I went to Nagano this February expecting temples, mountains and maybe a quick stop before moving on. Instead, I found a city that feels like a crossroads between several different versions of Japan Start with Zenkoji, a temple with around 1,400 years of history, right in the city. Then, less than an hour away, you can be walking through the ancient cedar forests of Togakushi, where some of the trees are around 400 years old 🌲 And then there is the food. Nagano is famous for Togakushi soba, but I also discovered oyaki, a local stuffed dumpling that became one of those foods I kept thinking about after leaving 🥢 The city is also the gateway to some seriously different experiences. You can visit Jigokudani and see the famous snow monkeys bathing in hot springs, explore the former Olympic venues, or head to Obuse for chestnut sweets and Hokusai's art. What makes Nagano special to me is that none of these experiences feel disconnected. In one trip, you can go from a 1,400-year-old temple to a mountain pilgrimage route, eat handmade soba and then watch monkeys relaxing in a hot spring 🐒 And the best part? From Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen can get you to Nagano in about 80 minutes, so it is surprisingly easy to add to a Japan itinerary 🚄 If you had just two days in Nagano, which would you choose first: Zenkoji, Togakushi, the snow monkeys, or a food adventure?

📍① Nezame no Toko (Agematsu, Kiso District) This stunning granite canyon was carved out over millennia by the Kiso River's rapids. The contrast between the crystal-clear emerald waters and the stark white rock formations is breathtaking. Highlights: The "Urashima-do" pavilion, standing solitary amidst the rocks. Legend has it that this mystical spot is where Urashima Taro settled after returning from the Dragon Palace. Note: You'll be scrambling over massive boulders, so sturdy sneakers are an absolute must! 👟 📍② Tateishi Park (Suwa City) Perched at 934m, this panoramic viewpoint offers a sweeping gaze over Lake Suwa and the surrounding Alps. It's famous as the setting model for Makoto Shinkai’s film "Your Name," making it a popular pilgrimage site. Recommended Time: From 30 minutes before sunset through the magic hour. The sky and lake fade from a warm crimson to deep indigo as the city lights flicker on—a truly breathtaking sight. 🌅 Point: The tiered grassy areas are the perfect spot to sit back and soak in the evening glow. We recommend exploring Nezame no Toko during the day and heading to Tateishi Park to catch the twilight views. Save this to your Nagano travel plans! 📌 Pilgrimage Site

Togakushi Shrine isn't merely a single shrine; it’s a remarkable complex of "Five Shrines" consisting of Hokosha, Hinomikosha, Chusha, Kuzuryusha, and Okusha. The most iconic sight is the awe-inspiring approach to Okusha, lined with massive cedar trees. While winter offers a breathtaking, sacred atmosphere blanketed in snow, summer at Togakushi paints an entirely different, incredibly lush picture. As sunlight filters through the canopy of the towering cedars, the entire pathway is swallowed by deep, vibrant greenery. The moment you step into the forest, you'll feel the air temperature drop by a few refreshing degrees. 🚌 How to Get There: Head to Bus Stop No. 7 at Nagano Station and catch the ALPICO Kotsu bus bound for Togakushi. There are currently two main bus options to Togakushi: 1️⃣ Bus No. 70 "Regular Route Bus": No reservations required. 2️⃣ "Sightseeing Express Togakushi Line": An express tourist bus that operates on a reservation basis, allowing you to secure a seat in advance. Both buses will be running from spring through autumn in 2026. Both buses depart from Nagano Station's Bus Stop No. 7. 《Pro Tip for First-Timers: You don’t have to tackle all five shrines in one go, just figure out what you want to see most and start there!》 If you want to go to Togakushi Shrine Hokosha, get off at "Togakushi Hokosha"; if you want to visit Togakushi Shrine Chusha, alight at "Togakushi Chusha"; if your main goals are Togakushi Shrine Okusha and Kuzuryusha, get off at "Togakushi Okusha Iriguchi"; and if you're specifically chasing that picture-perfect avenue of giant cedars, Okusha is exactly where you want to be. It takes roughly an hour by regular route bus from Nagano Station to Togakushi, so it's safer to factor that into your schedule. Unlike city buses, these don't run every few minutes, and the schedule isn't very dense. Especially when you're done exploring Okusha or Chusha and getting ready to head back to Nagano Station, it's highly recommended to check the return bus schedule right after getting off. For instance, the "Togakushi Chusha" bus stop sign in the picture is one of the boarding points for heading back to Nagano Station. Also, looking at the 2026 timetable, the regular No. 70 bus and the reservation-only Sightseeing Express are listed separately, so don't just hop onto any bus that says "Bound for Nagano Station"—remember to double-check whether you're taking a regular bus or the reservation-only express. ⭐️ Recommended Itinerary ⭐️ If you only have half a day, you can focus your trip on Chusha + Okusha; if you have a full day and your leg strength is up for it, then consider the complete five-shrine pilgrimage. The area around Chusha is exactly where Togakushi Soba restaurants are clustered. It's the perfect spot to pause during your shrine visit and slurp down a bowl of handmade soba before moving on to the next stop. Those cozy little eateries surrounded by the forest in the photo perfectly capture the authentic flavor of Togakushi. A quick heads-up: bus routes change during the winter season, so be sure to refer to the specific winter and summer timetables: Togakushi Shrine Transportation Quick Guide✍🏻 Starting Point: JR Nagano Station Boarding Point: Nagano Station Bus Stop No. 7 Bus Routes: No. 70 "Togakushi Line via Loop Bridge" / Sightseeing Express Togakushi Line Chusha: Get off at Togakushi Chusha Station Okusha: Get off at Togakushi Okusha Iriguchi Station Travel Time: Approx. 1 hour, reserving plenty of buffer time is recommended

