The island is only 1.25 square kilometers, with a 6 km road encircling it, and a population of only 300 people, yet boasts an impressive 100 cats. These cats are kept by fishermen to help control rats and remove fish bones. Most of the cats on the island are strays, but the islanders care for them well and feed them at regular intervals. Basic guidelines for visiting the cat island: · Do not carry the cats far from where you found them, or move them between indoor and outdoor areas. · Do not trespass on the personal property of the island's residents. · Do not litter on the island. If you bring trash, please take it with you. Activities on the island mostly involve searching for, playing with, and taking pictures of the cats scattered throughout the island. Bicycles can be rented at the building near the pier to explore the island. There are also restaurants on the island, mostly with a casual, homey atmosphere. They serve seafood and other dishes. The restaurant offers a variety of local dishes, including rice bowls with raw fish, udon, ramen, hamburgers, shaved ice, etc., all made with fresh seafood caught daily by the locals. This ensures the food is always delicious and fresh. If you arrive early and don't want to wait for the shops to open, you can bring your own food and enjoy it on the island. They have seating areas scattered throughout the island. I tried the sashimi on the island. It didn't look very appetizing, but it was surprisingly clean. The dark bits were from the sauce, which was delicious with a slightly sweet flavor, unlike the sauces we're used to when eating sashimi. Most importantly, it's very cheap; the dish I saw was only 800 yen. Some houses are also open as accommodations for tourists to stay overnight. Staying there would be a wonderful experience. How to get there: 1. From JR Hakata station, take the train to JR Fukko-Daimae station. 2. Take the bus from the bus stop in front of the station to Shingu Port. The fare is only 100 yen. 3. Buy your ferry ticket (one way) from the vending machine. It costs 480 yen, but don't worry, a kind old man will help you purchase the ticket. For first-time tourists who might be a little hesitant: ---> Take the ferry to Ainoshima. The return trip is the same as the outbound trip, but they don't let you buy a round-trip ticket at once. Our first stop in Kyushu was Fukuoka. We stayed in Fukuoka for 4 days. Besides shopping, my favorite experiences were visiting Cat Island—Ainoshima—and watching a sunset full of light and shadow in Itoshima. Fukuoka left me with an impression of a blend of bustling city life and tranquility. The Tenjin shopping district, Hakata Station area, and Canal City are places where you can shop until your legs give out. If you get tired of shopping, it’s worth stepping out of the city center to experience Fukuoka’s slow life. Ainoshima (p7-12) was visited solely for the cats. Apart from the cats, there’s nothing else on the island that holds your attention. The cats are very gentle and can be petted freely. Ainoshima showed me a world where humans and cats coexist happily. The cats don’t belong to any household; cat food and little shelters are found everywhere on the island. They are not pets of anyone—they are island residents. They don’t have to give up their freedom for handouts. Fukuoka Art Museum (p4-6) and Ohori Park offer a peaceful retreat within the city’s hustle and bustle. For us, coming from Vancouver, a city park like Ohori Park isn’t particularly attractive. Adjacent to it, the Fukuoka Art Museum houses artworks from premodern Japan to contemporary Japan. If you’re not in a hurry, you can slowly enjoy everything from ancient Japanese Buddhist statues and tea utensils to contemporary art, including works by Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, and artists related to Kyushu. Of course, if you’re not interested in art, you can simply check out Yayoi Kusama’s pumpkin. Itoshima (p1-4) I call it a photo paradise. Besides the white torii gate, there’s the nearby Palm Beach, swings on the beach, and concrete pipes painted in rainbow colors—all perfect props for photos. My brief stay in Fukuoka was not enough to understand even one percent of it. Journeys are always too hurried.

Ainoshima Island (Ainoshima Island), also known as Fukuoka's "Cat Island," is a simple island. Do you like cats? Do you like Japan? Haven't been to Fukuoka? These days, the perception of Fukuoka as a place close by for quick shopping and a quick return trip has become quite ingrained. This trip reminded me of Ainoshima, which I visited six years ago. It was a new challenge for me, someone who's always been chasing other people's tails. It's a nearby island, less than an hour from Hakata Station. Everyone seems to know how to take the 100 yen bus! I got off at Shingu Port and walked for about 15 minutes. I saw the scenery, tried a delicious bakery, and had a lot of experiences!!! Location: Aijima Itinerary: ➡️ From Hakata Station (JR Kagoshima Main Line 🚃) ➡️ Get off at Fuk Kong University Front Station (Exit North Exit) ➡️ Change to bus to the pier (Bus 1 only accepts cash 100 yen) ➡️ Get off at Aijima Ferry Terminal and take the boat Detailed information and timetables for buses and boats can be found in Google map. I headed there by boat at 11:30am so I made sure to schedule the bus and JR. And I was taking the boat back around 4:00 pm, I didn't have to be too nervous on the way back because there was a bus🚌 as soon as I got off the boat. I read online that you should not feed cats on the island😸, because the cats on the island are taken care of by the island residents.
