Riding a gondola in Venice is a once in a lifetime romantic experience, that's why so many visitors have it high up in their bucket list! During my visit I collected useful Infos on prices and tips to share with anyone planning on visiting Venice and interested in riding a gondola. Standard official daytime gondola rates in Venice are €90 for a 30 minute private ride, while nighttime (from 7pm) tours cost €110 for 35 minutes. Official pricing is per boat (holding up to 5–6 passengers) rather than per individual! If you want to extend the time of your ride, prices are: €40 for an extra 20 minutes during the day and €50 at night. It's possible to share a ride for prices around €35 to €40 per person, this option needs to be booked via tour providers. ✨Practical Tips!!✨ · Confirm the price and duration first! Always agree on the route, length, and exact cost with the gondolier before stepping onto the boat. · Singing is extra! Standard rides do not include live singing or musical instruments unless explicitly negotiated and paid for beforehand. · Avoid main-stamped hubs for quiet routes! Boarding away from San Marco or the Rialto Bridge and choosing smaller neighborhood canals, offers a quieter, more romantic atmosphere. · Ride away from Canal Grande! You can take a public ferry ride for 10€ to ride the whole length of the main Venice canal, take advantage of that and use your gondola ride to explore more hidden, private and romantic smaller canals instead! · Budget alternative!!!! Stepping off the lagoon boat onto Burano feels like walking straight into an artist's vibrant palette. Located in the northern Venetian Lagoon, this breathtaking little island is famous the world over for its intensely bright, rainbow-colored fishermen's houses and its centuries-old tradition of delicate lace-making. Strolling along the quiet canals where colorful reflections shimmer on the water, with laundry gently swaying between houses and the sweet scent of local sweets in the air, was an utterly joyful and mesmerizing experience. 🛶✨ . 📅 What I experienced · Exploring the Rainbow Canals: Wandering endlessly through the charming streets and across small bridges, marveling at how every single house is painted in a distinct, striking hue according to strict local guidelines. · The Lace-Making Tradition (Merletto di Burano): Visiting local artisan shops and museums to watch master craftswomen skillfully thread delicate needles to create world-famous Venetian lace. · The Leaning Campanile: Catching sight of the wonderfully crooked bell tower of the Church of San Martino, which leans dramatically over the island skyline. . 🏨 Where I stayed · I stayed in a cozy, brightly colored guesthouse right along one of the quiet canals. Waking up early before the day-trippers arrived from Venice and enjoying a coffee while watching the morning light hit the pastel facades was absolute serenity. 🛏️☕ . 🍴 My culinary highlights · Venetian lagoon cuisine is rich in maritime flavor. I indulged in a traditional plate of *risotto di gò* (made with local lagoon fish), followed by a generous helping of *Bursosti*, the traditional buttery butter-cookie biscuits invented right on the island. 🍪🍷 . 📌 New tips for visiting · Take the Vaporetto from Venice: Burano is easily reached by taking the public water bus from the Fondamenta Nove station in Venice, making it a wonderful and scenic island-hopping day trip. · Stay Overnight or Visit Early: Most tourists flood the island during the peak midday hours. Arriving early in the morning or staying after the last ferry leaves lets you experience Burano in absolute peace. · Respect Local Life: The island is small and lived-in. Without a doubt, this is one of those cities that looks straight out of a movie... but before you visit, there are a few things you should know. 👀 🚤 Transportation: gondolas coming and going... Yes, they are a staple of the Venetian experience, but they aren't exactly cheap. A ride can set you back around €90–€110, with some options even including onboard musicians. 🎻 💶 Want the experience without breaking the bank? There’s a highly recommended alternative: the traghetti, which let you cross the Grand Canal for just about €2. It’s not a long sightseeing tour, but it gives you a taste of gliding through the canal for next to nothing. 🗺️ Google Maps vs. Venice: a tough battle. The streets are an absolute maze. You can follow the map to a tee and still end up at a dead end… or realize that the supposedly most direct route involves crossing multiple bridges. 😂 My advice: just go with the flow and enjoy the stroll. ✨ And yes, the city is absolutely stunning. Especially when you step into Piazza San Marco. Pictures simply don't do some places justice, and this square is definitely one of them. That said, I had a little hiccup when I arrived: my train from Verona was delayed, so I got there pretty late and ended up missing out on the Doge's Palace. Just a great excuse to come back! 😉 Another slight bummer: San Marcuola, one of the churches I really wanted to visit, was under restoration. Oh well, next time. Venice is just getting started... I'll share more details and some tips on how to enjoy it without spending a fortune later. Day two in Italy, unlocked.
