As soon as you head underground at the station, you’re greeted by walls covered in fish murals—it feels like walking through an aquarium 🐟 It’s a total hidden gem for photos! ・Retro vibes and old-school arcades The local, unpretentious feel is unbeatable. From retro arcades to cute souvenir shops selling Lake Balaton-themed goods, there’s so much to discover! ・The ultimate lakeside chill Whether it’s swimming, fishing, or just lounging on the grass, everyone here enjoys the lake at their own pace. It’s the perfect atmosphere for anyone needing a mental reset 🍃 ・Stress-free shopping The town center is very convenient, with large parks, shopping malls, and cafes. There are plenty of shops selling swimwear and original merch, so you can easily pick up anything you forgot on the spot (lol)! The town is compact enough to explore entirely on foot. While the vibrant summer energy is fantastic, I’d love to come back during the quiet winter months to experience the lake’s serene side ☺️ It’s an easy day trip from Budapest, making it the perfect getaway for when you want to escape the city and slow down! 🚌 Getting there from Budapest Direct trains (IC, Ex, IR, etc.) from Budapest take about 1 to 1.5 hours! 🎟️ Tickets & Travel Tips ・Buy tickets at station counters, vending machines, or via the official "MÁV Plusz" app/website. ・If you have a "Hungary Pass," you typically only need to pay for a seat reservation on IC trains. A peaceful getaway to soothe your soul] ~ A must-see for those who love fairytale-like streets, a world away from the big city ~ I took a direct train from Budapest to explore the center of Siófok ✨✨ The moment I stepped out of the station, the town's charming atmosphere completely won me over! My personal favorite was the abundance of greenery and flowers scattered throughout the town, paired with the soft, cream-colored buildings. Time seems to move more slowly here, and it was so lovely that I couldn't help but think, "I wish I could live in a town like this..." 🥺 One interesting thing is how the town is split by Siófok Station: on one side, you have the charming townscape, and on the other, the vast Lake Balaton stretches out like a sea! Standing tall in the central square is the town's symbol, the "Siófok Water Tower." Since there are no high-rise buildings nearby, the view from the tower is incredible! The square is filled with benches and flower beds where you can relax, and the cute yellow church right next to it is very photogenic ⛪️ I also had a surprise while wandering into a local supermarket! Even though it was a standard local shop and not an Asian grocery store, they actually sold soy sauce, ponzu, and even cup yakisoba 😂 Finding ponzu in a regular supermarket abroad made me feel a sudden sense of connection! There’s also a retro red phone booth (I peeked inside and laughed because there was no actual phone! lol) and a post office with a very stylish exterior. Sending a letter from here would be a wonderful way to remember your trip 📮 With a shopping mall right in front of the square, you won't have any trouble finding a place to cool down or take a break. For those who want to experience a peaceful and lovely vibe that's a bit different from the urban streets of Budapest, I can't recommend this town enough! 📍 Area: Siófok (City Center) 🚃 Access: About 1 hour to 1 hour 40 minutes from Budapest (Budapest-Déli Station, etc.) by direct IC, Ex, or IR trains. [Siófok / Lake Balaton] ~A must-visit for anyone looking for ultimate relaxation~ I wanted to get away from the city and enjoy a resort feel on a day trip from Budapest, so I hopped on a train and headed here! ✨✨ Lake Balaton is Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake, and its sheer scale has earned it the nickname "The Hungarian Sea." To give you an idea of its size, it’s about as big as Lake Biwa in Japan! It took about 1 to 1.5 hours from Budapest via direct train (IC or IR), making Siófok one of the most accessible and convenient spots in the Lake Balaton area. 🚃 When I arrived, the sense of openness was incredible—it felt just like the ocean! The most surprising part was how shallow the water is. I walked out about 50 meters and it was still only at knee level! 🤣 It's a perfect, safe spot for families with little ones. ☺️ The way the water colors shifted into a beautiful gradient as it got deeper was absolutely stunning. While I was lounging by the lake, a small plane suddenly buzzed by towing a banner advertisement 😂 (it was an ad for computers, lol). You don't see that retro style of advertising much these days—it definitely made me smile! There are plenty of spots to rest with benches and overhead covers, making it a great place to spend a lazy day (just a heads-up: there were quite a few bugs in the shaded areas!). I really wanted to eat with a view of the water, so I grabbed some bread from a nearby supermarket and had lunch on a bench just a meter away from the lake. 🥐 Even though it was a hot day, eating in that peaceful, breezy atmosphere felt like such a luxury. ✨ I’ve heard the sunset views are breathtaking, so I definitely want to come back for that next time. (Sunset in Hungary is quite late in the summer—around 9:00 PM—so I'm planning a "sunset rematch" for autumn! 🍂) I highly recommend this lovely spot to anyone looking for a quick resort getaway from the city! ✨ 🏠 Spot: Siófok / Lake Balaton 📍 Access: 1 to 1.5 hours from Budapest-Déli or Budapest-Kelenföld station via direct train (IC, Ex, IR, etc.) to Siófok station. On the way from southern Hungary to Slovenia, we came across the Siófoki Evangélikus Lelkészi Hivatal Church, which has a face resembling an owl. This wooden church has a unique shape that looks different from every angle. It is usually closed to the public, but we were lucky to see someone coming out as we passed by, allowing us to catch a glimpse of its mysterious interior. Nearby, we also passed the giant plane tree Az Év fája 2010 and an eye-catching community center building that looks like it came from the Middle Ages.

Siófok is the capital of Lake Balaton and not only because it is the largest city, but also with its beautiful long promenade. Surprisingly nice modern hotels are lined up along the promenade. I wanted to take a picture of the sunrise, so I went out to the lakeside at dawn. Apart from me, I only met a cleaning brigade, who left quickly. When the sun's rays appeared in the sky, many mosquitoes appeared. I was prepared I used the insect repellent. It helped a bit but then after 10 minutes I decided to leave. The mosquito cloud won and I lost and ran away. You can go around Lake Balaton by train, by bus but there's a bike route too. I walked that day 25 km including the Toreki swamp trail.
