Skip the crowds this autumn! 4 affordable hidden gem cities with few crowds and fairy-tale scenery
Now that the cool breeze of early autumn has arrived, I don't want to squeeze into crowded, popular destinations.
I've discovered 4 budget-friendly hidden gem cities with few tourists, featuring mountains, water, and ancient villages. You can stay for 3–5 days without spending much, and the pace is so slow that you'll naturally find yourself slowing down 🥤
Gansu Longnan 🌿
Many people don't know that the Northwest hides such a lush, water-rich destination. After the start of autumn, the heat in the mountains disappears, and everything is vibrant green, with even the breeze carrying the scent of plants.
✨ Trip highlights
1. Guan'egou connects over a dozen azure alpine lakes. In early autumn, the treetops are just starting to turn yellow, and the water is as green as translucent jade. You don't need to squeeze for space at the viewing platforms; walking along the wooden boardwalks past the waterfalls, the cool mist on your face is super comfortable.
2. Wanxiang Cave is a natural karst cave formed over millions of years. The temperature inside is a constant 14°C year-round, so entering it feels like stepping into a natural air-conditioned room. The bizarre stalactites paired with soft lighting make it feel like walking through a fantasy realm.
3. Wenxian Tianchi is hidden deep in the mountains and hasn't been heavily developed. The lake surface is as flat as a polished mirror. Walking around the lake, you might occasionally run into local villagers herding cattle. There are no hawking shops, just the sounds of birds and the wind.
🗓️ Itinerary
D1: Arrive in Wudu District, Longnan, visit Wanxiang Cave in the afternoon, and stroll through the night market in the city in the evening.
D2: Take a bus to Dangchang County, spend the whole day visiting the main valley of Guan'egou, walk the Jinghai and Huzui Waterfall sections, and stay in Dangchang County.
D3: Visit E'man Valley and stop by the Tibetan villages at the foot of the mountain; if you have extra time, you can add 1 day to visit Wenxian Tianchi.
🍜 Food recommendations
Potato jiantuan, pork fat pancakes, gangzi noodles, and pickled vegetable noodles. All are just a few yuan a bowl, and the portions are so generous that one bowl is enough for a guy.
⚠️ Travel tips
The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is large, so bring a light jacket even if you go in early autumn. The trails in the valley are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. You can get a clean standard room in the county for just over CNY 100, no need to book too far in advance.
Guangdong Meizhou 🍵
The slow pace of this old Hakka city is truly ingrained in its bones. After the start of autumn, the mugginess of Guangdong fades away, and the city is filled with the scent of osmanthus and tea. The prices are surprisingly low.
✨ Trip highlights
1. The terraced tea fields of Yannanfei spread out along the mountain hollows. The autumn breeze carries the crisp scent of tea. When you're tired of walking, sit down at a tea table and have a cup of local Dancong tea. You can also see classic Hakka walled houses, perfect for total relaxation.
2. Songkou Ancient Town is a Hakka hometown with a thousand-year history. The riverside arcade streets retain their old-fashioned look. There are no crowded influencer shops; the streets are filled with local elderly people playing chess and sunning themselves. Sit at the Huochuan Wharf for a while and watch the Meijiang River flow slowly by.
3. The outskirts are scattered with many original, eco-friendly Weilong houses that you can visit for free. After the start of autumn, locals are busy drying golden pomelos and dried vegetables. The courtyards are piled high with yellow produce, full of local life.
🗓️ Itinerary
D1: Arrive in Meizhou city, visit the old town arcade streets, eat snacks along the way, and watch the Meijiang River night view in the evening.
D2: Spend the whole day visiting Songkou Ancient Town, eat Hakka food in the town at noon, and visit the surrounding Weilong house villages in the afternoon.
D3: Take a slow stroll through Yannanfei Tea Fields. If you like hiking, you can add a trip to Yinna Mountain to see the sea of clouds.
🍜 Food recommendations
Hakka pickled noodles with Sanjiedi soup, salt-baked chicken, preserved vegetable pork belly, and fairy grass jelly. A bowl of pickled noodles plus soup is just over CNY 10. Salt-baked chicken is sold by weight and is half the price of the Pearl River Delta.
⚠️ Travel tips
The UV rays are still strong during the day, so remember to wear a sun hat and sun-protective clothing. There are many stone slab roads in the ancient town, so soft-soled shoes are more comfortable. You can go to the old town market to buy local specialties; it's much more cost-effective than the scenic spots.
Anhui Chizhou 🛕
The most low-key, Zen-like small city in southern Anhui. Many people rush straight to Mount Jiuhua and miss it. The city leans against mountains and water, the pace of life is ridiculously slow, and consumption is very low.