⛩️ Suwa Taisha Kamisha Honmiya | Nagano Since I was in Nagano, I finally visited Suwa Taisha Kamisha Honmiya, a place I’ve been dying to see.🌿 Suwa Taisha is the head shrine of all Suwa Shrines across Japan. It's actually quite unique, made up of four separate shrine complexes: Kamisha Honmiya, Kamisha Maemiya, Shimosha Akimiya, and Shimosha Harumiya. At Kamisha Honmiya, the principal deity enshrined is Takeminakata-no-kami. Its history is incredibly ancient, believed to date all the way back to the "Kuniyuzuri" myth in the Kojiki. The shrine grounds are surrounded by towering trees, giving off a vibe where even the air feels different just by walking around.🌳 _____________________ And when you think of Suwa Taisha, what immediately comes to mind is the famous "Onbashira" (sacred pillars). Four massive fir trees stand at the corners of the shrine grounds, and they are replaced with new ones during the "Onbashira Festival," held every seven years in the years of the Tiger and Monkey. It’s an absolutely thrilling festival where enormous trees, logged from the Yatsugatake Mountains, are dragged entirely by human power...!😳 _____________________ But on this trip, what I found just as enjoyable as the shrine itself was... The row of souvenir shops right near Honmiya!🏮✨ With a lineup of traditional storefronts, simply strolling down the street feels like stepping into a retro tourist town. You’ll find classic Shinshu souvenirs, of course, along with Gohei mochi, soba noodles, and soft-serve ice cream, perfect for a post-shrine visit snack stroll.🍦 They also carry traditional ceramics, folk crafts, and cute sundries, and personally, I had so much fun just browsing this street...! It would be a total waste to just see the shrine and head home, so if you make it to Honmiya, definitely take a walk around the nearby shops.◎ _____________________ If you have extra time, I highly recommend touring all four shrines of Suwa Taisha, not just Honmiya. The vibe is distinct between the Kamisha (Honmiya and Maemiya), and Shimosha (Akimiya and Harumiya), so dedicating a full day to exploring them all sounds like an amazing time.🚗 🚃 Access from the Tokyo Area About 2 hours and 35 minutes from Shinjuku Station via the Chuo Line Limited Express "Azusa." The Suwa area is served by Shimosuwa, Kamisuwa, and Chino Stations; hop off according to your destination. Stretching your legs a bit from Tokyo to spend a holiday enjoying Suwa Taisha and taking a classic Shinshu stroll along the shrine approach is highly recommended.🌿 Kamisha Honmiya

If you have watched "Your Name," you must be impressed by Lake Itomori, where Mitsuha's home is located. This lake is based on a real lake, Lake Suwa in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture. The lake is very large, and the villages and towns around the lake are surrounded by cities. Looking down from above, it does have the feeling of the lake in "Your Name." The best viewing point to see all this is Tateishi Park on the mountain next to the lake. Standing on the platform of Tateishi Park, you will have a very wide view. The park also has a semicircular stepped platform. Sitting on the mountain and looking at the beautiful scenery of the lake and the traffic below is a very good place to rest and relax. If you are lucky in winter, you can also see the snow-capped mountains in the distance. At the foot of the mountain where Tateishi Park is located, there is also a historic Te-naga Shrine, which is very quiet between residential areas and schools. You can go in and have a look when you go up and down the mountain. In addition, not far from the shrine, there is the prototype of the substation that was blown up in "Your Name." If you are a fan of the movie, don't miss it. Transportation: There is no bus to Tateishi Park. You can only choose to walk, ride a bike, or take a taxi. It takes about 40 minutes (one way) to walk from Kamisuwa Station to Tateishi Park. It will be relatively faster to go downhill, but there are many forks in the middle, so you need to take out your phone to confirm the direction frequently. Riding a bike can save you half the time of walking, but it will be a little difficult to go uphill. You can rent a bike at the rental center next to the station.

Suwa Lake is one of the filming locations for 'Your Name'. The main attraction is to take a lap around the lake. The best spot to view Suwa Lake is at Tateishi Park. This park is famous for its stunning lake views and the changing natural scenery throughout the seasons. The park offers a wide field of vision, allowing you to enjoy different beautiful landscapes both day and night. After getting off at Kami-Suwa Station, you can drive or take a taxi to Tateishi Park. You can also take a bus up the mountain, but the bus schedule is infrequent, so be sure to check the times. If you plan to visit the Suwa Lake area, this park is definitely worth including in your itinerary. #GlobalTravel
