen Hall.
I spent the entire afternoon in the Coqen Hall. The Great Assembly Hall, also known as Coqen Hall, is one of the earliest buildings associated with the monastery. This hall is very special compared to the three great monasteries of Lhasa, mainly consisting of a courtyard surrounded by cloisters, with many Buddha statues and murals painted around the cloisters.
In front of the Great Assembly Hall is a lecture field of over 600 square meters, where the Panchen Lama teaches and debates scriptures with the monks. Unfortunately, during my visit, the debate was not held. Pay attention to a very special place on the side of the square. Locals line up to press their ears against the wall. It is said that those with profound blessings can hear different sounds here.
At 12:30 and 4:30 in the afternoon, there are chanting sessions in the Great Assembly Hall. As the time approaches, monks will blow horns on the roof, then they will head to the hall, take off their shoes at a certain corner, and find their seats in the hall.
Dim lights, red pillars, monks draped in yellow robes, scriptures hanging from the beams... We queue outside the hall, listening to the sacred sounds of scriptures emanating from within, and a sense of sanctity naturally arises. Visitors can also queue with the locals and slowly enter the hall. Walking through the narrow corridors, the locals almost all bow their heads as they pass, as if the monks beside them are untouchable deities.
After touring the Great Assembly Hall, I sat alone on the stone steps of the square, listening to the scriptures from the hall, looking at the courtyard, and my heart seemed to become very peaceful all of a sudden...
Finally, when I was leaving, I met a young monk who was going to the Great Assembly Hall to deliver food and butter tea to the chanting monks. He smiled and handed me an apple, which made me feel very warm.
Notice
Opening hours: 09:00-19:30
Ticket price: Off-season 55
3 When visiting, enter from the left and exit from the right, in a clockwise direction
Pay attention to the opening hours of each hall, some are closed from 11:30 to 15:30. Around three in the afternoon, locals start entering the monastery, and at that time the Panchen Lama's Stupa Hall will be open
Right at the entrance of the monastery is the Tashilhunpo Monastery Restaurant, where you can dine after leaving the monastery

Everest Five-Day Tour | Five-Day Tour in Tibet | Travel in Tibet | Small Group in Tibet
Tibet | Shigatse is more interesting than imagined!!!
Shigatse is really a surprising city.
Not only is it an important border city, but it is also an important stronghold of Tibetan Buddhism Gelug Sect, with many ancient temples, and the entire city is unexpectedly new.
BUT for drivers, there are the strictest traffic rules in Tibet here, sisters who drive by themselves must remember to abide by the speed limit, otherwise a fine of ¥1200 + 6 points is inevitable.
In fact, there are several ancient sites and temples in the surrounding counties and cities of Shigatse.
However, we stayed in Shigatse city for two nights to prepare for the border defense certificate and supplies on the weekend.
The most unexpected places we got are 1 the Tashilhunpo Monastery in the city, and 2 the Manla Reservoir, which is very photogenic and beautiful.
Karola Glacier:
The most famous glacier near Shigatse.
At an altitude of 5,000 meters, it was once the filming location of the movie Red River Valley.
The advantage is a glacier that can be reached by car, but the ice surface is actually relatively small, mainly white glaciers and bald mountains, with not many highlights.
The peak season ticket is ¥ 50, and the off-season is free. It is said that if you do not stop and just drive by, you can actually not pay the ticket.
Manla Reservoir:
I didn't expect this unremarkable reservoir to be the most beautiful place we felt from Nyingchi to Shigatse.
The real Tiffany blue, and the winter water surface is half frozen and half flowing, which is very beautiful.
You can step on the blue ice on the lake, we played by the water for most of the day, and the aerial photography can capture the layered lake surface, which is very beautiful.
There is also a prayer flag mountain nearby where you can see the panoramic view, which is also very beautiful, and the filming effect is not lost to Riyue Mountain.
Tashilhunpo Monastery:
It is very convenient in Shigatse city, and there is a parking lot next to the temple.
The temple covers an area of 300,000 square meters. In addition to the three magnificent red temples / stupas, there are many pure white lama accommodation and study areas nearby, which feels like visiting an ancient town, very comfortable.
And there are much fewer tourists than the Potala Palace, and the experience is excellent.
However, the Tashi Temple still requires a ticket of ¥ 55 in winter (peak season 100).
Although the opening hours are written as 9:30-12:30 & 15:30-18:30.
But the big temple will close around 17:30 in the afternoon.
Remember to pay attention to the time.
Mount Everest Base Camp:
The Everest Base Camp will be dismantled in winter, and there is no overnight accommodation.
You can only take a close look at Everest and the monument.
Except for the shock of seeing the snow-capped mountains at the Gawula Pass, the base camp is actually a bit boring.
Tips:
There are very strict speed limits in Shigatse city and on the way to Everest.
Violations will really be fined and deducted points.
Remember to drive in combination with navigation prompts and speed limit signs.
Pay attention to the speed camera at any time.
Shigatse can apply for a border defense certificate without a criminal record certificate, and it can be done in five minutes with an ID card, which is very convenient.
The places for the certificate are divided into
1, Shigatse Government Service Center (working day).
2, Snowy Everest Women's Certificate Room (weekend).
Friends who are going to Ali or Everest, remember to pay attention to the time of the certificate.
If you need to purchase supplies, you can buy more in Shigatse. There are large supermarkets, clothing cities, and pharmacies here, especially thick clothes and outdoor supplies can be found.