✨ Trip highlights
1. Pingtian Lake is 1.5 times the size of West Lake in Hangzhou and is open for free. After the start of autumn, the late lotus flowers by the lake haven't faded yet, and the scent of osmanthus has started to drift. Ride a bike along the lake, and in the evening, watch the sunset dye the lake surface golden red. You won't run into many tourists the whole time.
2. The water in Guniujiang is so clear you can see the gravel at the bottom. In early autumn, the mountain forests slowly turn yellow and red. The Yan Family Ancient Village at the foot of the mountain still retains original Hui-style architecture without excessive commercialization. Villagers set up stalls at their doors to sell their own dried bamboo shoots.
3. Xinghua Village, mentioned in Du Mu's poems, is right on the edge of the city. When the autumn osmanthus blooms, the whole village is fragrant. No need to rush to attractions; just stroll along the small paths for half a day. If you like peace and quiet, you can also visit the ancient temples at the foot of Mount Jiuhua, where the sound of pine waves and incense smoke is very calming.
🗓️ Itinerary
D1: Arrive in Chizhou city, rent a bike for a slow ride along Pingtian Lake, wait for the sunset by the lake, and stay in the city in the evening to eat snacks.
D2: Go to Shitai Guniujiang, visit Longmen Pool and Yan Family Ancient Village, splash in the water and see the mountains, and return to the city the same day.
D3: If you like culture, visit Xinghua Village. If you want to pay respects to Buddha, go to Mount Jiuhua. No need to rush, just take it slow.
🍜 Food recommendations
Chizhou small buns, Guichi small wontons, Shitai Yipin pot, and Qiupu River small fish. Breakfast costs just a few yuan to fill you up, and you can eat very well with farm-style dishes for about CNY 30 per person.
⚠️ Travel tips
Pingtian Lake is very large, so walking the whole thing is not recommended; renting a bike is the most convenient. The water in the mountains is cold after the start of autumn, so don't splash in the water for too long. You can buy incense for Mount Jiuhua at the foot of the mountain; the price is more affordable than on the mountain.
Shaanxi Hanzhong 🍂
A hidden gem old city overshadowed by Xi'an. It's a true "Little Jiangnan of the Northwest." After the start of autumn, the sky is high and the clouds are light. Whether you are visiting mountains or ancient towns, it's comfortable, and the snacks are so cheap they are counted by the piece.
✨ Trip highlights
1. Autumn arrives early in Liping National Forest Park. By early September, the mountain forests start to change color. Streams and waterfalls are strung through the colorful forests, and there are unique alpine stone forest landscapes. You won't run into many tourists the whole time, and there's no need to queue for photo spots.
2. Qingmuchuan Ancient Town is hidden at the junction of Shaanxi, Gansu, and Sichuan provinces. The Ming and Qing dynasty old buildings are perfectly preserved. There are no noisy bar streets. At night, red lanterns are hung along the streets. Strolling along the bluestone roads feels like traveling back to an old trading town.
3. The Guhantai in the city was the Hanzhong Prince's Mansion of Liu Bang. It is now the Hanzhong City Museum, which is open for free. You can see the cliff carvings unearthed from the Shimen Plank Road. History lovers can spend half a day here. The autumn mountain scenery around Shimen Plank Road is also very spectacular.
🗓️ Itinerary
D1: Arrive in Hanzhong city, visit Guhantai, and go to the Qianjin Road night market in the evening to eat all the local snacks.
D2: Spend the whole day visiting Liping National Forest Park, see the colorful forests and waterfalls, and stay in the city or near the scenic area.
D3: If you have time, go to Qingmuchuan Ancient Town to visit the old streets and the Wei Family Residence. If you are short on time, just visit Shimen Plank Road and then you can head back.
🍜 Food recommendations
Hot rice noodles with vegetable tofu, walnut buns, jar tea, and Ningqiang spicy chicken. A breakfast set costs CNY 7–8. Walnut buns are CNY 1 each, so delicious that you'll want to take a bag with you when you leave.
⚠️ Travel tips
The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is large, so bring a thick jacket if you go to Liping or Qingmuchuan. There are many homestays in the ancient town; you can book when you arrive, and you can even negotiate the price with the owner. The attractions in the city are close to each other, so you can get around by riding a shared electric scooter.
Actually, you don't have to join the hustle and bustle of influencer cities when you go out. Finding a small city where no one is rushing you, eating a few authentic local meals, feeling the breeze of autumn, and spending a few days relaxing is what a vacation should really be like 🍂
