Stunning Semeru (Mount)
This was my second mountain after Gunung Kinabalu. We went here in November 2014. I was told it is the highest mountain on Pulau Jawa. Standing majestically at 3676 metre, Semeru or also known as Gunung Mahameru is still an active volcano in Indonesia. Recently it erupted in December and sacrificed around 57 lives.
Anyway, me and my friends enjoyed our hike to the summit. It was a challenging trail yet beautiful view towards the summit. However, I am also annoyed with the amount of gravels that got into the hiking boots. Some of my stops involved getting rid of the small stones from my boot.
As you climb, you can also see smokes and smell the sulphur so make sure to wear mask to avoid inconvenience. take as much pictures because the view is worth the climb for hours

SEMERU MOUNTAIN
Mount Semeru or Mount Meru is a conical volcano in East Java, Indonesia. Mount Semeru is the highest mountain on the island of Java, with its peak Mahameru, 3,676 meters above sea level (masl). This mountain was formed due to the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate under the Eurasian Plate. Mount Semeru is also the third highest volcano in Indonesia after Mount Kerinci in Sumatra and Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara. The crater at the top of Mount Semeru is known as Jonggring Saloko. Mount Semeru is administratively included in the area of two regencies, namely Malang Regency and Lumajang Regency, East Java Province. This mountain is included in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area.
Semeru has Dipterocarp Hill forest area, Upper Dipterocarp forest, Montane forest, and Ericaceous Forest or mountain forest. Semeru's geographical position is between 8°06' latitude and 112°55' east longitude.
In 1913 and 1946 Jonggring Saloka Crater had a dome with a height of 3,744.8 m until the end of November 1973. To the south, this dome smashed into the crater rim causing lava flows to the south side covering the Pronojiwo and Candipuro areas in Lumajang.
This mountain is included in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area. This National Park consists of mountains and valleys covering an area of 50,273.3 hectares. There are several mountains in the Mt. Tengger Caldera, including; Mt. Bromo (2.392m) Mt. Batok (2,470m) Mt.Kursi (2,581m) Mt.Watangan (2,662m) Mt.Widodaren (2,650m). There are four lakes (ranu): Ranu Pani, Ranu Regulo, Ranu Kumbolo and Ranu Darungan.
There are various types of flora in the Mount Semeru area, but many are dominated by spruce, acacia, pine, and Jamuju species. Meanwhile, the undergrowth is dominated by kirinyuh, reeds, tembelekan, harendong and white edelwiss. Edelwiss is also commonly found on the slopes leading to the summit of Semeru. There are also several types of endemic orchids that live around Mount Semeru in the south.
Many fauna that inhabit Mount Semeru include: panther, budeng, mongoose, deer, deer, etc. While in Ranu Kumbolo there are grouses that still live wild.

Blessed with gorgeous panoramic landscape, East Java is home of spectacular volcanic peaks, with some of the best view points in Indonesia. There are four volcanic peaks higher than 3,000 m in the region. This volcanic activity has created a largely fertile area and flourishing agriculture in the area. Semeru, the highest volcano on Java, and one of its most active, lies at the southern end of a volcanic massif extending north to the Tengger caldera. The steep-sided volcano, also referred to as Mahameru (Great Mountain), rises abruptly to 3676 m above coastal plains to the south.
The summit push for Mt.Semeru needs to start by midnight. The reason for the early start is that Semeru, being an active volcano, has daily sulphurous gas cloud puffs by 10 am that are poisonous. It could be dangerous if one gets too close or the wind direction changes such that the gas cloud goes over the hiking trail. So by 9 am whether you have reached the peak or not, it is mandatory to go down to a lower level of the volcano to be at a safe distance to the gas clouds.
It is very important to bring a competent guide and porters when hiking volcano Semeru. They help to make sure you are on the right path, provide situational awareness and point out areas of danger. From Kalimati you will pass fields of Edelweiss the eternal flower, tight rough jungle and a section called the Last Vegetation. If you are a very fit, the total trekking duration is about three days, with complete porters and guide so you only need to carry your day pack.
