Shixing Mantangwei (Part 2) We first entered the central Wei, where a plaque reading "Mantang Hakka Great Wei" hangs above the door, inscribed by former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Ye Xuanping. The central Wei covers an area of 5,619 square meters. The main building in the middle is nearly 17 meters tall. As the earliest built structure, the door bears the two large characters "Foundation Stone." Inside is a square-shaped corridor paved with small cobblestones, surrounding a five-story main building—the ancestral hall (see images 1–8 above). This was the clan's meeting place. The top floor served as the official school—Prince Tower. Under the beams rests a "Wei Dan" descendant beam, larger and thicker than other beams, shaped like a slightly curved carrying pole with smaller ends and a larger middle. At the center of the beam is a "Qiankun Bag" containing items symbolizing gold, silver, wealth, and grains. On both sides are carved the four characters "Prosperity for Ten Thousand Generations" (see images 9–12). However, the bedroom of the owner, Guan Qianrong, was only 10 square meters. It is said that "a large house with few people is an ominous house," and smaller rooms better "store wind and gather energy." To the right of the central Wei is Shangxin Wei, covering 4,387 square meters. Its layout includes one main gate and one main hall. Looking inward, seven thresholds connect seamlessly. To its left is the Gongming Courtyard, which contains 10 units arranged as six upstairs and four downstairs, with three to four rows of houses and corridors horizontally. Each row houses two families, each with four rooms (see images 13–15). Those awarded a unit in the Gongming Courtyard could pass the room usage rights to their descendants. To encourage descendants to study and achieve success, the official family stipulated that those qualified to live in the Prince Tower could receive tutoring from a scholar. To the left of the central Wei is Xiaxin Wei, covering 3,117.6 square meters, divided into inner and outer parts. Mantangwei is the largest and best-preserved Wei house in Guangdong. In 1996, it was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit and was upgraded to a 4A-level scenic spot in 2020. Since we spent a whole day traveling to Shixing, the original plan to visit Danxia Mountain's Jinshiyan had to be canceled. However, having enjoyed the night view of Wujiang last time in Shaoguan, this time the night view of Beijiang also left a deep impression on us (see images 18–20). (To be continued, stay tuned)