Karuola Glacier Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Stunning Glacier in Tibet
On our drive through Tibet we stopped to see Karola Glacier. This glacier has a peak elevation of 5560 meters and had so much snow in early October. It is located in Shigatse in the Tibet Autonomous Region and is located close to Mount Naiqing Kangsang, which is one of the four tallest mountains in Tibet.
We passed here after spending our morning viewing the stunning Yamdrok Lake and then continued on our way towards the highlight of our trip…Everest Base Camp!
Admission price: 5 RMB (≈$0.80)

Today, let's talk about my little adventure in Tibet! 🌈 Just came back from the mysterious Karola Glacier, and I'm over the moon! Want to know how to have a fun and safe time? Come on, let me share it with you! 🚀
1️⃣️ On the first day, we set out from Lhasa and headed straight for the Everest Base Camp. The scenery along the way was breathtaking! Snow-capped mountains and blue skies, it was absolutely refreshing. 🚗
2️⃣️ On the second day, we made a special detour to the Karola Glacier on our way back, and the view was out of this world! Standing in front of the glacier, I felt so insignificant. ❄️
3️⃣️ On the third day, we returned to Lhasa to rest and prepare for our next trip. ☕️
4️⃣️ Regarding transportation, it's most convenient to hire a private car, although it's a bit pricey, it's totally worth it! You don't want to miss the scenery along the way! 🚙
5️⃣️ Don't forget that the plateau weather is unpredictable, so make sure to bring enough warm clothing and medicine. Also, be sure to respect the local culture and environment! ✨
Personal experience: This trip made me deeply appreciate the wonders of nature, every corner was full of surprises. 🌟

Warm Tips:
The average altitude in Ali is 4500 meters, so most people traveling to Ali will experience some altitude sickness, mainly manifested as headaches, vomiting, shortness of breath, chest tightness, bloating, loss of appetite, and poor sleep. Generally, a 2-3 day adaptation period in Lhasa is needed. Rest more, speak slowly to conserve energy, and take pain relievers like Bufalin or Acetaminophen to alleviate headaches.
The accommodation conditions in Ali are relatively poor compared to other regions of Tibet, especially below the county level, usually pastoral homestays and local guesthouses. Be prepared for a psychological gap.

Important Tips for Circumambulating Mount Kailash:
1. Although the average altitude of Mount Kailash is only about 3900 meters, to circumambulate it, you must conquer the Drolma La Pass at an altitude of 5630 meters. Therefore, those with severe altitude sickness should not attempt the circumambulation!
2. If you experience altitude sickness during the circumambulation, please stop immediately. Every year, some people become one with the sacred mountain due to altitude sickness!
3. Of course, altitude sickness is not insurmountable, but we urge everyone to act within their limits!
4. The best time to circumambulate Mount Kailash is from August to September each year. October is also possible, but it will be much colder. Climbing is not allowed after winter begins, as the mountain will be closed!
5. Moreover, in mid to late October each year, the ticket office and rescue vehicles of the Mount Kailash scenic area will withdraw from the area, and many supply points along the circumambulation route will also withdraw. So, do not be stubborn. If you encounter heavy snow and get lost during the circumambulation, especially near the Drolma La Pass, the chances of being rescued are very slim. We advise all tourists not to attempt the circumambulation during the mountain closure period!

And, if you're lucky, you might even witness the spectacular sight of the mountain bathed in the sunrise!

🏔️Come to Tibet, capture the stunning moments of Mount Everest with your camera, and leave behind unforgettable travel memories!
Shigatse Tourism.
When it comes to traveling to Tibet, many people choose Lhasa for their first visit, but they definitely won't miss Shigatse the second time. Shigatse is located between the middle section of the Himalayas and the middle section of the Gangdise-Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, with Mount Everest in its Dingri County. The capital, Samzhubze District, has been established for over 600 years. Samzhubze Dzong and Gyantse Dzong were once political and religious centers.
Mount Everest
For a detailed guide to Everest Base Camp, this one article is enough‼️||One must visit Tibet at least once in their lifetime, and having gone to Tibet, one must witness the golden sunrise on Mount Everest and the vast expanse of the starry sky at least once🌌
I have compiled a super detailed guide to Everest Base Camp, feel free to ask if there's anything you don't understand🌸
⭕️Border Pass
Navigate to the Shigatse Government Service Center, and you can get it processed at the service window on the first floor with your ID card, free of charge.
⭕️Tickets:
Depart from Shigatse and drive along the Shanghai-Nepal Highway for about 6⃣️ hours to the Everest ticket office, 🎫: 160 RMB per person.
Not long after entering the gate is the 108 turns; those who are prone to motion sickness should prepare motion sickness medicine in advance. Along the way, you will pass through the Gawula Pass, which is an excellent vantage point where you can see five 8,000-meter peaks simultaneously. They are Makalu, Lhotse, Everest, Cho Oyu, and Shishapangma🏔
After the 108 turns is the sightseeing bus transfer point, 🎫: 120 RMB per person.
It takes about 1⃣️ hour by sightseeing bus to reach the base camp. There will be checkpoints along the way, so remember to carry your ID card, border pass, and ticket
Photo Check-in📷:
There are four check-in points in total, one on the left climbing up the plank walkway, two horizontal mountain-shaped ones below the walkway, which are also the most popular photo check-in spots, and one in the camp square, but it is farther from Everest. On the right, near the river, there is a stone monument at an altitude of 5200 meters, which is also a good check-in spot.
☀️The highest altitude temple in the world: Rongbuk Monastery is also here.
🎫: 30 RMB per person
Viewing🗻:
The best time to watch the sunset is around eight to nine o'clock. Allow plenty of time, the wind on the mountain is very strong, so be sure to bring hats🕶️ gloves masks, and you can also bring a scarf if needed. There are two free rest points that supply hot water, and there are also self-heating hot pots, grilled sausages, and boiled corn for sale, but seating is limited.
Accommodation🏨:
The accommodation at the camp is in tents⛺️, with the disadvantage of high altitude and inconvenient water use. The advantage is that it is right at the foot of Everest, and on a clear night, you can see the starry sky, and in the morning, you can see the sunrise over Everest🌅
Those who do not wish to stay in tents can take the last bus at 9:30 pm back to Basong Village after watching the sunset. The altitude here is 4200 meters, which is less likely to cause altitude sickness. It is recommended to book in advance, as it can be hard to find a room if you arrive late.
May the sunshine over the Golden Mountain bring good fortune to all who witness it

The Road to Everest Excited but always keep calm
Visiting Everest Base Camp is a thrilling adventure, marked by long hours of driving through some of the most breathtaking landscapes. The journey itself offers spectacular views, highlighting the immense effort and challenges faced in constructing the roads through such rugged terrain.
Excitement builds as you approach the base camp, but it's crucial to remain calm due to the high altitude and low oxygen levels. Altitude sickness is a common concern, so it's important to take precautions. Staying well-hydrated, consuming snacks, and pacing yourself can help maintain your condition and make the experience more enjoyable. Remember to acclimatize properly and listen to your body to ensure a safe and memorable trip to this iconic destination.

Back from Tibet, and the rambling begins
Youth has no price tag, getting injections all the way to Lhasa, the impromptu Tibet trip of two sisters.
Day1-2: A routine of hotel and hospital.
Day3: Barkhor Street and its surrounding areas, indulging in various recommended eateries and fun places suggested by outsiders to outsiders.
Day4: Planned to visit Potala Palace and the Heaven Post Office, as well as Medicine King Mountain, but ended up being brainwashed by an auntie right after lunch into taking a limited one-day 'Tibetan beauty' photo shoot. Originally planned for the last day, by the time we finished choosing photos, all the attractions were closed, leaving us to casually enjoy the night view.
Day5-6: A two-day tour in Nyingchi, can't remember the names of all the places we visited, just know we stayed by the Yarlung Tsangpo River, with a view of Mount Namjagbarwa from the window, a sight not often seen by many, not sure if it counts as 'sunlit golden mountain'.
Day7: What a coincidence, it was November 1st, the start of winter travel in Tibet, with most attractions free of charge. Saved 200 yuan visiting Potala Palace, climbing up to the 13th floor was indeed tiring, but the guided tour was really interesting. The exit leads to the Heaven Post Office and the song 'A'Diao', just a pity that Medicine King Mountain was temporarily closed for renovation. Started visiting popular snack shops, ending up with a mouth ulcer.
Day8-11: A four-day tour to Mount Everest, had planned an additional five-day tour to Namtso, but it was closed due to snowfall during those days. Left some regrets, will visit again when the 'Gate of the Holy Elephant' is open. Along the 318, first visited Yamdrok Lake, a blue that can't be captured by a phone, followed by Karola and others, hung prayer flags, scattered Lungta, stayed in Shigatse, took the classic tourist photo at Everest, got my scalp wind-chapped while squatting for the 'sunlit golden mountain'. It's a pity that the base camp was canceled, where's the promised stargazing and wild disco? The 108 bends in the mountain road could confuse me, casually snapping photos at Qilin Gorge.
Day12: Back to Lhasa, indulging in hotpot and meat, leisurely strolling around
Day13: Leisurely lunch, then the ✈️ back to Shenzhen in the afternoon.
In summary, if you don't go to Tibet, you'll always long to go; when you're in Tibet and not feeling well, you can't wait to go home. So, before entering Tibet, you really need to plan well and rest well. If you ask me if I want to go again, at least not in the near future. If I do, it would be a self-driving trip to Ali!!!
